Kevin Garnett averaged 20+, 10+ and 5+ for several consecutive years. Most recently in the 04-05 season.

He reminds me of Magic Johnson with more athletic ability and less court vision, polish and flash.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant in college.

Can/will Simmons be a plus defensive player in the NBA?

Too early to tell if he will be. He "can" be though.
You certainly can't rule out "yes" at this stage, although some no doubt will.

I don't think he'll be a negative there, but I don't think he has the length/size to be a big needle mover, because I think ultimately, he's a 4.

Re: Ben Simmons
He doesn't have the physical measurements to be a big impact defender, but I think he'll easily develop into an adequate NBA defender, and I think he'll prove to be pretty versatile in terms of guarding all types of PF's in this league, and even most SF's.

As a PF he is bad now, but depends a ton on the match up as well

I think he will be, maybe by his second year. He doesn't have outstanding physical attributes to be a great defender, but they're adequate. His mental make-up, however, may make him a great team defender and spot/situational defender, like a Larry Bird.

Yeah, the times I've watched him he at least puts in effort and knows what the other team is trying to do. That's why I think he will be a far cry from the type of sieve at PF such as Love. I don't expect him to be a lockdown defender, but he wont give up more than he gets.

as a post/interior defender he is clueless in terms of rotations.
he is much better staying in front of the ball or defending in the perimeter.
I doubt he ever becomes an adequate defender in terms of covering bigs, he can be a good one when it comes to lock down a perimeter guy I guess.

Made this comparison a couple weeks ago.
D'Angelo had this to say about Simmons in an interview that was posted on NBA.com today

MT: What were Embiid and Simmons like when you were at Montverde?
Russell: Joel didn’t blow up until college. He was good, but nobody knew he was going to be a pro. Ben came when he was a sophomore and I was a junior – he’s actually a year older than me (20). But I knew he’d be a pro right away. He’s so versatile. He was a guy you couldn’t put into a box. He did everything. … he reminds me of (Giannis) Antetokounmpo.

I can't believe LSU just keep losing, with Ben performing each and every game, no less.

So do you think he can effectively cover NBA 3's?

The issue is that alot of the players on this years LSU team are ball hogs and they shoot at horrible percentages.
Rather than go inside to Ben they look for their own shots and try to often to hit a 3. Pretty much anytime the ball goes into Ben which isn't often, it results in an easy basket or he hits someone for an assist. When the players stop hogging it and start looking for Ben most of the time, good things will happen and there will be alot more wins.

I completely agree with you, but I still find it somewhat surprising that they're still not able to win a lot of these games based on sheer talent.
They could play so much better than they are.

It's hard to win when your team shoots 2/14 from three.
Simmons and Victor combined for 40 points on 13/22 from the field.
The rest of the starting lineup went 5/20.
Also Ben is averaging 6 points in the first half and 13 in the second half.
He needs to be way more aggressive early in the game.

Re: Ben Simmons
This is partly down to Ben. He wants to do what he thinks is required to get the win, involving his teammates. At the moment though, he and Victor are the only ones bringing it. At the moment, Victor is a putrid ft shooter however and Ben needs to take the game on more, look for his own shot especially in the first half. I feel like Ben has too many friends on that team, wants to involve them and doesn't want to ruffle any feathers. Very Australian thing to do

Re: Ben Simmons
I agree with the above two posts that Ben does need to take the game into his hands more. The way he was playing towards the end of the game (where he was forced to take the reigns and look to score), is how he needs to approach the game more. You can still set-up team-mates at the same time (although to a slightly lesser degree), but you can't just constantly look to pass it for assists when your team mates aren't knocking down the shots.
LSU needs to learn how to rebound much better defensively as well. They allow a putrid amount of offensive rebounds.

Re: Ben Simmons
He's one of those players who seems almost too good for college, like AD and Durant in their freshman year...
To his credit, he's not using the fact that he should probably be in the NBA already as an excuse for lazy play. Carrying himself very professionally, to the point where you almost wish he'd try more things just for fun and to explore the limits of his game instead of sticking to what he knows best.
