If you're a gangster rapper type of guy YG, Kevin Gates, Jay Rock, and Schoolboy all provide that grit.
There's not a "Gangster" rapper today that Kane can probably relate to, there really isn't. The beats aren't grimy like they used to, there's no music out there that can give you the same feel. That sensation of getting that first needle in the arm while getting inked up, there's no music that can replicate that. Hell producers with all their equipment can't even make a beat that just goes in anymore. Don't get me wrong there's still a ton of rappers/producers that I love, but the quality has definitively fallen off and that's not even debatable. Who truly is the greatest beat maker/producer right now?

I think the bigger issue is that there isn't a next-generation J Dila or 9th Wonder. Instead, the big time young producer is obviously Metro Boomin' whom works best on trap beats.
Gangster rap is a dying breed, but backpack/conscious rap stock is going up rather quickly.

Re: OT: The Life of Pablo
MP, I think 2015 had AMAZING music. Summertime '06, The Album About Nothing, TPAB all are albums that I've kept in rotation after its season. Plus, this alternative rap that GoldLink and Anderson Paak got going on is really groovy.

BPT my gym anthem.
Love that album. Vince is a gangster rapper and Summertime '06 was AOTY, imo.

I actually ran into Rock last week, told him we still missing P and just gave me a pound. His man found it a little funny that a random white guy actually knew who he was though. But yeah as far as the line most people hear the word rook and automatically assume rookies. They were playing checkers when everyone else was playing chess.

Black Milk has that title for me, his albums have been steady good. Exile makes some soulful beats, Apollo Brown is making good music. But yeah everyone right now just go for radio beats, DJ Mustard and his damn fruity loops has set back producers for a few years.
Fury wrote:My Krazy Life is pretty dope as far as gangsta music goes
Speaking of Mustard, the album is solid but it's hard to really take it serious with him producing most of the album.

If we talking 2015, I'd give the nod to Kendrick (TPAB had amazing, cohesive lyrics with interwoven themes and storytelling) and Lupe (one of the GOATs lyrically with T&Y being his best since The Cool).
Anyway, I'll wait until the CDQ drops before I give the new Kanye album a try. I've noticed a massive dropoff in music quality since MBDTF, with WTT being his only good project since. He's lost artistically, trying too far to push the envelope, and in the process losing his foundation and what made him so good to begin with. I really enjoyed Real Friends and No More Parties In LA, though, so hopefully I latch on to at least a couple of these songs. I've heard it sounds almost like a compilation album, which isn't a good sign since one of Kanye's greatest attributes is to develop consistent, thorough and cohesive projects. We'll see.
I really, really hope he at least tries to go back to his roots with the next LP, though. Possibly a more modern, updated version of his soul-influenced sampled production, with more easy-going lyrics and flow, and quality features that make sense over trendy features or guys from his inner-circle that don't fit the tone of the project.

It's officially out & from an unbiased standpoint, this album is dope off the 1st listen. More hits than misses at the very least.
