To attract free agents, the Celtics need to win in the playoffs. And not just beat a team like the Hornets, but either beat Toronto or give CLE/TOR a hell of a series. They need to get vets the sense that if they just add 1-2 pieces they can truly contend. I think we're further off from that in the minds of most guys. Frankly, it may take a trade even on top of that to force a star to join, which will make it easier for the 2nd star we want/need to buy in.

^ I don't agree. I don't think advancing a round or not will make an ounce of difference to a premier free agent. At this point, Brad is a known commodity, there is consensus around the league that we are a team on the rise. Either a guy wants to take the money and be here or not. Beating Toronto in the playoffs will not make one iota of difference.

One thing this trade deadline did was to cement Carmelo Anthony's legacy as a great player who really didn't care about winning. He probably had a chance to go for a ring in either Cleveland or LA and he took neither opportunity. He's what's wrong with professional sports. Players with that type of talent with no fire to win a championship. At one point in time I thought I wanted Carmelo here, now that guy will be a Knick until his contract expires or Phil figures out a way to trade him. Then he'll figure out a way to fleece Prokohov in BKN to keep him in NYC. Sad, sad, sad.

More talent headed west in the long term. Two more potential late lotto picks head west at the deadline for average type guys.

Edit - 6 of the top 9 and 11 of the top 16 picks this year currently headed to the WC.

well played by the Suns for once. I was surprised they got that good of a pick.

I'm not surprised, I'm shocked... In what world is Markieff worth a lotto pic? He's a good rotation player at best, if he doesn't have the offcourt issues...
Good assessment:

So much NBA podcasting going on. The Vertical's Front Office Roundtable is pretty informative. Their first episode featured FO guys from Houston, Utah, and GS. (recorded pre-trade deadline)

Disagree strongly with that. Would mean ECFs and Brad's cute mug all over the place. The real issue is that there's probably only one FA that matters.

C'mon man, do you really think that Brad having a little more national TV exposure is going to be a mitigating factor to a premier free agent? Do you think that premier free agents with impending free agency don't know who Brad is, don't have enough exposure to him already?

Remove yourself from being a fan and put yourself in the place of a player. The league is a SMALL circle. Players, coaches, agents - EVERYONE involved in the league knows EVERYTHING about EVERYONE. Our team advancing an extra round in the playoffs is not going to suddenly give a free agent MORE info on Brad or our team. Honestly, it's a narrative that sounds good to us fans but I stand by my opinion that either a free agent wants our money and wants to be here, and it very well could be because they want to play for Brad. I don't discount that, in fact I think it's a KEY recruiting tool. I just don't think that advancing one more round in the playoffs makes an ounce of difference to a free agent making his decision.

Either he wants to play for Brad, live in this city and thinks that he can be a difference maker to this team on the rise. Beating Toronto or not beating them this year in the playoffs will not change that.

I don't know how much impact it would really have but the optics of making the ECF (beginning May 15-17) while securing a mid-to-high lotto pick (May 17) would be pretty nice.

Yeah, I'm trying to. Toronto has been strong in the last couple of seasons for the regular season. When did they lose? I think the first round or 2nd round. I don't even remember exactly. If they made the ECFs and went 5-7 against CLE or MIA previously, I think of them a bit differently. Otherwise, I think they are just overachieving wannabes in a crap conference. It's why Ujiri camping out LaMarcus Aldridge meetings look crazy, even if they were the 3 seed last year.

Yeah the Celtics would be all over ESPN if they were hitting the ECF while securing a top 3 pick in a dream scenario. You would be kidding yourself if you think there wouldn't be a difference to free agents if we made the ECF instead of getting knocked out of the first round. A hard fought complete 7 game series in the second round would be fine, but getting knocked out of the first round would really hurt any sales pitch Ainge would be preparing.

Rumor Ainge might be interested in Steve Novak.

Darren Wolfson@DWolfsonKSTP

Closet Steve Novak fan after he dropped five 3s on #Twolves here March '14. Celtics + Bucks among teams kicking tires on him, I hear. No MN.

Just saw a post about DA's interview with Toucher & Rich - says he had a deal lined up for a superstar and the other (unnamed) team backed out last minute.

IMO had to be Griffin or Love and I'm leaning towards Griffin.

Apparently he went on and said it sets the groundwork for revisiting the trade later on and points out that they talked about/chased KG for 2 years before they got him.

I don't understand how anybody can take Bobby Marks seriously. During their deadline special he was arguing that Boston should have been willing to part with Brooklyn picks for Horford. I was thinking "yeah, you're one of the idiots that undervalued those picks the first time they were traded."

He know's some of the ins and outs of the CBA that most writers don't, but his opinions are garbage, and that advantage is going to dissipate when a new CBA goes into effect. I haven't been all that impressed with the Vertical. Woj's interviews are boring as all hell. He's got a lot of guys that should stick to writing attempting to do pod/broadcasting. Scal is the exception.
"Danny Ainge needs to shut the **** up and manage his own team. He was the biggest whiner when he was playing, and I know that because I coached against him."
