Re: 2015/16 Offseason: More active than Shakira's hips
PS- holy **** I need to sleep. had a chance to read back what I wrote and my grammar and spelling was down right embarrasing. i haven't had much sleep since thursday, the first hotel had bedbugs and the second night, we drove down to Tucson to see my aunt and slept there but had to fight through Friday 5 O'clock Phoenix downtown traffic to get there, then back to Camelback the very next day and to a hotel by the airport we stayed had lost all of its elevators and we had to make 8 flights of stairs whenever we needed to go in and out, and I tell you boys, don't get a hotel room by the airport as the planes' noises will keep you all night. I stayed by the CamelBack last year and they had a bikers' rally right next door and couldn't sleep at all, thought I was being smarter with my arrangements but remember, Ramada in Peoria have bedbugs....... I can live with the bad luck of having a mechanical failure such as malfunctioning elevators since that is a rare occasion, but sanitary issues with the room is a whole different animal....

Anybody think Charlie Culberson has a shot at making the roster?
still think Joc should have had to compete for CF.
thanks, Quake, and I don't think we have room for Culbertson unless we trade/cut Carl Crawford AND Alex Guerrero... which I don't think is very likely for either at this point. hopefully we keep Charlie down in AAA in case of an injury to say, Seager or ****, the only suitable back up SS or any SS for that matter, as the 25 men projection stands of now. my feeling is that the management wants **** to have near the starter type of at bats, and it will have to come from being the primary backup at SS and CF, while probably getting more starts at LF, 2B, and 3B as well as a PH. 400 AB would be the target imo.

Leading Up to Opening Day
I agree that Joc should have to compete for his job, but I'm fine with Roberts naming him the opening day starter. Pederson says he's not going to take it for granted and that work needs to be continued. It'll be one less thing for Joc to worry about as he tries to recapture his form. At the same time, I think everyone is aware that Trayce Thompson will be ready to take over if and when Joc falters. Thompson hasn't done much at this point to separate him from the competition, anyway.
There seems to be some concern with Alex Wood being scratched as a precaution since forearm tightness is a precursor to eventual Tommy John surgery. Our depth is already being taxed and much of the pitching that can be counted upon isn't anticipated to be ready until later on in the season as opposed to from the start.
Culberson's glove would be nice on the roster, but overall, he doesn't seem to provide enough value with our crowded roster. I think Guerrero could possibly be waived, especially with the likelihood of Crawford or Ethier being dealt now lowered.

Glad to see Justin Turner make it back out there.
Has a double today as well.
Trayce Thompson with a homer.
Magic Mike going scoreless through 4 as far as I can see (no longer looking at the stats).
Oh and to me he seems like he's in a dead heat with Beachy. I dunno if Beachy has more of an argument over Mike at all but it does seem like the FO favors Beachy.
Ryu threw off of a mound today….thank goodness.
Now all we need is to hear some more positive news from Frankie Montas and I'll be somewhat content going into the year.

anybody troubled by Kazmir getting beat around the ball park?
or it's ST and he'll be fine by the time the season starts?

Springing Forward with Progress
Glad to see progress made by our pitchers and position players, but I'm cautiously optimistic for now until we get closer to Opening Day as the early portion of Spring Training is about getting work in to get to a polished state of readiness. Likewise, I'm not overly concerned with Kazmir at this point. For him, it's a matter of getting into the groove. I'd be concerned if it was an injury or something given the amount of hurt arms we already have.
At least our bullpen seems to be a spot of encouragement, especially with Chris Hatcher's rise post-injury last season:

When we compared Hatcher's fastball to Davis', we meant it. Check out how similar the vital Statcast™ numbers were from the two right-handed flamethrowers:
Davis: 95.9 mph / 2,397 rpm / 10.5 inches vertical movement
Hatcher: 96.4 mph / 2,400 rpm / 10.2 inches vertical movement
When informed of the similarity, Hatcher laughed. "Believe it or not, that's the guy I watch film of when we're facing a team that they have played, to see what he does. Our stuff, it's kind of similar. His might be a little more electric."
But early in the season, Hatcher was too reliant on his high-spin, high-velocity four-seamer. (The Major League average spin rate for a four-seam fastball was 2,226 rpm, while the average velocity was 92.9 mph.) While Davis mixes in a curve and a cutter nearly 50 percent of the time to keep hitters off-balance, Hatcher was throwing his fastball nearly two-thirds of the time before he was hurt. When he came back, he introduced a cutter and increased usage of his slider and splitter, considerably varying his repertoire.

SMFH.
So Kazmir's velo is down from last year when he was averaging 91 MPH but able to touch 94.
There's a dark cloud trying to follow me and punish me just because I like Friedman.

Re: 2015/16 Offseason: More active than Shakira's hips
among the healthy guys, the pitching pecking order should go like this
1. Kershaw
2. Maeda
3. Kazmir
4. Bolsinger
5. Wood
6. Beachy
7. Lee
at this point I think Maeda is the better #2 than Kazmir. and Magic Mike deserves his shot. he is proven already that he can pitch at a high level with no dominant stuff last season. it doens't hurt that it also balances L-R-L-R-L for our rotation.

I'm just going to operate from the perspective that Ryu won't be back this year.
That way, everything else will be a plus for me.

Re: 2015/16 Offseason: More active than Shakira's hips
i am disappointed in my wife's distant cousin Ryu not pitching sooner, but I understand. we have enough depth, he has a guaranteed contract that doesn't pay any more or less to come back any earlier than when he is truly healthy and ready, so I would rather have him back when he is 100%, even if that is not in this season at all.
on the other hand, I am excited to see what a full season of Magic Mike has in for us. I am telling you guys, MIke Bolsinger was no fluke last season, just gotta hope that he hasn't forgotten what made him successful last season. it wasn't velocity but control and outfoxing the sequence of pitches.

Re: 2015/16 Offseason: More active than Shakira's hips
I'm really just not gonna count on Ryu being ready. If you really think about it, his shoulder has been balky for about a year and a half now. Mentally, I'm checking out of him being available for 2016.
Bringing me to my next point.
I think we should go get a pitcher. Let the season play some. Let a market develop.
But we need to be in on a pitcher.
Kazmir all time lows on velo?
There's some kind of black cloud following this team....incredibly **** luck for every player and every move even if they make sense.

Edit: Urias and De Leon were also officially cut. Looks like the competition for the 5th starter spot in the rotation has been narrowed down to Beachy, Bolsinger, Lee, and maybe Frias.

Beachy not great today.
The walks in the 2nd did him in.
Still did a great job of getting weak contact after that and the balls just had eyes.
Stat line will suck but he wasn't as bad as it reads.

Keith Law on the Joc and Trayce scenario
JayMac: Trayce Thompson has always struck me as one of those guys who ends up having more success in the bigs than in the minors. You think he has a real shot at being a regular out in center?
Klaw: I don’t see why that would specifically be the case for him, but he has gradually improved over the last two years to the point where I could see him becoming a low-OBP, 20-HR regular with plus-plus defense in center. If you’re the Dodgers, that’s probably better than what you can expect from Joc, right?
How come the idea of a Trayce - Joc - Yasiel OF is never broached?
It's CF or bust for Trayce? That OF would be covered if we put him in left.
