3 for Favors, max Whiteside, Crowder/Bradley for Barnes.. Then bank on offensive growth from Favors, Olynyk, Barnes, Smart with more touches..

Disastrous offensive team.

Barnes?....BARNES---?....Barnes sucks...Crowder and Bradley are both better...Why on earth would we trade both of them for Barnes--?

Re: The Official Off-Season Thread, part I of many
I hate Bradley/Crowder for Barnes, I'm just imagining scenarios.. Getting Barnes for those two seems like a classic 'WTF' Ainge move. Remember we all scratched our heads at the Bradley pick and at getting Crowder+ for Rondo.
I think Barnes is overrated, he takes too long to make decisions when he has the ball, you can see the wheels turning in his head slowly. Doesn't have any moves to reliably get by people. But for all that, he has 20 ppg potential, he can score, in ugly ways, over length, and he's young enough to keep getting better. Something like Jeff Green with motivation, and the ability to curl and hit midrange shots like Rip Hamilton.. Weird player. But Ainge supposedly loved him years ago, and he's a guy like Harden who could blow up with opportunities.
I don't love Barnes as a player and I don't like that trade, but I do think there's a good chance we see a deal like it that blindsides the fan base..

I just woke up from a nightmare that we traded for Demarcus Cousins.

From September, Zach Lowe has a detailed analysis of Barnes' game circa 2014-15.
That bit sounds so much like Avery Bradley before he got force fed reps.. And if there's a coach who can use Barnes right, get him playing right, and slowly give him more responsibilities, it's Stevens.
Just something to keep in mind.. Most likely Barnes signs a max offer sheet somewhere else (Indiana is one rumor) and GS decides whether to pay him.

Barnes just hasn’t looked comfortable driving with the ball, and he knows it. He gets tunnel vision, forcing up shots when easy passes are available. He doesn’t have the fluid change of pace the best ball handlers use to prod defenses open. He sometimes spooks at the first sight of a help defender, as if he’s afraid to make mistakes. He doesn’t appear to feel the game. What happens when defenses trap him against the pick-and-roll? Or go under picks, daring him to can off-the-dribble 3s?

Re: The Official Off-Season Thread, part I of many
Another option is to go with bargain vets in free agency- say, Mirza Teletovic as a stretch 4 instead of Ryan Anderson, and Mahinmi as a 5 instead of Howard or Whiteside. Let Sullinger go, re-sign Turner.. If you've managed to trade the pick for Cousins or Butler, or Gallo/7 or Hayward/12 (makes sense for us to call on both), you're in position to win 50 while keeping flexibility.
Just to say we're all thinking about two max free agents (Horford/Durant), but given the kinds of help this team needs, there are a lot of other ways to get incrementally better if that fails.

Ainge isn't trading Bradley/Crowder for Barnes. Don't worry. He isn't stupid.

Re: The Official Off-Season Thread, part I of many
There are two scenarios that could take place with Barnes.
One is GSW likes his versatility to switch on defense, and offensively he just needs to hit wide open threes, occasionally drive, and pass the ball. So, they sign him to whatever contract they negotiate.
Two is that they decide they can do better for less and move on. In which case anyone can sign him outright.
The value of a sign and trade is gone unless a team wants to use a player on their team to match contracts because they can't sign him outright. There is no fifth year, and we are in a position where we could sign him outright.
GSW could really go either way with Ezeli and Barnes this offseason. I would think that both would be back, as both Bogut and Iggy come off the books when Curry's contract is up, so there will be room to resign him. They could have the core of Klay, Curry, Green, Ezeli, Barnes signed for at least three more seasons with a Curry extension. Seems like that should be the plan. Sign vets for the bench, and work in the draft picks as well.

I have been trying to formulate a list of free agents that takes into account the likelihood of the player actually being a free agent, and not signing with his current squad. So far I got:
Guards
Rondo
Crawford
Jennings
Eric Gordon
Matt Barnes
Lawson
Lin
JR Smith
Deron Williams
Afflalo
Mo Williams
Beal
Clarkson
Waiters
Galloway
Forwards

Al Jefferson
Ryan Anderson
Noah
Pachulia
Teletovic
Scola
Mozgov
Howard
Gasol
Biyombo
Bass
Sullinger
Montiejunas
Terrence Jones
Miles Plumlee

The Official Off-Season Thread, part I of many
Interesting quote about potentially 'overpaying' for a rim protector this offseason from Ainge
If you look at the current roster, the entire team is a strong positive value contract-wise. And like others have mentioned he has so far given up zero future asset potential for win-now type moves.
So 'overpay' in my mind may be more like 'pay the market rate' when you look at it in context with the rest of the team.
Just not sure who that guy would be.

Noah seems to have the best impact on the team.
Whiteside fits our age group and the best of the bunch really.
Howard still has a positive impact, and is still a specimen.
Mozgov is solid, and is the best shooter of the group.
Biyombo is the young guy, but I don't think we have enough offense to bring him in.

Whiteside should be the target. Athletic, not old and still has upside.

That write-up actually suggests Bradley for Barnes straight-up.
Not much impresses me about Barnes. Not even a jack of all trades and not close to a master at any.

I'm kind of starting to come around on this idea. We need a rebounder/rim protector and he's probably the best out there. I'd rather him than Horford and it would be fun to have a core of Bradley/Smart/Crowder/Whiteside defensively. His mental make-up bothers me, idk maybe once he's paid he'll start to play more team defense.
