I'll stick to my worries about over-paying Beal and and someone like Jeff Green or Harrison Barnes. Trading for Waiters seems like a relative long-shot.

Put another way, my real fear is that he'll manage to lose us Porter.
This has to be a very real fear because it's Grunfeld.
But...it's not just Grunfeld. On Twitter, there's a basketball writer working for a network (I wish I could remember the names; I think it was someone with CBS) who was fretting about what OKC will do if they're "priced out" of re-signing Waiters. Which assumes a) Waiters is any good; and b) there's going to be robust market for him.
"He's a former fourth overall pick in the draft, who has a lot of potential," future Grunfeld said. "He brings good size, defensive presence and some shooting. Also the versatility to defend multiple positions. He's a guy who I've liked since he was in middle school."
Trading Porter is a serious concern for me too. He's getting significantly underrated by the basketball media around town, and that's sometimes a sign that he's getting talked down by people within the organization. Porter has the profile of a guy who's going to have a good NBA career over the next decade. He probably won't become a star, but he's going to be quite solid.
I'm not too worried. Remember that Grunfeld is predictable and unimaginative, and his primary motivation is self preservation. He won't resign Waiters to replace Beal because it would be an admission that he failed by drafting Beal. He'd much rather just overpay Beal. Likewise, he wouldn't trade Porter for Waiters because it would be an admission that he "failed" by drafting Porter (who isn't actually a failure at all). Finally, from a strict logical standpoint, it makes little sense to trade our only starting caliber SF for a SG who will back up Beal (and possibly Sato).
Grunfeld might indeed be dumb enough to trade Porter. But I suspect he would trade Porter for an established veteran who is currently perceived as better than Porter, but with no upside. A guy like Luol Deng fits the bill.
I could see him doing something stupid like Ariza and a pick/cheap player for porter.
I feel like there are SG options out there to go and get on the cheap, Vander Blue would be a solid pick up, Jordan Hamilton would be nice too! Both would ad solid depth behind beal and Tomas. Honestly tomas will probably play almost 25 - 30 minutes a game off the bench, he can play 1 and 2 and defend 3 and 4. he will probably start if beal goes down. I think small stuff like that would be best instead of panic trading for a 2 guard when you have beal and tomas. Beal is getting a max deal and tomas could end up being a euro league champ, maybe even finals MVP? who knows. A guy who the staff knows like Vander blue would make a lot of sense and he played really well in the D league last year. We did this with Temple a few years ago, we gave him a few looks and finally brought him in and kept him.

Atlanta is looking to grab Noel (for Teague) - i.e. them not us.

I don't think Porter is going anywhere. For one thing, Ted has said "we like our core." For another, Brooks is said to be "very high on Porter."
(Btw -- isn't "porter" a kind of beer? How high can you get on beer?)

More on the Philly big man move(s) that may be in the offing, and which I wish wish wish could help us -- apparently, they are confident that Embiid will be healthy this season, and they are planning to pick Ben Simmons #1. Hence, at least one of Noel/Okafor will go.
They are including Stauskas and Covington in deals they are offering. I'd be happy to take Noel and Covington for Beal, especially if in place of Stauskas we were able to acquire either their #24 or #26 pick (and grab Brice Johnson). Unfortunately, I don't suppose this is likely.

You just need a little help from your friends.

Man I'd love for the Wizards to somehow come away with Brice Johnson.

Interesting. Philly's got enough assets so that they could add both Teague and Beal and all of a sudden go from a putrid backcourt to a very solid one. I'd love to steal Covington and his ultra cheap contract - though he's coming off a disappointing season. He's long enough to play some stretch 4 if they have him bulk up a little. His size, length, and numbers are a lot like Ariza's if he can cut down on the fouls and to's.

Think some of these names are interesting though not sure we have trade chips.

Ben Standig keeps pushing Teletovic and Ilyasova as backup bigs. Still need rim protector.

It's not only about about having trade chips in the form of players. He's talking about absorbing players with our cap space. For example, one of his suggestions is Afflalo because the Knicks won't have max cap space (assuming he exercises his option). So maybe they simply want him off their cap so they can sign someone else.
And before a certain someone jumps in to say this isn't an option, that's exactly what the Spurs did wth Tiago Splitter in order to sign Aldridge last summer:
http://www.nba.com/spurs/spurs-trade-tiago-splitter-atlanta-hawks
So even without players to give up, the Wizards might still be able to add to the roster via trades with teams that need to augment their cap space. This offseason has the potential to be crazy, so anything is possible IMO.

Nightmare.
More old players come our way w/ their multi-year, pre-retirement contracts as they slide down the chute out of the league.
Just what we need - not. But, definitely right in the Ernie Grunfeld wheelhouse.

I'd take Collison on a vet minimum contract as an emergency 5th big and mentor. Those other guys don't interest me at that price.

I'd love Thaddeus Young, but I don't think the Nets would give him away. And I'm against giving up future 1st rounders at this stage.
Lou Williams would be a decent option. Although I would prefer Seth Curry in a scoring role off the bench, he's younger, cheaper & just as bad as a defender lol.
The rest of the list is terrible.

Yeah, those were the only two on the list to interest me at all.

Re: 2016 Offseason Thread -- Not (just) #KD2DC
Well, I just can't see why anyone would be interested in Thaddeus Young at this point -- and especially not at $40m for the next 3 seasons. But I'm not going to argue about it.
Lou Williams is more interesting. Thing is, however, that practically speaking there is no set of veterans we can acquire with cap space that will make the Wizards a really good team. Hence, pursuing that path only locks in more and more years of mediocrity -- at best.
At this point there is only one significant off-season move, as far as I can see -- fire Ernie Grunfeld. Since it seems that ain't happening, it's hard to see a positive direction for us in the near future.
But, hey... I've been wrong before. Who knows? Maybe Kevin Durant will descend from the sky in an aegis and save us. No. He won't

PIF I think there is a way we get better this year. Even if KD says no this year, we are not going to build the team the same this year. we are going all in regardless. I think back up plan one is whiteside, Other than that I think we should just try to get some really good players in here, and maybe not max anyone.

I'd see if we could pry away T. Jones from Hou.. he was pretty good initially.. this last season tho... injury risk... but perhaps attainable? Plus he actually is young...
