Cuban might not be the reason they're striking out on Free Agents.

From that reddit thread there are a few posters who point out that a number of players have had problems with him playing mind games, not giving trust and micromanaging. He seems like he might be a bit polarizing for players, because it's his way or the highway. That attracts some players and repels others. Free Agency is a domain where you really don't want to be potentially turning away the best players available.

Obviously he's a great coach and this might be conjecture and really more down to bad luck in free agency earlier on and now the overall feeling that it's Dirk's twilight now.

No, they really are. There's no need to beat around the bush. Everybody trashes Minnesota for not being able to build around Garnett, but really, except for the last couple of seasons, the teams Garnett had around him weren't much worse than what Nowitzki had, and that was with a cheaper owner and having their draft picks taken away. That one Cassell/Spree/Wally team was arguably better than any of Dirk's teams and would have certainly beaten the Lakers if Cassell hadn't gotten injured.

Dallas's front office is complete garbage and were only really any better than the Knicks because they had Dirk Nowitzki.

The Mavs were a laughing stock for years even decades, I mean seriously epic bad, then Cuban bought them.

He brought a new life, a fresh young vibe, a different, new money style, not old stuffy money. That rise was appealing.

They were the shiny new toy, up and coming so the rise from the depths on the wings of brash Cuban was easy to root for.

They reached the mountain top after struggling to get there for over more than a decade to get a title.

Except the Mavs are in the west and the number of great franchises there made it nearly impossible to stay on top.

So the return to just another middle of the pack team in the west took the shine off them and the moves being made could be criticized.

We will see what the next generation of the Mavs will be, will it be another rise to the top, a crash back down to a long rebuilding process or will they become a treadmill team that throws big money around reaching for glory but failing.

Time will tell.

.

Mavs were a good team in the 80's and were bad in the 90's. They were never a laughing stock in the 80's nor were they bad for mulitple decades.

Dirk has more to do with the team's turnaround than Cuban.
Dirk was already a member of the team when Cuban bought the Mavs. Cubes had nothing to do with the draft day trade of Traylor for Dirk. I have a feeling just as Cuban Fubar when he had the opportunity to draft Giannis he would have probably drafted differently the year Dirk was drafted. Cuban probably would have traded that pick for a veteran on their last legs.

I may have exaggerated how long they were bad but they had one of if not the worst winning % of any team in the 90s.

Cuban bought a team that hadn't had a winning season in a decade even if they had a sophomore Dirk on the roster.

He helped build around Dirk and they made the finals twice, winning the title once, that can't be denied.

Teams don't win titles without those elite players but those players don't win either without having a great team around them, not even LeBron and Cuban helped in getting to be that.
