I'm just not sure it's the best use of resources.
Say Zizic does beat him out, then what? Then we've paid a 1st rounder for a "back up" center who will either have to be paid good money or let walk?
Too shortsighted of a move IMO.
Definitely a valid argument. Cap room goes out the window in 2018, though it would anyway unless they deal KO and at least two out of the IT/AB/Crowder/Smart group ahead of it.
I have previously advocated looking to see if they could get Aldrich from Minny on the cheap (read: Zeller or Jerebko and MAYBE a 2nd round pick) if we're looking for a defensive center option primarily. But there are also a good deal of big man options in the free agent market in 2017 at varying likely price points depending upon what they are looking for, including Noel who brings an athletic element currently missing.
As you know, I love Nurkic, but I don't see them going that route. Much of it are the points you bring out, but, looking specifically at doing so this year, the likelihood of really being able to work him into the current structure is a cause for concern and I don't see Ainge wanting to possibly rock the boat. He's surely done that in the past (Perkins), but this is a different time and so much is still so up in the air as it is.
