Amir is a good defensive player. Stats(adjusted and non-adjusted), eye test, Brad, whatever. It's kind of a blatant truth. He's long, smart, quick enough, and has underrated strength. Can't rebound, but is good in spite of it. Pretty much the case with all of our bigs.

Amir is a good player, but his body cannot just stay a lot of time on the court. He would be ideal coming from the bench subbing Horford, but you can see that Stevens prefers to sacrify Amir´s body rather than giving minutes to other much less efficient players like Zeller or Mickey.

Even forgetting that George Hill is 31 and not remotely worth $20 million, why in God's name would he sign here? To not play? By the time free agency comes along we may have IT, Smart, Rozier, and one of Fultz, Ball, or Dennis Smith on the roster.

Hill inevitably is going to sign with a team that has both money and minutes for a lead guard. We're pretty much the last team someone like him would (or should) consider.

Given that I directly stated if we brought him in, it'd be to replace Smart and his minutes, I find it a little disingenuous that you're counter is partly that he wouldn't play because of Smart. But I guess I shouldn't expect more from the guy who struggles with such complex concepts such as restricted free agency.

Ugh. I hate to say this, but you're the one who doesn't understand free agency - restricted or unrestricted. You don't seem to get how or why players sign in either case.

George Hill is not going to survey the NBA landscape in his last shot at a big contract and choose a team with an all-star (and perhaps all-NBA) point guard in front of him. He's going to go somewhere where he will get both big minutes and big money, to a team that needs a veteran presence at point guard.

That could be Philly, Brooklyn, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Utah, or even his old team Indiana, if Teague leaves. It could be Chicago or Orlando or New Orleans. A half-dozen other teams are possibilities depending on how their summers play out - Denver might give up on Mudiay, for instance.

But here? Even if the Cs cut bait with Smart, that won't be until the year after. So Hill would have to pass over all of those point-guard needy teams - including a place where he's thrived, like Utah - to spend his last effective years in the league fighting for bench minutes. Even if we moved Smart, there will likely still be 2-3 young point guards in the bench, possibly including someone like Markelle Fultz.

Hill would have to be mentally ill to sign here. It would be like Greg Monroe picking Philly, only worse.

Conversely you seem not to get the free part of restricted free agency. If Nerlens Noel thinks there's a chance in hell Philly will match, he's not signing an offer sheet anywhere for any amount of money. He'll play on his tender and leave the following year.

On the other hand if he signs an offer sheet, you can be sure he and his agent have already ascertained that Philly isn't matching. This isn't Allen Crabbe, who was happy with the money no matter who paid it and didn't mind leaving it up to chance (in fact he probably preferred staying in Portland). Noel, like Hill, wants starter minutes. Philly can't offer that, just like Boston can't offer that to Hill. So whether it's now or next year, he's signing elsewhere.

A) Sigh. You're now shifting the goal posts. You are arguing a player "not remotely" worth 20M a year would turn down a clear overpay (by your earlier definition) "in his last shot at a big contract" because he wants a situation where he'd get more than the theoretical 30 MPG I carved out in my hypothetical situation. So Hill is going to accept much less money, for 3-6 more minutes a night on a worse team (Philly, Brooklyn, Minnesota, Milwaukee, Sacramento, Utah, Indiana, Chicago, Orlando or New Orleans, from your earlier list)? So much for "his last shot at a big contract", I guess. Or trying to win a title.

This is tiring. You're speaking out of both sides of your mouth.

B) here's another relevant quote I said a few posts earlier:

SmartWentCrazy wrote:This original topic came up when I listed 5-10 players that I felt were worth holding onto cap space for over trading for Vucevic. You can strike Hill, or anyone else really, but max cap space as an asset will help us out more long term than 36 games of Vucevic this year. Worse case scenario, you can trade for him in the offseason after you strike out on anyone worth it.

I don't care about George Hill nor where he would go nor how much he's worth. I'm not going to continue to argue about him because that's nitpicking on an item that ignores what I was saying. My point was that I'd rather have max cap space as an asset than Nic Vucevic.

C) Nerlens Noel isn't turning down a 4 year 100mm deal to sign a 1 year ~7mm deal because of playing time concerns. Don't be dense. No one with his injury history would. An ACL tear has already cost him millions of dollars at this point-- he won't take that risk again.

He's also made it abundantly clear that all he cares about is money, which is why he wanted minutes, right back to his original twitter antics when he changed his avatar to indicate as such.

A guy like Vucevic would help too in the paint, rebounding always kills us

That was my thought watching the game last night, too. They need a second one-on-one scorer. Who's out there? The pipe dream would be Butler or George, the ugly expensive option would be Melo, and then there's a series of lesser players who might not be fits: Will Barton, Jahlil Okafor, Brook Lopez, Brandon Knight, Reggie Jackson, Goran Dragic, Tyreke Evans... who else?

Ainge will surprise us for sure. If we keep the BKN pick (I would say it´s 90% sure) we would probably choose another guard, so maybe a trade with one of our guards, expirings and other picks is what Ainge is putting on the table right now

According the Stein, Orlando would like a Wing, for Vučević.

Amir, Young, maybe Jackson, and a late pick.

A 3 way trade with Miami makes the most sense for all 3 teams:

ORL dragic
MIA orl 1st, one of bos 1st or mem or lac (no brk), expiring like Zeller
BOS Vucevic

I still think Bradley is the odd man out here, we simply have too many guards

If the Celtics want Vucevic the price is probably going to be something like

Zeller and Smart

Or

Amir, Rozier and a 1st rounder

Ainge is just doing his due diligence right now.

FWIW (which is probably very little)

The supposed "Kings Insider" in RealGM says the Celtics are trying to find a trade for Marcus Smart.

How would Nerlons Noel be a solution to a durability issue? Bradley has played 77 ad 76 games the last two seasons he has missed 9 games this year. Noel played 67 last year missed the 2nd half of his senior season and all of his rookie season and now has played 19 of his teams 45 games. He has played in 55% of his team's games since he was drafted 4 years ago.

Doesn't make sense to me, Smart is fine right where he is as a 6th man and running the second unit. Need to put a better scoring option next to him next season (an improved Jaylen Brown or our Brk pick). They should move Bradley now when his value is at its peak

Actually it makes 100 percent perfect sense if you feel you are likely to draft a PG (Ball/Fultz/DSJ),
planning to keep IT, see that Jaylen Brown can be used at the 2, have Rozier and Jackson waiting in the
wings, and can't afford to re-sign all three of IT/Bradley/Smart and see that it's better value wise to move Smart
now rather than after drafting a point, where like the Sixers situation, teams will have you at as a disadvantage,
because they know you have to move one of your excess...

-Were not going to pay 60M a year for a back court of AB and IT, and we clearly need to resign IT

-Noel's cap hold will be largely off-set by Bradley's salary, allowing us to still have max cap space

-The top draft prospects are guards who can largely play next to IT

-Noel would instantly both solidify our defense and improve our rebounding

I don't disagree with everything your saying here but the bold part is false and why Ainge won't make the deal. It actually does not impact our defense and rebounding at all because you make a huge hole in both aspects by trading Bradley. Bradley is 18% on the defensive glass and Noel 20%. I don't know what the numbers are but my eyeballs tell me this team's defense bottoms out without AB.

Then you factor in the difference on the offensive end and no way. I am fine with taking a flyer on Noel but no way do I deal away a core piece to acquire him expecting him to change the bottom line. I will deal with whether to pay Bradley or not when the time comes not before I even draft the guy who is supposedly going to be able to take his place.

I don't fully disagree with you regarding rebounds. My analysis is subjective, but is basically that the difference between Amir and Noel is greater than the difference between Smart and Bradley. I could be wrong, too, and fully acknowledge that I'm 100% basing it on opinion and not fact.

I feel I just can see the writing on the wall and that Ainge will get ahead of it. You cannot commit 60% of your cap to IT and AB, AB is about to enter the 'rental' zone and lose trade value and the top of the draft is very guard heavy. I believe we should look into dealing AB for a big man (maybe Noel isn't the best target, I'm not locked in on him), and, given Ainge's past with Rondo and Perkins, I wouldn't be shocked if a trade involving AB comes out of no where.

Completely on board with this team making a move to fix its rebounding. Larry Sanders instead of Tyler Zeller may be enough, but agreed something has to change up front.

It is fair to bring up Perk and Rondo in this situation. I think Evan Turner is another example. But remember Perk and Rondo had the chance to sign an extension stay here and chose not to. Now the market could have possibly topped what the rules limited Boston to offering those two players. In Perk's case he did very well because the rules allowed OKC to give him money in an extension that year, it was also a bad investment. Rondo would not bite on an extension that was at least 3 years and 45 mil and even under the new rules he will only make 36.5 mil over that time on soon to be 4 teams.

While AB and IT have certainly outplayed their contracts especially under the light of the new rules there is something to be said for the opportunity and environment contributing to that success. Why guys like Tony Parker and Manu Ginobli stayed in SA for less dollars than the market would bear? Boston isn't San Antonio but it isn't Sacramento, Charlotte or Philadelphia either.

Sorry to use the old cross sport reference but when you are talking about IT and AB there is some similarity to Edelman and the Patriots receiving corps. It is something to marvel at and enjoy but appreciate that 95% of the teams in the league aren't going to try and go that way.

I don't know that extensions are going to be an option with either player. I think in FA there will be interest in both players I do not think there will be 26 mil a year interest. I think your looking at more of a 15-18 per year range depending on length of contract and what continues to happen in the FA market this off season. Their personal preference is also going to be in play, while there may not be 50 win teams willing to pay up for their services they may be willing to go to the highest bidder. You may not be able to do anything about that until FA you can talk to them and get an understanding of where they are at.

But most importantly remember when Ainge traded Antoine Walker, Kendrick Perkins, and Rajon Rondo they were unpopular moves and the return was questioned but in the end he did the right think in all 3 cases.

On one hand I'll disagree with you, in that Smart can easily play minutes at the 3 from a defensive standpoint. However, if he is falling into the Evan Turner category where he is mostly only offensively helpful when he has the ball in his hands, this could be a good reason to deal him. Especially if you think you can develop Rozier into an asset eventually by doing so. I'm still leery of trading Marcus because of his defensive versatility, plus you still risk trading him for lower value looking back if he comes out next year and shows renewed promise of a 3 point shot.

Can we stop with the restricted versus unrestricted argument just in this thread? Maybe start one just for that, but my word hard to discuss/read about rumors when there's giant walls arguing free agency.

I agree but the clock is ticking on Bradley getting paid. So they either have to pay him or deal him, if we pay him and IT then this is your team + nets picks. Not a terrible thing by any means. Moving him now opens up more avenues for the future and helps to balance the roster at the same time

Beyond that Noel is not signing any deal that ends with him backing up Embiid for four years. Even if Philly was crazy enough to want to max him out, it's not all up to them. He can pull a Greg Monroe if he feels like it.

They pretty much have to trade Noel now.

I think it is true, you don't know how restricted free agents work. No matter what deal he signs, the Sixers can match it. If the sixers want to pay him max money to be a backup center, they can and there is nothing in the world that can stop it besides retiring.

No he is right he doesn't have to sign any deal and just take his QO like Monroe did. Read what he actually wrote.

Now I am not completely up to speed on the CBA changes and part of that is some of it isn't known yet but what is Noel's QO going to be? It was scheduled to be 5.8 mil, the CBA talks about a 45% increase in rookie scale but that is over 3 years, but I also saw something that said Noel's QO was going to be 13 mil. Tough to just sit on a 5.8 mil when teams are throwing 15-20 mil a season at you but a lot easier to sit on 13 mil.
