Re: The (Quadruple) Trade Thread, 2017 (Part 4.0)
My idea that Boston could substantially improve their LAC pick in a Melo trade starting to look like it has a real possibility.
NY will not want a 2021 LAC pick, too far out. Boston can supply the LAC '19 pick for their use and get a better, more valuable pick later. Potentially great way to turn two seconds into a future lotto pick.

But then we'd have to take on salary -- Crawford or Rivers or both -- while giving up our expiring players (Amir might be literally expiring atm) since Clips are hard-capped and don't want to part with BG/CP/DJ. Is that worth it for us?

The combination of the three of them will be roughly 65-75% of the cap. That's a real tough pill to swallow.
Given the plethora of guards in the draft, I'd bet that at least one of Smart/AB will be traded this deadline.

There's not much we can get. Reddick has value, at least, as a role player and expiring contract. But that doesn't make much sense for us unless we're adding him to add him (remember when we had Avery Bradley, Courtney Lee, and Jason Terry...), adding him as a hold-over to deal Bradley somewhere else, or adding him to flip him to another team.

Reddick is just another guy you have to cover for on defense. No thanks. Once again, to make any Melo-to-the-Clippers deal work, some team has to be induced to take Jamal Crawford or Austin Rivers. I'll puke if either of those players comes to Boston, regardless of what other inducements are offered.

It would be nice if they somehow would meet Orlando's desire for an established/proven wing scorer.

Not necessarily. They have the Clippers pick that needs to be sent to NY. They can provide that and get a better one with more upside in return.
They don't need to be involved in a ton of salary. That's NY's problem.

I didn't like how Smart acted last night. He needed a while to calm down. His outbursts have to be monitored because just a few days after the other issue, he had to be helped to simmer down by teammates last night.
I have to agree that his act recently has made a it a lot easier for Ainge to bandy his name around in rumors, sometimes you don't know what comes first there the chicken or the egg, maybe Smart knows they are discussing him in deals and he isn't to comfortable with it.

I don't know the veracity of this rumor, but CBS Sports was just saying that the Celtics are in talks with Orlando for Nikolai Vucevic. They said his defense used to suck, but it has improved quite a bit this season. A true 7 footer who is only 26 and has averaged through his career 14.5 points and 9.8 boards . . . . he can block a little, too. Whaddaya guys think? Who would the Magic want in return?

I'd take Speights from the Clips.

Okay, something like this? http://www.espn.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=hn9cges
NYK gets Young, Rozier*, Wes Johnson, Crawford, Brice Johnson, 2019 LAC 1st
BOS gets Pierce, 2021 unprotected LAC 1st
LAC gets Melo
*or a lesser player

If the Knicks are willing to take Jamal Crawford there is no need to involve a third team. The ESPN scenario makes no sense.

I don't see the Clippers moving Jordan but I think they might move Blake, why would you want Blake and Melo on the same team anyhow?
I have no interest in participating in a deal that does not land a star in Boston. I will give up draft picks, young players not named Jaylen Brown and expiring contracts to get that star.

There is no need to look at it that way. Boston makes its FA move before their contracts end then they can spend up over the cap all they want Wyc will pay the Lux Tax. At that point you need to start signing guys and then trading them not letting them leave because your afraid to pay the going rate.
I think Smart might get dealt but only because your dealing from strength not because your the Boston Celtics and now your afraid to pay people.

Marcus Smart. I like the contract, age, and stat line. Concerned about the defense. Smart seems to be in some sort conflict with our Head Coach at the moment and that isn't good. Bottom line is that Smart is as bad on offense as Vucevic is on defense. We need a big.

If Boston ends up being the third team, I wonder if there is any chance PP comes back. Unlikely with Crowder/Brown, I know, but I'm only wondering because I wanted to buy tickets to next week's game because it was supposed to be his last here, heh. Now I'm not so sure!

Boy is he tough to root for. I like the guy but the way he acts on the court is exactly the type of player I see myself disliking with a passion if he were on a rival team.
I wouldn't mind seeing him traded but hopefully they can get to a point where they sell high.
A guy who plays his ass off every possession, doesn't take crap or back down from anybody and who shows otherworldly support for his teammates is "tough to root for?"
Why are we even talking about this anyway? Just because some rando on a message board who claims to be an "insider" says we are trying to move Smart doesn't mean it is actually happening.
