Ranked light heavyweight Nikita Krylov released from UFC contract

Krylov (21-5 MMA, 9-3 UFC), a nine-fight veteran of the promotion, was let go in the wake of his most recent fight, a first-round submission loss to Misha Cirkunov at UFC 206 in December.

A UFC official confirmed Krylov’s release to MMAjunkie. He was removed from the latest version of the UFC official rankings on the promotion’s website.

“The Miner,” who joined the UFC roster in August 2014 at age 21, started his octagon tenure at heavyweight. After two fights he moved down to 205 pounds but lost his first fight in the weight class to former title contender Ovince Saint Preux.

Following the loss to “OSP,” Krylov, 24, rattled off five consecutive wins, all by stoppage, before dropping the UFC 206 contest to Cirkunov, who also recently parted ways with the UFC.

Krylov, No. 12 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light heavyweight rankings, has earned all 21 of his career victories by stoppage, with 19 of those wins coming inside the first round.

Krylov was a bit of a character, but he had won 5 in a row before his last loss and actually had a good UFC record.

Between cutting him and Circunov, what are they doing? Just getting rid of lhw? Or is the plan to let DC/Jones/rumble fight in perpetuity.

If they and Bader go to Bellator, they're going to have more of the top 4-15 LHW's than the UFC.

Usually they get a chance to match the contract but in practice, they've just been letting these guys walk and the word is that Rizin is gonna pay Horiguchi handsomely.

Agreed on Krylov and Cirkunov being bizarre too. Both guys would make for interesting match-ups with the rest of the division. With all of these ranked fighters that they're letting negotiate outside of the UFC and the whole "No more fight tapes for teams, they have to use Fight Pass" ...I'm really not confident in the direction with WME.

That's just crazy, Horiguchi might be the best flyweight in the world in a couple years.

LHW, the shallowest division in the UFC, has lost 3 ranked fighters in the past week or so with Krylov, Cirkunov, and Bader all gone. Bader I can see, but letting two young upside guys like Krylov and Cirkunov leave when they can't be that expensive is confusing to me.

Yeah, he's got the highest upside in that division (minus DJ of course).

It seems the new UFC owners believe the brand will carry the day, and are being a lot more frugal. While that has always proven to be true in the past, that is also because the UFC was smart about who they let leave and the volume of top guys they let leave. If the perception starts to become that the top guys aren't in the UFC, it will be a lot harder to sell the brand.

Saw a post on another forum about all the good fighters the UFC has been losing lately. Bader, Circunov, Horiguchi, Krylov, and Larkin.

Lots of talent, not a lot of current starpower. Telling.

Especially in divisions that needs all the talent there is. I've always been a fan of Horiguchi and I thought he fought for the title a little too early and I expected to see him fight for the title again soon

That's a great point I meant to bring up but forgot...Flyweight and light heavyweight aren't exactly weight classes where there is an abundance of talent.

Horiguchi to Rizin official.

The Japanese flyweight contender has signed with Rizin, MMA Fighting has confirmed. Horiguchi, who has won three fights in a row, recently completed his UFC contract and decided to sign with the upstart Japanese promotion after turning down the UFC’s contract extension.

According to sources, Horiguchi will make his Rizin debut against Yuki Motoya on April 16 in Yokohama, Japan. The promotion is expected to announce the flyweight fight in the coming days.

Horiguchi (18-2) leaves the UFC with a 7-1 record inside the Octagon. His lone loss came against flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson at UFC 186 in April 2015. Since then, the 26-year-old scored wins over Chico Camus, Neil Seery and Ali Bagautinov.

New ownership might be in the profit by keeping expenses low school (which could have issues long term).

Horiguchi couldn't have even cost them that much, could he?

Maybe he just wanted to go back to Japan?

Probably both. Wanted to go home unless it's worth staying in the UFC

I don't know the validity of this claim so take it with a grain of salt, but I read on another forum that he was discarded because of his "limited social media presence".

Again, no idea how legit but at the same time...that would seem to jive with WME tbh.

MMAHour listen, GDR on. This is all paraphrased:

Ariel: Did you think you won the fight?
GDR: Absolutely. I dominated the fight. She had a moment or two, but I was dominant otherwise.

*two minutes later*
Ariel asks her about fighting Cyborg next.
GDR: Actually, I believe Holly deserves a rematch.

Ariel calls her out on it a little later.

I'm thinking the opposite. The guy is such a narcissist ****, all of this narrative given to his life/motivation/beliefs/technique is totally made-up after the fact.
