maybe he wants an assistant coaching job with his old jazz buddy.
Pretty sure Malone wants to hunt, fish and relax during his retirement. But he's one of a few guys that could work with KP and add more than Rambis or the useless stiffs on staff.
Malone was an elite basket roller in the pick and roll, his ability to shuck his man and get his shoulder past on the switch was top 5 all time. He was also a great mid-post passer. His conditioning was also unmatched. Lastly he was an elite fast break 4, not sure how much of that is technique or effort but there aren't many 4's that attacked the wings on the break like the Mailman. Also how to cave peoples skulls in with an elbow.
The other ones are
Kevin McHale. An elite individual instructor who essentially tutored KG. KGs signature shake into the lane with the high release point? That was McHale, over and over and over drilling him. McHale is one of the 3 most skilled post players of all time, he didn't have elite strength but he had freakish length and amazing balance on either leg. His shot release, like KGs, and like KPs should be, was unblockable. McHale was a black hole though, his passing left alot to be desired. McHale was also a terror on the glass with an elite offensive rebound rate.
Sheed shares alot with McHale (on the court). Had McHale come along later he probably would have developed range like Sheed. His defensive smarts were amazing. Sheed was impossible to strip by smaller guys on the switch because of the way he used his hips as he accepted the post pass. KP right now is catching too close to the defender instead of creating that X between the smaller guy and the ball. Strength will help, but technique is part of it.
From Dirk I think KP can learn about how to draw fouls out of the mid-post, how not to get stripped. Dirk in the high / mid post basically always keeps the ball high, religiously, he gets a shot off or he gets fouled, period. Prime Dirk was also elite at forcing the switch by slipping the screen and mashing the smaller guy into the free throw line area.
