08 Celts players throwing a celebration for 08 title... Ray Allen not invited

Post#1 » by JulesWinnfield » Mon Mar 20, 2017 6:18 pm

Just like Rajon Rondo used to set up the fast break for the Boston Celtics, he is setting up a vacation with his former Celtics teammates from the 2008 NBA championship team to celebrate the nearing of the 10-year anniversary of their title. This party, however, doesn’t include an invite to ex-Celtics star guard Ray Allen.

“I asked a couple of the guys. I got a no, a no head shake,” said Rondo to The Undefeated when asked why Allen wasn’t invited.

“It will be a long story about that, but it is what it is,” Rondo, who plays for the Chicago Bulls, told The Undefeated. “I don’t know a good analogy to put this in. It just wasn’t the greatest separation. It wasn’t the greatest thing that could’ve happened to us as a team, a bond. We were at war with those guys [Miami]. To go with the enemy, that’s unheard-of in sports. Well, it’s not so unheard of. It’s damn near common now.

“The mindset we had. The guys on our team. You wouldn’t do anything like that. It makes you question that series in the Finals … Who were you for? You didn’t bleed green. People think we had a messed-up relationship. It’s not the greatest. But it’s not just me. I called and reached out to a couple of other vets and asked them what they wanted to do with the situation. They told me to stick with what we got [without Allen].”

One former Celtics player from the 2008 NBA championship team said of Allen’s exclusion from the party: “I mean, Ray left. He left to the enemy.”

Very misleading title. Rajon Rondo isn't the Celtics nor has he been a member of the Celtics for several years now

I understand the hurt feelings. But to me this is stupid a full 5 years later. The Celtics were on their last legs when Allen left, his departure certainly didn't stop Boston from doing anything in 2013. This isn't Durant to Golden State, this is not even 15% of that.

Also something about an overrated turd like Rondo continually basking in this beef with a HOFer like Allen is just off putting. Especially the version of Rondo in 08 that contributed to that team

True. Should have specified Celtic players from the 08 team. Although that was made clear in the very first sentence of the post. Sorry for the 3 seconds of confusion it caused you

This is why they're still salty:

“That was a tough situation because we thought it was betrayal,” Pierce said. “That’s why the whole thing evolved like it did with us not talking to him. Ray didn’t really have the best relationship with Rondo anyway. That was nothing. [Rondo], me and Kevin, he didn’t have any talk with us [before his Miami decision].

I tried to call him and I didn’t get any return calls before he signed with Miami. That was our rival. We were brothers. We came in together. We just wanted a heads-up or a ‘what’s on your mind?’ or something like. Then, all of a sudden, he left. That was the biggest disappointment on my end. Not even getting a callback at that moment.”

The organization doesn't have a reason to be angry with him for leaving after the way they dangled him in trades repeatedly, but if it went down how Pierce says, then the guys in that locker room do. It's not just that he left to go to the "enemy", but not even talking to your teammates about making that decision is pretty bad in my eyes.

I think KG and Rondo are driving the "no" camp. Pierce I think has let it go, but KG seems like the kind of dude who might never forgive and Rondo and Ray always had their own issues. Doubt others have any real animosity towards him, but are just falling in line behind KG.

It's essentially a vacation hosted by Rondo and is totally informal, you don't want any drama. It's petty, but makes sense.

how stupid is this? I can't conceive of being irritated at a fellow player for exercising his free agency rights half a decade later.

Why would you throw a party for a championship when some of those players are still in the league?

Didn't the Celts take ray allens starting job from him and give it to Avery Bradley late that last season? Of course Bradley would get hurt in the playoffs and Ray got his job back

I remember not being one bit surprised that Allen left, and taken aback by how salty Boston was about it given their circumstances

For me, I would have forgiven him by now if he didn't cry to the media to anybody who would listen for like a year and a half. I still love Wes Welker and hope he makes the Patriots' Hall of Fame. Also...Ray was kinda a fraud, considered to be the ultimate professional but whined when he had to come off the bench for Avery Bradley which was the best for the team at the time. He's no JET or Manu when it came to being a good teammate and doing what was best for the team. Had a rather large ego low key...

Bradley was out playing him and the bench needed an extra punch. It made a lot of sense. Ray should not have been offended being a sixth man.

It's easy to say Ray should not have been offended by being a 6th man, but a prideful future HOFer who has started his whole career isn't just going to be robotic about that whole situation, especially backing up a kid. It's true he opted for the bench role in Miami anyway, but it's a lot easier to take that cut in a different situation than the team you had been starting for, not to mention if you're going to come off the bench you may as well do it for a legit contender rather than a team with the arrow pointed squarely downward like the Celts at that time. Also you are backing up a HOFer, not Avery Bradley who was just starting to make even a modest name for himself

It's not hard to understand why Ray went to Miami. It is hard to understand how salty Boston still is about losing an aging player who they had recently demoted on a team who had clearly seen its best days. They act like it's Durant to Golden State

I dont see any problem with that

why would you want to invite a guy who makes you feel uncomfortable? Making all that awkward silence when ray out there hanging out with them? What's funny is that I am sure if ray was invited he would decline the offer himself.

You guys do realize Ray Allen isn't the most congenial guy himself right lol ?

Not saying he deserves to be shut out but he's certainly not the type to even care about it.

Well, Boston isn't salty about it. His teammates and fans are, and they should be, for the way he handled that exist and later leaking all the BS about Rondo being a bad teammate etc.
