Adam Silver Warns Teams Of Resting Players

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Tue Mar 21, 2017 1:29 am

Adam Silver has called the practice of teams resting marquee players "an extremely significant issue for our league" in a memo to league owners Monday.

In the memo, Silver informed teams that the issue will be a prime topic of discussion at the next NBA Board of Governors meeting April 6 in New York and warned of ‎"significant penalties" for teams that don't abide by the league's standing rules for providing ‎"notice to the league office, their opponent, and the media immediately upon a determination that a player will not participate in a game due to rest.

Silver said that it is unacceptable for owners to be uninvolved or defer decision-making on this topic to others in their organizations.

On Monday, ESPN released a statement about the teams resting their star players during nationally televised games.

"As always, our aim is to serve NBA fans with the best matchups involving the league's top stars and we share the fans' disappointment. We understand this is a complex issue and we're working closely with the NBA to best address it going forward from a media partnership standpoint, " the statement said.

This is stupid.

All teams are going to do is pretend the players have sprained ankles or sore achilles or whatever.

He should be happy teams are being transparent with this and anything to fight against it will totally fail.

Yeah, because it's totally fair that the players and teams get their $ while fans are hosed of the product they actually pay for.
The fans are speaking out by not watching the games on TV and/or attending the game... which is why ESPN is clearly being hurt (ratings!). If ESPN is hurt, the NBA is hurt - simple as that.

Teams can play whatever card they want, if the NBA doesn't want healthy players sitting out, they won't sit out. Simple as that.
At the end of the day, every owner and the league as a whole are in the business of making money - not winning championships. As soon as ESPN or ABC or whoever says they're cutting deal $ because of this BS, NBA ain't going to have none of it.

It's his fault. Start the season two weeks earlier and stop playing back to backs.

TNT/ESPN will get two more weeks of coverage, players will get more rest, the fans will get better games, and everyone makes more money.

i have a feeling the coaches will play the stars for one quarter and let them sit the rest of the game as a workaround to circumvent any punishment.

You can't really make a rule against it. Otherwise coaches will just say the players have minor injuries that could get worse if not rested. The NBA isn't going to force teams to play injured players, are they? Granted teams could do a better job resting players one at a time instead of in bunches, but their job as a coach is to win titles. They could give a **** less about TV ratings. They see it as giving their team a better shot at a deep playoff run, which makes much more money for the franchise that pays them. Forget BSPN and the league. They will be fine.

Besides, what makes the NBA more money in the long run? Lebron & Curry playing in every back to back of the year and breaking down in the finals, or Lebron & Curry resting some games and being at their best in the finals? I know what I, as a fan, would rather see.

If some chump bought an NBA ticket to see one single player, and the player doesn't play, it's his own fault. The ticket clearly says you are paying to watch 2 teams compete, not the Lebron James / Steph Curry tour. He's not a real fan in the first place. You should be happy to be part of this team's historical playoff run, that involves resting their stars for a few games.

yea mr. silver, keep in mind, lebron has in the last 6 nba finals. if lebron or if cavs management wants him to rest, you are going to say no he cant? you want your biggest asset be injuried or fatigued for the playoffs because you dont let him rest for game 62 or the regular season? i m sorry, as crappy as it is for fans for that 1 game that they miss, it's that much worse if they arent playing to their full potential for the playoffs.

big picture man.. if fans dont get that aspect of nba, they should just stick to ufc where they fight 2x/yr max.

People are missing the point. This practice fundamentally undermines the league's credibility. Not to mention the fact, that TV Deals are negotiated with the belief that star plays will be playing. TV Deals are based on projected viewership. If stars are not playing, viewership goes down. Will the league be giving back money to the TV Companies. Will teams be refunding fans for games where players are healthy scratches, especially if they announce at the last minute? It is not enough for teams to say "sorry." This is a massive black eye on the league and it needs to be addressed.

So is this an admission from Silver that the NBA is a star driven league? Refs, take note if you haven't gotten the memo...

Bingo. Take Lebron or Steph Curry out of the picture, and nobody even watches the finals. Imagine Lebron plays all 82 games and then gets knocked out of round 1 or 2 due to fatigue or injury. Ratings would instantly tank. Thinking of ratings and revenue for a few regular season games, without considering the potential gains or losses for the NBA finals is incredibly shortsighted. Silver HAS to know this, is it all just an act to pretend he cares about the fans?

The solution is easy. Stop scheduling marquis matchups in back to backs.

Should have clamped down back when the Spurs started this stuff a few years ago.

Both Cleveland and GS both sat players intentionally on nationally televised games. The players don't give a rat's ass but that television money is huge reason why their contracts have gone up.

I don't think a guy should be forced to play if he's injured or ill, but what's taken place over the last few weeks has been ridiculous. They'll play their guys versus lesser teams on a wednesday night and then all of a sudden feel the need to rest players versus legit competition on a marquee game of the week. I understand that the season is a marathon not a sprint but at some point the league has got to remember that catering to fans comes first and foremost.

But I do think that they need to cut down the schedule from 82 games and eliminate back to backs.

NBA has some major issues to deal with and fix.

Stars being rested is certainly one of them. If Gold State visited my city(rested all their star players ) and I paid big money months ago to secure tickets I would absolutely sue the nba to get my ticket money back.

At the very least the NBA needs to give the fans back their money when teams rest their stars.

Something has to be done about the taking also. You cant have 9-10 organizations intentionally trying to lose. The Knicks,Sixers,Orlando,Sac,Lakers,Phoenix they are all a disgrace to the nba and competitive sports.

They need to go to 1 ping pong ball per nba team. Enough of the tanking.

Start the season 2 Weeks earlier, to limit the back-to-backs.

Schedule as many back-to-backs as home games, so there is no travel for the team on the back-to-back.

or have back-to-back on the road against LAL/LAC, NYK/BRK, any 2 cities that are fairly close.

Cut down preseason even further (games that legitimately don't matter), and get rid of back to backs, period.

If you are going to put 16 out of 30 teams in the playoffs and have a bunch of back to back games, then teams are going to sit players. For the top teams the 82 game regular season is just a grind that matters little because pretty much every team with a winning record will make the playoffs. If you cut the playoff teams down to 8, then fewer teams will be able to sit players during the regular season.
