Rush is shooting 3's at over 38% this year. That being said, those are all wide open attempts and his 2pt % is :-?

I hope nobody is expecting a team changer out of Casspi, but I do think he could be a nice complement to what we have now and probably be an upgrade over Rush headed into next year. That's not necessarily a super high bar to clear. Competent 3pt shooter, a little more rebounding and fewer blown lay-ups than Rush.

Best case scenario, he fits nicely here, uses the end of the season to familiarize himself with Thibs' system and comes back next year as the player some of us hoped Brandon Rush could be this year. Just a steady, competent player off the bench that allows some positional flexibility in the line-up.
Thriving on mediocrity since '89.

You do know Casspi isn't particularly good?

Yesterday he was pretty terrible, couldn't dribble the basketball without getting it stripped.

I mean Casspi's last season was a better season than any season of Rush's career, while this season was just plain weird for him and I wouldn't judge him based on it. Let's give him a bit larger sample size than his 1st game here, shall we?

3/20/17 — Signed Omri Casspi for the rest of the season at an estimated $185,710.

If you're interested, a 10-day contract is $57,600.

If you're a real cap nerd like me, this $185,710 cuts into the money we are under the salary floor, so the current players don't get quite as big a bonus. The $185,710 is "free" because this would have been money he would have had to pay anyway, plus this saves Glen Taylor a little more money, because salary floor is based on the final salary, not the average salary. He only paid Casspi right at the end.

Incidentally, this was probably a mistake for the Pelicans. When Casspi got injured, they cut him because they felt the roster space would be more valuable. The free agents they signed have done nothing. Instead, they should have kept Casspi, so they would have his Bird Rights. NOP will be desperate to win next year, to convince Boogie to stick around when his deal comes up in two years. To protect themselves if they have to maximize his trade valuable, they need to be a playoff team before the trade deadline next February. Anthony Davis and Demarcus Cousins is a great start, but they have a very talent-starved team. Even if they are able to keep Jrue Holiday, he will use up their cap space on a giant deal. Casspi would have been a key piece they could have controlled with Bird rights.

NOP's loss is MIN's gain. He's not awful as a 3-and-d wing. Neither are excellent, but he's an ok three point shooter, and he'll rush out to defend the three point shot. i like what Bjelica was becoming at the end of the season, and I put Casspi in that same pod of players. if we are unable to get a starting 3 and 4 with our cap space in free agency or trade this summer, i would not mind having both Bjelly and Omri on this team next year. I imagine he signed here now to get minutes to audition for that next contract, and Thibs might be the one that gives it to him.

Can you be a "3-and-d" wing when you move like you're running in thigh-deep water?
