hi

in my 4 years working i've never had a peer in my career in my department/group (start-up/small company life). chemist at my current company (he's been there 5+ years) is the closest I've ever had and he put in over a months notice a few weeks back and is moving to Cali (i'm an engineer, not a chemist). Long story short, I've interviewed my new boss TWICE, but interviewing the replacement for this coworker has been the toughest/most nervous I've been as an interviewer out of at least 20-30 interviews in the past two years.

I've only had to interview people who were taking my old job when I left. It wasn't too hard.

I only have to interview waiters and it kills me every time they come with their boyfriend/girlfriend. They stay there like they're bodyguards.

Yeah, no joke, last year I had this dude (age 27) for an interview and he came with his wife. His CV looked more than decent for the job, but the one thing that was kinda weird it was the fact that he was jobless for 1.5 year, exactly since he got married. From the CV I was ready to hire him because at the time I was kinda desperate, but then I sat down with them and oh boy...she asked all the freaking questions, (except for when he asked me if it's okay if his wife waits for him in the restaurant for 2 hours so they can go home together after his shift ends) seriously, all of them, at one point making me believe that she is the one interviewing for the job. She even asked if the people working in the kitchen are men or women. Safe to say, I didn't hire him because I'm pretty sure the wife was going to be a pain in the ass, but at least I found out why he didn't get a job after he got married.

Its kind of hard to find the perfect balance between finding someone competent enough that your boss won't be e-mailing you before every deadline asking for help and not finding someone who's so good that you might not stop yourself from asking why they are applying for this job.
