Just finished my first listen, it's good. However with that being said there's a lot of digesting to do and it should be interesting to listen to backwards to see how that flows. Not many rappers that you really have to do that with now a days, so that will be fun. However I agree with some in here, much more of a fan of Kendrick's earlier work. I always wanted him and MC eiht to do an album, M.A.A.D. City offered so much potential there. Hell I'll even settle for a Black Hippy album... yeah right.

4-5 tracks in had me falling asleep. Switched it off because wasnt keeping my attention. Imma give it another try, but from what I have heard...nothing that spectacular.

Real talk right here man, thanks for that. A little story I'd like to share if you don't mind, because you touched on some feels tonight:

First time I heard Kendrick was by luck, in "Swimming Pools" (Drank) I was having issues in my personal life, lost my job, started drinking heavily, and one night while sitting in my living room, lights out, drinking a nasty 4Loko (was broke and took whatever I got my hands on) I heard this song...and paid attention to his words...I thought ****..it's like he's talking about me!!!! And that feeling came back...to actually listen to the lyrics, hit rewind and break down the bars, understand the message of the rapper and relate it to your own situation.....and isn't that the essence of rap? When I was a kid I was chastised for listening to Tupac....people made fun of me, said I was trying to be gangsta, thug, wannabe, what do I know about the struggle as an Indian kid? Well, you take those words and you put them in your own story, your own plight, your own life, and you relate, and I had not done that on a new song/artist in a long time until I heard KDot's Drank. I started asking around, and got a hold of some good names, and have started to pay attention to the message again, instead of just listening to hip-hop during party time.

To the people who say they can't listen to him because of his weak beats, Kendrick and other guys like J.Cole, make you pay attention, and even care for and relate to the words they are saying, not just the synthesized beat that the sound engineer created. They can rap their song a Capella, but the meat and potatoes is still there...can a trapp beat rapper say the same thing? To an outside the culture person like me, if I want to listen to rap...I need to hear a message, otherwise there are plenty of other songs in other genres that have catchy tunes and more sensible lyrics to enjoy.

Sure, his beats might not be on point for some....but then you're missing the point....might as well put on some Panda :lol:

I gotta say though, it was so much easier to get good hip-hop back in the day. You stopped by Jamaica Ave, popped into one of those CD/mixtape/barbershop/hat stores, a hip hop head would give you suggestions and for 5 bucks you had some new music. Now you gotta search and search and then listen until you find something good. I still remember the guys face who sold me 50's first "album" and what he said....."you gon' like dis **** homie...gon' make you rob somebody...don't let pops listen to it doe, ya heard?" Dude looked like Method Man lol. Those were the days.......... oops, here I go again :lol:

I'm more of a beat guy nowadays then lyrics which is why gkmc is by far my favorite Kendrick album

As far as his lyrics he does say some meaningful stuff but let's be honest he also raps a lot of nonsensical gibberish at times trying to show off his prowess

uh, not in this album, not in TPAB, not in GKMC. Kendrick doesn't waste words.

Idk about age, I'm 30 and know a bunch of heads my age and older that love the album. One string I do notice as that writers and former writers, especially those who wrote music gel well with what Kendrick does on this album fairly consistently. But my circle likes this type of hip hop in general so that could be a bubble.

It has nothing to do with age, it has everything to do with a get off my lawn perspective. I know 23 year old's that hate Kendrick because he's not Pun, Ghost, Chef, Biggie, etc.There's a demographic of HHH's that won't respect present day hip-hop because of the few bad eggs and the lack of nostalgia.

To be honest, I've never seen a kid under say.. 18 into Kendrick. That generation is into Yachty/Uzi. The 23-35 demographic is Kendrick's core fan base.

DNA is my fav so far. this probably even surpass GKMC as all time fav album. im just diggin kendrick. lyrics, concepts, flow, voice i like evrything about him

people in here saying Kendicks albums are subpar... holy moly

I'm not coming for Drake. I have no issue with Drake. Saying Kendrick is better at rapping than Drake is like saying water is wet. Not an insult, just an observation.

Just realized the "album" I was listening to on youtube wasn't "damn" listened to "Damn" Today, pretty solid album . I liked it. Maybe being slightly overhyped still, but that's because the quality of music has really gone down the drain .

i like what ebro said. Drake generates more hits and radio singles but Kenrick is clearly the better rapper. I like Drake in some tracks tho, cant deny his sense for creating a good song.

Plus the thing with Kendrick is, hes one of the few with an artistic claim. he is definately tryna tell something with his music. Sure, some stuff is probably overthought but that happens with inspiring people, their stuff gets overthought
