Clippers Remain Committed To Re-Signing Blake Griffin

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Apr 27, 2017 11:22 pm

Blake Griffin will be a free agent for the first time this offseason and the Los Angeles Clippers want to re-sign him. The Clippers will also contend with the free agencies of Chris Paul and J.J. Redick.

Griffin is out for the playoffs with a toe injury.

"Griffin is still a significant part of the Clippers' future. Management remains committed to signing him to a long-term deal this summer, league sources tell me.

"In a lot of ways, Griffin has been most loyal to the Clippers' brand. He has never had wanderlust, never floated ideas about leaving town. Truth be told, he's accommodated Paul in every way. Broadened his own game, grown as a leader and taken a lot of unfair finger pointing and blame once the All-Star point guard became the face of the franchise."

Wojnarowski also said "it's hard to imagine a split with Griffin."

From a marketing standpoint, they need Griffin. He's the face of the franchise and he makes the Clippers relevant even if they never contend for a championship.

You have to retain him as you can't replace him

makes sense to sign him even if you don't want to keep him.

Giving Grffin a 5-year max this summer would bury the Clippers for years to come in the same manner in which the Kobe contract killed the Lakers.

It's sad to see that LAC has reconstructed the FO to suit Doc with promoting Lawrence Frank.

Bringing back Blake sets the team back a step IMO. They need a stretch 4 who can step outside and create space.

Griff has worked on his jumper but it is still average at best and he fails to work his man down in the post on a consistent basis. Too many moves and less attacking.

Bring back BG and I foresee another treadmill season- unless he vastly improves.

Why would you let a 28 year old star, even with all the injuries go away? Do you really think having Blake is a bigger step back than having nothing? It's really nonsense. I can envision some sign and trade scenarions with Blake in the summer, but if your team leader is 32, letting the second best player on the team leave for a bag of chips is nuts.

In case CP3 leaves, well that's a different story...

I agree hes a "Star" no doubt- not a Superstar by any means. He gives them value beyond the court. They take a step back because he does not take them over the bump. How many years have we seen them in the WCF? They have failed to add any talent to the core (besides Speights and Crawford- who isn't going to give you much in the future)- not to mention resigning A.Rivers where it could have gone towards another scoring Guard or Forward.

Bringing back Blake means once again they will not have cap space to sign any key components thus being a treadmill team. Any team would benefit from Blake but what has he done to get them over the hump?

The alternative to not signing Blake and CP3 for the Clips is being god awful immediately. They have zero good young prospects and don't even have their First round pick this summer. These contracts might eventually turn bad but having them still allows them to trade both players to help speed up the rebuilding.

Nurse is below average at best.
Masai is overrated.
