The Cleveland Indians tried to extend the contract of shortstop Francisco Lindor before Opening Day, but not even dangling what one source said was a package around $100 million did the trick.

The Chicago Cubs made runs at extending several of their young players this winter, including third baseman Kris Bryant, but according to one source, every one of those efforts “got nowhere.”

We are living in an age of the greatest 25-and-under slugging stars in the free agent era. Here’s the catch for the clubs: When so many players are this good and this young, we are looking at a new paradigm in placing a value on that talent. For instance, what is the value right now of one free agent year of Bryant in 2022? That’s why the Indians, the Cubs and other clubs with elite young players have been unable to buy out potential free agent years.

David Meter, the agent for Lindor, said about the Indians’ failed attempt at an extension, “It’s just one of those things we’ll look at on a year-by-year basis. I don’t think it’s very productive to draw a line in the sand.”

Around 80. It actually feels like it should be higher than that.

How many more games do they play against the Reds?

Well, it certainly is nice that the final two picks of my fantasy baseball draft were Eric Thames and Greg Holland.

Anthony Rendon's single-game performance today would leave him tied for 3rd on the Jays in HRs and RBIs. Came into the game with only 2 XBHs all year, both doubles...went 6-6 with 3 HRs and a double. Tripled his seasonal RBI total. Quite a way to turn it around.

Machado is a little whiny b*****. I mean he plays for a team that's pitchers keep doing exactly what was done to him by Sale.

Machado's team is not much better and he has a history himself of not being such a great person, but his rant was 100% correct in thsi case. It's ridiculous that MLB allows this to go on. Instead of giving warnings for intentional beanballs, why not an automatic ejection and suspension? It makes no sense. 20 games for a starting pitcher, 15 games for a reliever. Make it a real suspension. They are openly encouraging this kind of stuff by issuing a handful of warnings and only suspending players who intentionally throw at batters if the ball ends up above the waist. As a fan, I don't want to see it, and I don't care if the players want to police themselves. I don't want to see them all out there acting like babies throwing the ball at each other because they're upset.

Gausman gets ejected after hitting Bogaerts with a 77 MPH curveball.

Still does not compare to that time Alfredo Simon hit a Blue Jay at ~50 MPH just because he had no other options than to lob a baseball.

That's the worst ejection I've ever seen. Holbrook shouldn't be umping MLB games if he actually thinks Gausman was throwing at the batter.

Meh. It was a dumb ejection and obviously wasn't trying to hit the guy, but there's a certain sense of schadenfreude seeing them freak out. They had their chance to play properly but the grownups had to put them on time-out because they couldn't control their emotions. The whole thing is absurd. This is the way MLB must want it to happen though, rather than offering real deterrence to beanball wars.

The Orioles have spent years throwing baseballs at Jose, so **** them.
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Even if he was throwing at him, it's infuriating in that the Red Sox pitcher throws at Machado and it's an automatic warning to both clubs, now if Baltimore throws at a guy, their team is at a disadvantage with a pitcher tossed and Boston gets away with it. Then next game a curve ball that hits the guy leads to an automatic ejection.

MLB needs to change the rule that it's not simply a warning, if the Umpire feels you threw at a guy like the Machado one game before, automatic ejection for the pitcher and not warnings to both teams.

Oooh, I read someone comparing Hiraldo to the dearly-departed Franklin Barreto a while back. Would be a nice addition.

On the same night the Jays offense can't hit a lick, Ben Revere hits a home run in O.Co of all places. Life sure is weird sometimes.

This is random.
This is a big day for Alex Rodriguez. He’s doing color commentary on an MLB game for the first time ever, a big step in his budding broadcasting career. To mark the occasion, @MLBONFOX tweeted a photo of A-Rod preparing for the game in the booth. Then they deleted the tweet. Why? Because look at what’s in his notes.

Child:

• Birth control

• Baby

• Pull out stuff

It’s crazy that the only notebook A-Rod had in his house was the one from junior high sex ed.
