With Giannis, there were teams around us who wanted him. Donnie Nelson was vetoed. Ferry could have moved up but was greedy. Still a great pick, but not way out ahead of the curve in the same way.
I mentioned the last draft as potentially being the best part of Hammond's tenure. Obvious response I received was re Giannis, but he had an amazingly good haul out of a thin (at this stage) class.
It's plausible he got two of the top 5 guys in this class. That's remarkable regardless of the strength of the class, although of course it's a bit more doable if the top shelf is ****.
Here's what we have with Hammond, though: his superstar emerges, he plucks 4 role players in one summer, his prize FA from the previous summer bounces back, and we win 43 games and go out in the first round. That's a lot that went right just to get to 43. I know: Middleton. And I know I'm preaching to the choir. But I'm worried they think this roster is where it needs to be.
