Joe Williams - RB - 49ers

49ers signed fourth-round RB Joe Williams to a four-year contract.

Essentially handpicked by new coach Kyle Shanahan, Williams arrives in the Bay as a 4.41 speedster behind contract-year incumbent starter Carlos Hyde, about whom the 49ers' new regime has had publicly mixed feelings. Williams is an intriguing Dynasty pick with a real chance to contribute in re-draft leagues, as well. Shanahan may envision Williams as his new Tevin Coleman.

Greatest RB of the last couple years Mike Davis has been released.

You'll always be better than Hyde in my book.

Three head coaches buried this guy on the depth chart behind a bunch of scrubs and that included RB coach Tom Rathman so I would say there were issues with Mike Davis

I was never fond of that pick.

Lombardi throwing some shade on the 49ers draft.

Says Foster will likely need surgery and Bethard will have to pan out to make it such a great draft.

Says he likes Williams as the one-cut back that Shanahan favors.

If Thomas and Foster pan out, this is a great draft. Everything else is gravy at that point. Beathards should develop at least into a solid backup, but that's really all you're expecting from a QB taken with a third-round comp pick. Fans - and apparently guys like Lombardi - tend to have unrealistic expectations for drafts. Adding two solid starters makes for a pretty decent draft. It's incredibly rare to have a draft with multiple pro bowlers.

Ha! That makes me miss Deep and our ongoing squabble about the Niners' "subpar" 2007 draft.

Foster will have to answer shoulder questions on field

Bethard doesn't have to pan out for it to be a great draft. If you land 3 or 4 starters and it doesn't matter who it is you had a great draft. I mean you're going to tell me if Thomas and Foster are all-pros, Williams is 1000+ yard rusher, and Witherspoon is a quality starter that wouldn't be a great draft?

And as I said in the Foster thread I don't care if Foster needs surgery and misses 2017 if he's an all-pro for the next 9 years. Now if the shoulder is a permanent issue that's one thing but you don't draft a guy for his rookie season but what he'll do for you over the course of years.

Aaron Lynch - DL - 49ers

According to the Santa Rosa Press Democrat's Grant Cohn, 49ers pass rusher Aaron Lynch reported to the team "a cool 20 pounds overweight."

Cohn named Lynch as the likeliest Trent Baalke-era holdover to get cut this offseason, just ahead of Vance McDonald, whom the new regime is known to have dangled in draft-weekend trade talks. Lynch missed four games to a substance abuse suspension last season, then battled a high ankle sprain for most of the year. Lynch has been an enigmatic underachiever since college.

We cut KD Cannon. Don't know why yet. Must have broken a rule.

Was the definition of a priority FA as evidenced by his $50K signing bonus.......if you're somebody that's casual that thinks, "Ah, he was an UDFA. No big deal."

Saw that news. There's got to be a reason for it. Wonder what he did? He was undoubtedly one of the top UDFAs, and SI.com just rated him as our best late-round/UDFA addition. Surprising to see him gone so soon.

The ONLY other thing I can think of for such a quick release OTHER than performance or an infraction of some sort would be if the kid had a change of heart and/or something came up with his family and out of good faith/gesture the 49ers obliged to let him go somewhere else. The 49ers sort of did this when they signed LeGarrette Blount as a priority UDFA but what made that situation a little easier was Blount had not yet signed the contract.

Anyway, it's likely performance/attitude/decision-making/rule based especially if you factor in the odds with his background. I'm just pointing out the ONLY other thing that I think it could be if it's not that.

Well, it looks like maybe he was juicing in college & his rookie season because his violation was the substance-abuse policy, and he's sucked ever since getting off suspension.

He's making himself much cheaper to re-sign, but at this point, they may just part ways after this season.

KD Cannon - WR - Free Agent

49ers waived WR KD Cannon.

The Niners are eating a $45K signing bonus they gave Cannon nine days ago. A big-name undrafted free agent out of Baylor, Cannon was cut immediately after rookie minicamp. Assuming he is healthy and not dealing with an off-field issue, we suspect Cannon will be claimed off waivers. A one-trick speedster, Cannon has drawn comparisons to Chargers WR Travis Benjamin.
