They weren't going to be the worst team in baseball all season, that's for sure.

They also have their work cut out for them playing in the AL East. Still need to grind out wins till their tops bats come back along with healthy starting pitching.

Smoak got hurt?

I think he's referring to Goins?

Morales back in the lineup today batting fourth.

Here's a question: When Tulo, Donaldson, Happ and Sanchez return, how does the roster shake out? (Martin is an easy one, just send one of the BUF catchers back to BUF). With Tulo and Donaldson back, we would end up with two reserve infielders in Barney and Goins. (Let's say Pearce is an outfielder for purposes of this exercise). There is no obvious outfielder to drop, can't drop Carrera, Pillar, won't drop Bautista. To keep both Barney and Goins, one answer might be reducing the bullpen, so long as Happ, Sanchez and Liriano are healthy so Biagini can return to the pen. Bolsinger would then return to BUF along with one of the BUF relievers, but there would have to be one more reliever sent out. Chris Smith has done a nice job as the eighth inning guy, and he and Howell could become the 7th inning tandem. So either one of Barnes/Tapera (both of whom are pitching decently) or Grilli, who is not pitching all that well and whose role seems to have been usurped by Smith/Biagini seem like candidates.

Might be worth seeing whether someone still wants to trade for Goins. That way, we can end our time with him on a high note, with his .225/.292/.375 slash line ringing in our ears, rather than having it sour once he goes back to being doubly awful.

When looking at Pillar's stats on fangraphs this year, I see nothing indicating it's a fluke. He's just swinging at more strikes and less balls.

The guy is so cheap though. I'd rather see us move Tulo, if that's even possible. His bat is in decline and he seems to be getting slower. We may have already reached a point where Goins has surpassed him defensively.

There's no question that an aging Tulo can still out-hit Goins, but I don't think it's worth an extra $18 million/year for the .240-.260 average that Tulo has been giving us.

Maile seems like a decent defensive catcher. Can't hit a lick, but that's another problem in and of itself.

I remember the days when Dickey was criticized because it meant we had to keep Thole on the roster.

Seems like the Royals' winneryness hasn't been srubbed off of Morales yet.

Can't really send him out there at 100 pitches two starts after leaving a game with arm soreness.
