Is that possible? yes
Riley should offer McRoberts a two year deal by using the room exception. By that, McRoberts will not lose his money and the Heat gains additional cap space.
Great ... an extra year of not being able to trade him for a pack of cigarettes.
I believe Miami will not mind the extra year if the pay is almost the same (2 yrs @ $7.5m maybe) and especially
IF they can use the cap space to signed a free agent that can make a difference.
I don't agree with that. But more importantly it doesn't make any sense for McRoberts. Even at the NBA minimum next season he stands to earn:
$6,021,175 ... this season
+$2,300,000 ... next season NBA minimum for a 10+ year veteran
----------------
$8,321,175 ... over the next 2 years
So unless he feels that he can't even land a vet minimum deal next season, we'd have to offer him at least ~ $4,000,000 million this season + $4,320,000 next season ... and fully guarantee it. I'm not sure it's worth the trouble just to open up $2 million in cap room. May as well waive and stretch him and open up $4 million.
