Arik Armstead - DL - 49ers

The 49ers are trying third-year DE Arik Armstead at their "Leo" weak-side pass-rusher position.

It's the position manned by Cliff Avril on the Seahawks, whose defense the 49ers are patterning theirs after. Armstead is an odd fit at 6-foot-7, 292, but new DC Robert Saleh believes he's athletic enough to man the premier pass-rush position in San Francisco's scheme. "He moves well. The concern was that he’s so big and he doesn’t exactly fit the prototype, but he’s so athletic," said Saleh. "He’s so long and he’s got a good first step." Armstead has 4.5 sacks through two seasons.

Not a huge fan of that signing - admittedly I have no idea what kind of money is involved. Dumervil is a stop-gap. I'd rather just let the young guys duke it out and keep an additional developmental player than bring in a 33-year-old on a team that is probably going to struggle anyway.

I'm ok with the signing, brings another vet with hopefully a possible pass rush spark.

I feel it's a solid signing.

Limit his snaps and make him a pass rush specialist and he should still have a few years of productivity in the tank. Freeney is older and been able to be productive so I think Dumervil can be as well if handled right.

He'll also provide some veteran leadership to a group that's pretty young and you need a few guys like that on a rebuilding team.

Greg Cosell Shares Early Assessment of John Lynch, Kyle Shanahan

Don't expect the usual in-depth stuff you usually get from Cosell.

I've been reading a bit about Lorenzo Jerome lately, and saw this article on the webzone:

http://www.49erswebzone.com/commentary/1689-why-49ers-fans-should-excited-about-lorenzo-jerome/

I'd love to see Jerome succeed. And I completely agree that a 4.7 40 is not a death knell for a safety. The problem, as I see it, is that Jerome's 4.7 40 was arguably his best combine measurement. At least that was in the ballpark of other guys at the position. But his three-cone and short shuttle were AWFUL, both dead last in the DB class, and not even close to other legitimate prospects (his three-cone was 0.5 seconds behind the next-worst guy; even with a dramatic improvement at his pro day, his time would still have been the worst among the DB group). And oddly, he didn't do the jumps at either the combine or his pro day. His body looks a little sloppy for a safety, so it's possible we'll see improvement now that he's in an NFL program, but while athleticism isn't the be-all, end-all, there is such a thing as not being athletic enough to play in the league. I'm worried Jerome may fall into that category.

Inexplicably, NFL.com's draft video for him says his combine performance was neither stellar nor poor. If that wasn't a poor performance, I don't know what is.

It's true this was not in depth, but his past analysis of Shanahan, particularly his stuff about the Super Bowl, has been pretty in depth.

Cosell goes in depth regarding play on the field and film study. He evaluates team and individual play. Not sure he would normally go in depth about the moves a GM makes or how they are performing in the off season

Was Staley around when we had Mike Martz as an OC? Chip Kelly, from what I heard / read about him, is a sharp man too?

Great reports on Kittle recently. Looks like he's making a legit bid to be the starter.

While I expect nothing but good reports from camp this early, its nice and comforting to say the least.

I hope our defense truly regains its prior form.
