Here's an article from M. McNammara on Bourbon Street Shots, presenting some great options for if Holiday signs elsewhere:

Pels are in bind if he leaves. The timing thing is crucial.

Plan B (or A)

1) Convince Milos Teodosic or Thomas Heurtel to sign.
2) Sign and trade Holiday for Carmelo Anthony (convincing Anthony)
3) Hire Ettore Messina
4) Sign Anthony Randolph and Tyler Honeycutt

Teodosic or Heurtel/Dinwiddie/Jerrells
Moore/Crawford
Anthony/Hill/Honeycutt
Davis/Randolph
Cousins/Diallo/Christmas

Great for marketing.
High scoring.

Plan C (A)

Heurtel/Jerrells/Dinwiddie
Moore/Jordan/Harris or the 40th Pick (Josh Hart)
Hill/Pondexter/Honeycutt
Davis/Diallo/Brown
Cousins/Randolph/Asik

No idea what to do with Jrue.

I'd probably retain him to be on the safe side and then trade him at the deadline if he's flopping.

NFL - Panthers
MLB - Braves
NHL - Ducks, Hurricanes
NCAAB - Tarheels, Wolverines, CHA 49ers
NCAAF - Tarheels, Wolverines, CHA 49ers

Yeah, I think it's smart to definitely keep him.

Keeping Holiday is smart.
Not wise to go over18 million a year to keep the 3rd best player on the team.

I think it's tougher to lose an asset for nothing than to overpay, particularly if you are going to be over the cap anyway. If they pay him a little less, does that give them much cap space to sign someone? It's very hard to sign FA's that are difference makers anyway. Even a bigger contract is probably tradeable if need be. They need continuity to try and keep Cousins.

Demps was scouting Thomas Heurtel in Istanbul last weekend.

He'll be watching Anthony Randolph later in this week.
At least he's looking in the right places.

Turn Ajinca into a first round pick and draft Sindarius Thorwell

Sign Epke Udoh to replace Ajinca.
Sign Derrick Brown to replace Cunningham

Heurtel, Ragland or Jerrells, and Frazier can hold down the point for now.

Heurtel/Ragland/Frazier
Thornwell/Moore/Crawford
Randolph/Hill
Davis/Diallo
Cousins/Udoh

When your bigs can pass, other players can dominate the post at times: see Randolph and Thornwell
Beat teams down with defense and dominate the paint.

Or

Keep Ajinca and sign Darius Miller

Heurtel/Ragland/Frazier
Miller/Moore/Crawford
Randolph/Hill/Pondexter
Davis/Diallo
Cousins/Ajinca

Darius Miller

OK, so, out with a more ambitious plan. Some might call it a stretch :)

1) Trade: Asik, 2017 2nd round (#40), 2018 2nd round for B. Knight (Suns)

- had a terrible season, but take chance on a guy for cheap hoping to return to his Bucks form as he regains starter spot; should be good fit "on paper" and situation is right for him to produce.
Suns get shorter and cheaper deal and two 2nd rounders as compensation for a guy they were desperate to dump this deadline.

2) Trade: Moore, Frazier, Pondexter, Diallo, 2018 1st (unprotected) for Chandler, Barton (Nuggets)

- Barton already said he won't resign in Denver, and Chandler is also mulling his way out. Nuggets get one 1 st rounder, talent that should fit very well with Jokic (Diallo) and two guys who can step right up and provide veteran stability and tutorship in young backcourt (and better performance than J. Nelson); Pelicans solve their present and future wing woes.

3) Draft: buy picks #53, 55, 56 (Boston x2, Jazz) and take F. Mason, Iwundu, C. Oliver

4) FA: CJ Miles/Holiday/McLemore on MLE; re-sign Holiday

Final roster:

Knight-Holiday-Barton-Davis-Cousins
Crawford-CJ Miles-Chandler-Hill-Ajinca
Mason-Iwundu-Oliver

Sob deeply.

I don't even know what we can do. We've got two star players and holes everywhere else with not a lot of assets to fill them.

Perhaps the best move to make is to be patient.
Use this year to build an identity around the talent they have.

Set a goal of being 3rd or 4th seed in the conference.

Keep cap flexibility
Find role players that can shoot, make others better with the pass, and will compete on defense.

Ajinca is the only asset that might bring a first rounder or a high second.

I don't think re-signing Holiday is the right move.
Saving that money for a dynamic two way SG/SF is the play.

In the mean time (2017-2018)

If not a 1st round draft pick, perhaps Ajinca can be traded for Will Barton (Shooting, Defense, Athleticism) and a 2nd round pick.

Sign a stretch four.
