Make-or-Break Season for Puig for Real This Time?

Post#103 » by Ranma » Sun Dec 18, 2016 8:49 am

It seems like we say this every year with Yasiel Puig, but this could finally be the season that makes or breaks his time with the Dodgers. However, the organization seems quite open to moving him despite the lack of right-handed power bats on the roster. He's certainly used up all of his chances at redemption, but I'm still opposed to the notion of trading him for Ryan Braun.

Dave Roberts mentioned how he's talked with Yasiel and expressed the organization's continued wishes that he slim down in order to take advantage of his athleticism. He seems open to doing so but he committed to doing that last offseason in even showcasing a more svelte figure before bulking up again during the season. Roberts acknowledged that Puig likes to eat good Cuban food and seems to justify adding more weight to build up his power, but Roberts countered that he already has plenty of natural power and needs to maintain his playing weight in order to maximize his athletic talents.

I have to say that I wholeheartedly agree with Roberts and the Dodgers. Puig is no longer afforded the benefit of the doubt from me and I honestly can't see him keeping his slim figure for the whole season even if he gets in shape again by this spring. Puig's problem is that he is content on relying on his natural abilities to get him by. He's more concerned with having fun and being comfortable in playing the game in a way that fits his lifestyle, which will eventually have him evolve into a Juan Uribe body-wise.

Puig doesn't really priortize being a great baseball player and, because of that, he is not really a long-term solution for the Dodgers. I've resigned myself to moving on from him in a season or two but am inclined to stick with him for now given the lack of available options and the trade cost of pursuing another option in RF.

Having said that, I'm not particularly sold on any of our internal prospects for taking over the position and that includes Alex Verdugo, whom I view more as trade bait. Trayce Thompson is probably our best option in RF after Puig while Scott Van Slyke is more of a LFer. However, 2016 4th-round pick D.J. Peters is currently my favorite long-term option for the position.

If he means that in terms of being willing to work for it, fine.
If he means that in terms of he deserves it, then trade him like I said to start the offseason.

I actually have high hopes for Puig this season. given 400 at bat this season, I think .290/.340/.480 with 25HRs is what I am hoping to see Puig do.
ehhhhh f it.

I've gone back and forth on Puig and you can tell that if you read the thread.

At this point, the team has invested too much into him and he's fit very well into his role here for us to deal him just to deal him. Of course, if there is something bigger at play ala bringing in Trout or Machado, fine. But at this point, I'm not into the idea of just trading Puig to get rid of him or just fetch value isn't a hot idea to me.

Corrupting Influence Within Team Spirit

Post#114 » by Ranma » Sun Jul 9, 2017 1:52 am

It may be no big deal, but this team has been rolling with everyone willing to play their part, so I'm perturbed with Puig showing up and questioning Roberts for taking him out of the game. This sort of thing is what can derail a great season. Maybe I'm overreacting but I've also noticed some moments where he seems to resent Bellinger's popularity and standing with the team to the point of even snubbing Cody a bit.

Dude needs to realize that the team has actually put him in a position to succeed by taking pressure off of him as well as having Turner Ward work with him to fix the flaws with his batting approach and mechanics. While he certainly provides good defense in right field, he's also endangered the health of our center fielder with his occasional pursuit of balls with reckless abandon. This is why I've thought that we should trade him if we ever did acquire Mike Trout rather than risk Puig ending his career or putting him out of commission sharing the same outfield.

This also goes toward explaining how there is talk that the team still finds him to be a nuisance. I hope Roberts sits Yasiel for a couple of games to send a message. I don't even care if it affects his play as that would be enough for me to dump him.

I wouldn't worry about it.

the younger guys were the ones partying with Puig while he was demoted to AAA last season. they will just assume that is Yasiel being Yasiel. the older guys have seized the control of the locker room at this point where guys like Forsythe, Utley, Turner and Clay have pretty much rule with iron fist. it is not like the days when it wasn't just Puig, but guys like Kemp and Greinke were escalating the situation.
ehhhhh f it.

My Observations

Even before this immature display, I read/heard somewhere that despite the team's overall good chemistry and Yasiel's supposedly relative good behavior, his teammates considered him a nuisance or annoyance. It surprised me a bit when I read or heard it.

In any case, it was from a legitimate media source I came across maybe a month ago. It was either in a local newspaper or national media article or one of those Fox Sports or ESPN insider-esque videos. It didn't seem like a big deal based on the context, but again, it stood out compared to how the rest of the clubhouse was described.

I didn't make a big deal about it then, until I saw his latest tantrum. Plus, I noticed what I perceived to be a slight snub of Bellinger, who tried to congratulate Puig from the on-deck circle, during a Dodgers telecast. Yasiel had hit a home run and, after rounding the bases to head to the dugout, Cody extended a high five to him. Now Puig actually made contact with Cody but in a dismissive manner. Even Cody looked back at Yasiel on his way to the plate because he thought it was odd behavior.

Again, it did't seem like a major thing just another "Yasiel being Yasiel" moment, but these things stood out to me and when added together, doesn't paint him in a good light and provides me with building concern. Now I'm probably constructing the narrative of Puig resenting Cody a bit, but it seems to fit his personality and behavior. Even on his good behavior, he's always been self-centered when it comes to things like endangering his good friend and teammate Joc Pederson in the outfield.

Now to be fair, I also have to disclose that Puig also joined the celebration when Bellinger walked for the walk-off victory last night splashing Cody with bottled water and talcum powder, but he quickly joined a more isolated group of three teammates on the walk off the field. This was the same game Roberts took him out for the double-switch, which triggered the tantrum.
