President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

Because, if the Wizards had their druthers, they'd pay him less than the max. If the Wizards' threat to match the max scares off the Kings, Nets, etc., then Porter wouldn't get the max offer he seeks. He'd then have to come back to negotiate with the Wizards, and either try to negotiate a better, sub-max offer, or take the 1-year QO and leave next year. I assume the Wizards believe that the discussions are currently amicable enough such that Porter turning down a 4- or 5-year deal to take the 1-year QO is unlikely.

If the Kings were to ignore the Wizards' public position and sign Porter to a max deal anyway, then I suspect that the Wizards would wait the maximum amount of time before matching, in order to tie up the Kings' cap room for as long as possible. So, the Kings would lose out a little bit. Still, as I said earlier, the Kings might think the gamble is worth it: in the best case scenario, they call the Wizards' bluff and land Porter. In the worst-case scenario, they get to show their fan base that they're aggressively trying to improve their roster, even if they're missing out on guys like Iggy and Porter.

Then this gets back to the point I am making; you already made him wait for his extension and now still playing games. Do we know if Porter really wants to be here? If he signs w/the Nets or Kings and makes it clear he doesn't want to be here; do the Wizards still keep him?

Reading between the lines this is what you're HOPING for. :)

I mean I suppose it's possible he no longer wants to be in D.C. but at this point it's just speculation (or wishful thinking).

It's my understanding that the Wizards didn't "make him wait" for his extension; they made him an offer and he declined. Porter and his team looked at the FA landscape and gambled that he could get a max offer if he waited. They're still playing out that strategy.

There is no indication, as far as I've heard or read, that Porter was insulted by the Wizards' extension offer last year, or the Wizards' current offer this year. From everything I've read, he's happy in DC: he's starting for a playoff team, and he gets to stay close to his college program.

If you know differently, I'd love to hear it.

I'll note that the Timberwolves employed a similar strategy with Nikola Pekovic back in 2o13. Pekovic was regarded as a quality young big at the time, and the Wolves made it clear that they were going to aggressively match any contracts. Other teams stayed away. Pekovic eventually re-signed with MIN -- but it didn't happen until August 13 of that year, and it was for a 5-year deal that was considered a relative bargain at the time (granted, this was before Pekovic's health woes).

I suspect that a similar outcome here would be the Wizards' best-case scenario. If we take the Wizards at their word, matching a 4-year contract -- while not ideal -- would be more than tolerable. And, unless EG pees in Porter's coffee, the worst-case scenario (Porter taking the 1-yr QO) is unlikely.

FWIW I think Porter intends to stay in Washington. If not, why would you have the Kings fly to DC and meet you in your agents office? Wouldn't you go visit Sac?

Something is fishy with these numbers. We both start at 24.75, and we can offer 5 years with bigger raises, but our 5 year offer is only 19million more than the Nets 4?
Making extreme statements like "only" sounds like there are "no" Jokics in this draft? Jokic is an engine that was drafted in the 2nd round. Always a chance to see diamond dropped by sloppy burgular after a theft.

Yeah, Otto has made no secret he loves DC. He doesn't seem like a guy willing to move after being here for 6 years already (Georgetown and Wiz).

Because he's sick of flying across the country all season. Obviously that comes with the job, but if he can avoid a 5 hour flight x 2 why not do it?

What's the general feeling among Wizards fans on this? I know I can't say **** with the position we're in but I would hate to be forced into maxing Porter.

A max considering his form after the ASB is scary to me

He was banged up

Otto is on the upswing. I have no problem paying him. Good young players who work hard like him will continue to get better. Plus we don't have anything reliable behind him.

The worst contract on the roster is Mahinmi. Without that and we would have a fiscally sound roster.

It would've been nice to re-up him for a bargain, but the market has spoken. Given that Porter hasn't signed it yet, the Wizards (in theory) still have an opportunity to give him a 5-year sub-max offer that might be more attractive than a 4-year max offer. We don't know what kinds of player options and trade kickers SAC gave Porter to try to make matching less palatable, so it might behoove us to up our offer now.

After that BS Wall pulled I would not want to be in Washington if I were Porter.

Thing is the Kings are not sniffing the POs, Otto is a winner and the Wizz finally have a decent team in a weak conference.

Edit : my bad got the years wrong.

Assuming the Wizards match and he's making around $25M a year, I'm sure he could give a rat's ass that Wall wanted Paul George to play small forward here.

Lots of places Otto can make the same money and not have to deal with that jerk.

Return to Washington Wizards
