Dudes have not watched him hoop since he was a Knick. His improvement this year was spectacular. Dude can very well become a core piece.

Where is he going to play? Right now he's the backup to Lee.

I have a feeling we're going to dump Lee for nothing.

Not to mention, are we really going into the season with Baker, Frank and Randle as our PGs? Because at this juncture, none of them can even bring the ball up the court without issues.

While i am pretty upset with this contract, the only way Hardaway is the backup to Lee (assuming Lee stays) is if we decide that Hardaway has more impact as a scoring 6th man. He is not as consistent, but he looked like a better player than Lee last season. BB IQ, ball handling, and defense is improved.

Question, is the trade kicker and player option only part of the deal if Hawks match? Like a poison pill type thing? Or is it legit part of the deal?

I'm telling you - they're believing his second half breakout is legit:

SelbyCobra wrote:I don't necessarily agree with it, but the Knicks are banking on his post ASG breakout as being real (and you can go back to almost the halfway point of the season to his being good actually starting).

Hardaway, Jr., Post-ASG:
32.0 MPG, 17.5 PPG, 3.5 REB, 2.6 ASST, .471 FG%, .593 TS%

By contrast, here are Klay Thompson's full-season numbers in the same categories:
34.0 MPG, 22.5 PPG, 3.7 REB, 2.1 ASST, .468 FG%, .592 TS%

Obviously Klay is a waaaaaay better defender, but I think the Knicks are buying THjr's second half last year as a jumping off point for the rest of his career. If it is, they actually win this contract in a BIG way - that's a valuable offensive player, playing efficiently, in an offensive-leaning league.

If not, then, well, yeah...it everything we fear and more.

How did that second half breakout look against the Wizards in the playoffs?

He still scored in double figures 4 of 6 games.

I would not make too much of one playoff series, especially when it was his first legit playoff experience.

Dion Waiters sucked balls for OKC in the playoffs to last year, but then followed it up with a career resurgence in Miami.

Harrison Barnes was atrocious in the Finals last year, but he was solid for the Mass this season.

I'm really right down the middle with this yo.
I'm not setting myself up to eat crow because Timmy can actually ball hard on this contract but I'm also not about to get my hopes up either because this is the Knicks. Lmao.

I honestly don't really care anymore. Let's just trade Lee & O'Quinn for a PG, trade Melo to a winner & see how KP has grown. Also what Frank got in him. This move keeps Dotson on the bench where he can flourish off the rip. If anything, Timmy & Dotson are great shooters to have at that position.

phatmanscoop wrote:People need to grasp the concept of the salary cap. This isn't 2010-2014 where the Cap was set at around 57 Million, There has been huge hikes which is why the past 2 years these contracts have ballooned. Granted we did overpay but you would have to considering hes a RFA, Just look at Otto Porter and his 100 million dollar contract (does his defense really make him worth Max Money?)

2010 NBA SALARY Cap is 58 Million, If you want to convert Timmy's contract to what it would've been before the ballooning Salary Cap it would probably be a 4 Year 40 Million dollar contract

58,000,000 x 17.75% = 10.3/ Year

2017 Cap is 99 Million-100 Mill

100 Mill x 17.75% = 17.75/ year (4 years 71 million) which is what he got.

As far as him eating space, if we trade Melo for expirings, or contracts that end in 2 years like Melo we would have 25++ million in cap space in 2 years, thats assuming the cap doesn't go up which it most likely should. In the meantime we can continue the rebuild and if Timmy develops the way he has we are looking at a starting 2 that would average 16-20 ppg, with good percentages its a spot we wouldnt need to look at Free Agency to fill. I would love to tank but I think we are more talented then the nets, jazz, lakers, pacers, Magic and tbh this move doesn't make us significantly better than the other teams around us like the Mavs. This is a lateral move that would pan out but hes 29 and hopefully in 4 years Porzingis/WHG/Frank develop into the players we expect that too while also adding 2 more lottery picks in the next few years.

I'm sure Mills isn't done, we can swap out Lee for a first round pick as well as KOQ/Melo

What a logical, sound argument. Kudos to you.

"The Knicks have Derrick Rose's Bird Rights, so they can exceed the salary cap to re-sign him next summer if they choose. This is significant because it would allow the Knicks to use most of their cap space to sign free agents in the summer of 2017 and then also re-sign Rose. The Knicks can also sign Rose to a three-year extension before 6/30/2017 because he has been under the same contract for more than three years." Ian Begley last year

Is this true?

I'm just waiting for the next tweet which will be that we don't have enough cap room so we're goon sign and trade with Atl to make it work in trading them KOQ for THJ.

Considering the value? Nah man. Hardaways offense is obviously better but Hollidays defense is way better.

A lot of these hawks fans want to match the deal and see how hard THJ worked and how much he improved. He's only 25, it really isn't THAT bad

Hawks and Knicks are different situations. They have a good coach and a system and THJ can fit right in. We don't even have a new President, we don't know if Jeff is here past this year, our only PGs are Frank/Baker/Randle, we already have a starting SG in Lee. It doesn't make sense to blow everything right now on THJ.

Isn't there a rule where we can't sign and trade if an offer sheet is signed?
I really don't know. Somebody help me out....

I think we as KNicks fans need to take a deep breath and relax, if the deal happens it happens and we might have signed an up and coming player in THJR, they liked him a lot in ATL he was really their best player in the 2nd half and did a lot for them. I am not sure how his defense was in ATL, did he improve, was he better (you'd have to ask them as I didn't see him play much) but the offer is out there, its up to ATL to either match or not, if they don't we have to embrace Hardaway JR and hope he continues to develop into an all around player if they match the offer than we will see how he does in A-Town for the next 4 years and hope (well not hope) but watch closely as to how he plays and if he is worth what he signed for.

Overall Porter is better because of defense. Timmy got better at that too.

Lmao, Porter is much better offensively than THJR. He's one of the best shooters in basketball.

Alright maybe not Porter but just making the point that it is not terrible considering the market. He is better than you guys give him credit for.

I wouldn't be surprised if Atlanta matches.
