Re: Should the NBA eliminate conferences for the playoffs?
Why is this even a thing? If you eliminate conferences, maybe 1-2 teams change year to year in the playoffs. It’s silly to bother, considering, only 3-4 teams have a shot at the title the way the NBA is structured right now. Much bigger problems than this tinkering of the 8 seeds, who the hell cares.... Now if you really want to make things better and bring competition back to the league and keep teams in their existing markets...
Start with a hard cap
Franchise Tag
Eliminate all exceptions to the cap. Eliminate all options in contracts, both team and player.
3 years of rookie scale and 3 years of arb for both 1st and 2nds
Allow controlling teams to offer up to 6 years at 45% of max to one player.
10% of owners BRI must be put into fund for new arena construction and upgrades- no more hijacking taxpayers.
The NBA is starting to turn into a big market free-for-all where super teams form. If you aren’t a top 10 market going forward you are going to be hard pressed to contend. Cleveland is done after this season. San Antonio is on the slide as well (but really SA is a huge city, so i hate it when they call themselves a small market). LA, D.C., SF, Boston, Miami, Houston, Chicago, Dallas, and NY. Super teams are going to center around those markets for years to come, if not right away in some cases.

Then why not lose conferences entirely?

Same story as in the 80's. Only it was the EAST that was dominant. This will even out over time. Right now, it's the West's turn. People overreact way too much!

The top 16 teams should be in the playoffs.
My all-time starting five: Hakeem Olajuwan, Michael Jordan, and three 3nD role players.
I follow the NBA, not just one team.

But they play completely different schedules. A team thats 41-41 in the West would have 45+ wins in the East.
But this is also the reason why eliminating conferences would only lead to people complaining about scheduling. The NBA can't make an even schedule. It's not practical.

yes it was evident it needed to happen 10 years ago. NBA wont do it bc they funnel all the talent West so LeBron can have his free pass to the Finals every yr. if LeBron moves to the Western Conference or when he retires, you'll see a lot of good players allowed to join Eastern Conference teams again

Re: Should the NBA eliminate conferences for the playoffs?
Seedings would have changed but the same 16 teams would have made it in last year. It gets old to keep hearing people act like there would have been 14 Western Conference teams in. And the schedules are not going to change. Travel is a big enough problem now, and there is no way they want to make it worse. There has always been an ebb and flow to which conference is better. The same could be said for the NFL and the MLB. Travel concerns necessitate conferences and conferences necessitate 2 groupings of playoff teams simply because how can you compare records when they don't play the same teams? There are a lot of issues in the NBA and this is so far down the list. Wait a few years and the East will be the top conference....well, maybe. if their owners weren't idiots that would be the case. Now that's something the league should address!

And that is the dumbest thing I have ever heard. You aren't alone. I've heard others saying it too. And it sounds just as dumb no matter who types it.

I really hope they get rid of these conferences. Im tired of seeing Lebron play below .500 teams in the first two rounds of the playoffs.

I didn't like it back then either. We should have seen Pistons-Bulls NBA finals, Sixers-Celtics finals.
I think removing of conferences could work without a major schedule change.
Currently a team plays 2 times against the 15 team in the other conference, 4 times against the 4 teams in the same division, 4 times against the 6 teams in the same conference, and 3 times against the other 4 teams in the same conference.
Change it to 4 times against 4 teams in the same division, 3 times against the 16 other teams, and 2 times against the 9 remaining teams. I think that would be fair.

Yeah why improve the product when we can just watch sh*t teams get blown out in the playoffs.

That's not the point, the point is to get the most competitive games possible every time.
Did you watch this year's playoffs? I tried and fell into a deep two month long coma. This league has become boring AF.

Honestly I'm thinking top 8 to 12 teams makes more sense. 16 teams is way too many for a league with no competitive balance.
