Carmelo Anthony assuming one playoff series is not a great sample size, which it isn't.

Paul George plays defense and surprisingly has a better career 3pt%. Better impact stats as well.

As the board's newest PG stan I feel nearly obligated to choose him.

But seriously. prime Melo was fantastic and it's pretty clearly him here to me.

George needs to be more consistent. He isn't a good enough jump shooter to shoot them at the volume Melo did. He also needs to take it upon himself to be a better playmaker because he has decent handles and a high IQ.

Yep, and there was legitimately a time when Melo was a top 5ish player in the NBA with no questions asked. I don't really recall that for PG.

Nope, but George still has time to grow as a player, especially joining forces with Westbrook.

I am excited, and I think Paul George is the ideal "2nd banana" in today's landscape, and certainly with a player like Russell Westbrook. I am not sure if the Thunder will win many more games this season considering how much stronger the west will be, but I believe they will be a 48-50 win team with 4 - 5 SRS.

Carmelo (06 - 14): 26.3/6.7/3.2, 1.1 steal, 2.9 to, 3.3 attempts from 3 on 35.3%, 22.1 PER, 55.4 TS%, .386 FTR, 16.3 AST%, 10.9 TOV%, 32.5 USG%, .149 WS/48, 1.8 BPM

George (13 - 17, excluding 15): 21.2/6.9/3.7, 1.8 steals, 3.0 to, 6.4 attempts from 3 on 37.3%, 19.4 PER, 55.8 TS%, .307 FTR, 18.5 AST%, 13.5 TOV%, 27.7 USG%, .151 WS/48, 4.1 BPM

I think Carmelo is a clearly better scorer with many of his seasons taking place in a more difficult to score in era (06-12 versus 13-17) and he had the best two seasons out of all these guys seasons (09 and 14). The advantage that Paul George has defensively has shrunk since his role has been increased offensively, which still isn't close to that of what Carmelo has had to endure over his prime. We already saw George unable to be an elite defender when he was asked to be a #1 option. On the other hand, George looks better in most impact data we have (specifically on/off).

Carmelo is being underrated. I think he's clearly better. But George could potentially improve this year playing with Westbrook.

How so? There is no way he is a "much more complete" player because Melo was a borderline top 10 player throughout his prime, just like George. On top of that, to be a much more complete player than Melo you need to be someone like Jimmy Butler or LeBron James, something George doesn't yet hold a candle too.

George is a better passer and defender then Melo. Both Butler and George are better then Melo.

George is barely a better passer, and his defense has certainly slipped since his offensive load has increased. George's offensive value still is less than what Prime Carmelo provided, and the scoring isn't close at all.

I also want to know when Carmelo was clearly one of the top players in the league (not just scoring wise)

If Melo's prime is taken from 06-14, off the top of my head, I think the following are in the conversation (depending on year) in terms of ranking for his early-mid prime:
KG
Pierce
Wade
Lebron
Durant
Kobe
Ginobili
TD
Dirk
Pau Gasol
CP3
Yao
Tmac
Vince
Billups
Derrick Rose
Dwight
Arenas
Derrick Williams

Late prime, I don't think he makes the top 20.

I'd take 2016 and 2017 Paul George comfortably over peak Melo. 2014 George is at a similar level.
