mitchell looks really good. his pg game needs some work, but at worst he can easily function as a backup pg, 2nd ball handler, primary wing defender and possible starting sg. his floor is high.

so, now that we've had a chance to see more of mitchell and not having seen monk at all, would anyone take the sure thing in mitchell over the unknown in monk? i assume nobody is at that point yet, right? closer than you were 2 weeks ago, right?

I know mitchell can defend at NBA level at both guard positions
I know mitchell can handle backup pg duties at NBA level
I know mitchell has NBA range
I know mitchell can become 2nd playmaker/initiator

Sure things after SL? You're better than that, Fats

plus i dont really watch ncaa, so this is my first time really seeing most of these guys in action. im finally forming some ideas of who these players are outside of youtube and draft reviews.

it kills me that i have to wait until preseason to see monk, in what will probably be a watered down role given to him early on by cliff. don't be surprised at all if MCW is stealing a lot of minutes in 1st half of season that we assumed were going to monk.

Calipari said he's only coached one other guy who can do what Monk does athletically - Derrick Rose. And Monk can shoot, play off the ball, and isn't an idiot.

If he didn't play with two non-shooting guards I'm positive there's no way in hell he would have fallen to 11.

The move he put on Berry in this game is something only a few NBA players are capable of:

I was seriously fixing to post this video and tell fat to watch it on loop, it's all we have for now but I get pumped every time I see it knowing he may be injured (right now) but we don't have to rely on any ping pong balls or who falls where in the draft because he's ours, all ours! We just have to be patient until October now. :(

id rather see a video compilation of monk's defense, passing and playmaking. I have no doubt he can get buckets. monk's true value lies in either having some pg/playmaking skills and/or proving he can defend pgs/wings at an average to above average level. im hoping for more than just a lou williams/shorter crawford clone.

The thing is, Monk played PG in high school, he just happened to have been recruited after a guy named De'Aaron Fox so Calipari asked him to play the 2. He was a victim of circumstance in college...hes the better scorer and Fox is the better playmaker.

I dont know if he will ever become a starting PG caliber playmaker without help but I dont see why he couldnt at least be at a Derrick Rose-ish level and run a team...especially a second unit. I love what we did this year by getting a big PG that can guard the 2 while he guards the 2nd unit PG...pretty much the ultimate situation for him as a rookie IMO.

Monk isn't a point guard. But we already knew that. He's an undersized 2 guard who doesn't possess the physical profile to operate on either end as a 2 guard. So, I think Monk's usage next season will be as a "scoring" guard. He'll handle the ball some in sets, but his usefulness will be off the ball.

On defense, he'll be as effective as his effort level because he is too slight to fight through screens and he can't check 2 guards. Like a lot of score-first young players, Monk will likely struggle with the physicality and length of the NBA. It'll take him a while to figure it out.

The key for Monk's development will be to not ask him to be what he is not, but to develop and improve on what he could be while letting him be what he is - a young, inexperienced, cocky scoring guard who will have to try REALLY HARD on the defensive end of the floor to keep his minutes.

I think Monk's scope of play will be limited next season, and our expectations should be tempered. But he has a bright future.

I'm not going to make prognostications of what Monk is and isn't when he's only 19 years old. The player that we need to model his development after is obvious though - Steph Curry. And I'm excited that we have a coach on our staff who Curry himself credits for his development as a point guard in Silas. We need to do whatever is in our power to keep him in Charlotte for as long as we can.

It'd be different if CatGutStitches hadn't just posted Monk played PG throughout high school. It is not like we are trying to force Howard to play PG. Monk has played the position plenty, even at UK with Fox in foul trouble. He will be fine as long as Cliff 1. Let's him play significant (relatively speaking for a rookie) minutes and 2. Is patient with him.

I thought your post was pretty ironic because I'm guessing you haven't watched a full game of him playing PG in high school.

IMO PG skills are a question mark for him.

I don't know if he will ever be a primary ball handler but if you watch his highlight vids the thing that I saw that I was excited about is he can run pick and roll, there are a few vids of him and bam running pnr and monk throwing lobs to bam.

I think he has potential as a secondary ball handler

To me Monk is nearly a better PG prospect than Fox. And especially better than DSJ. I dont see that kid making it.

Fox is going to really struggle shooting the 3 and without that as a weapon does anyone really think hes better than Jeff teague?

Monk has that Curry lite offensive game. Not concerned with his defense. The position where you are all too happy to trade defense for offense is your lead guard.

Here's some video of the Florida game where Monk had more ball-handling opportunities with Fox out:

Not as much to see in this one, but still cool that he dropped 50 points on Lonzo Ball:

Monk is fully capable of being a PG although I'm hoping he just shift effortlessly into the role of being a dual guard alongside Kemba. The league is becoming positionless and he has the ability to do anything most point guards, especially backup point guards, can do in this league.
