What are the Spurs doing this offseason?

Post#1 » by vxmike » Sun Jul 16, 2017 6:06 pm

What exactly does everyone think the Spurs are doing? Other than re-signing Mills to a good contract they've let Dedmon and Simmons leave on good value contracts. Both guys played good roles last year.

I think they might be punting this season to clear their cap space for summer 2018. LMA sounds like he has little interest returning for that last year's player option, and Parker is done. They really need to wait out Parker's expiring contract this season. Manu might play one more season, and Pau declining his option was very strange if they aren't making any moves???

Signing Gay was an odd move. He might be worthless post Achilles or might be enough to keep them relevant in the playoff picture. I'd understand a team option for '18-19 but a player option hurts the cap space plan if he doesn't return to form and opts in. It's a risk if LMA opts in too--perhaps his market falls off unless he has a throwback year. I don't really see anyone offering him $22m+ at this point.

What's the plan? Who do they want to sign next summer if saving cap space is the plan?

Honestly can't believe they would rather spend the money on Gay and not Simmons

Can't really question RC and Pops results over the years. Until it fails I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt.

Spurs will probably be the 3rd seed behind Hou or 6th seed behind Utah OKC and LAC to avoid GS 2nd round. They are setting for 2018 free agency.

If it's true Aldridge wants out they could have potentially 70m in cap space. I'm sure they're thinking a Big-3 of CP3-Leonard-James could challenge Golden St?

Thinking they are retooling and in a transition year preparing to make a big run next offseason at all the big Free Agents. I'm actually surprised how high the expectations are for them this year, I trust Pop and Kawhi but beyond that the roster doesn't really seem like a team built to beat OKC or Houston in the playoffs, let alone Golden State.

1 year deal only. Spurs offered him 1 year, $8mil.

Gay will opt out. But to answer the question?

Preserving cap space, that's it. They'll build a whole new team in 2018, sans Kawhi, Murray and Patty.

I think they're just trying to re-develop some young, cheap talent and take a run at the FA class of 2018. I think LMA will opt out, Green's contract will be up and they'll have a ton of room to take a swing at George, CP3 and Lebron.

i think they are considering this coming season a wash, and are looking forward to next one after that. Only logical explanation I have at this point.

2018 free agency.

Can have 70m+ plus in cap.

Kawhi/Pop will be an attractive destination for LBJ/CP3 if they want to win chips.

Not messing up their cap. I think next year they'll have more room to sign guys. I know a few pod casters have floated the idea that LeBron should play for Pop. LeBron, Kawhi and maybe a third player after LMA leaves could contend to beat the warriors.

The Spurs aren't dumb enough to lock up oft-injured CP3 long term at his age.

I think Lebron will leave the Cavs again. Would he swallow his ego and let himself be coached by Pop? Lebron and Kawhi would be a perfect fit if Lebron is ready for the move to PF. Mills is a perfect low usage PG with two ball handling forwards.

Any guess what Pau does?

I don't think 34 year old Lebron + Kawahi is even beating GS, but if they add a third piece, then you might have a team that could actually beat GS.

Man, Lebron and Kawhi on the same team would be so dominant defensively

Cheap center
Lebron
Kawhi
Green
Mills

That's really solid. Mills and Green are both low usage two-way players who play good D and hit threes. Best forward combo in the league and these four match up defensively against GSW's big four.

Murray, Gay and Pau off the bench plus the normal Spurs minimum signings and reclamation projects.

Big threes are becoming more difficult to fit into the cap. Maybe a big two where both are top 5 players and play both ends at a high level can work?

List of 2018 free agents: https://sports.yahoo.com/top-50-nba-free-agents-2018-131115656.html

Point guard position is really thin after Paul and Westbrook.

Probably gearing up for a run at Lebron.
Brian Geltzeiler: You see Mark Jackson getting a head coaching job as early as next year?

Adrian Wojnarowski: Not if people make calls on him. Not if an organization is doing their homework and knows all the things he brings with him.

If Gay averages a 11 ppg on good percentages it would be a great pick up .. the spurs let Simmons walk cause he isn't very good

I doubt they'll have a legit shot for Paul or James but Boogie or even PG on the other hand...

But as long as we don't see a LMA trade I can't understand the Spurs' plan, their transactions only make sense if they get off Aldridge
