Yeah, I'm no fan of Ayton. I don't like his defense, he has no polished offensive low post skills, and he lacks competitive fire. He can shoot tho.

This is wrong bro lol

TERRIBLE DEFENSE, OFFERED ZERO RIM PROTECTION, NO FIRE, CONTENT TO SHOOT J's ALL DAY

ZERO REFINED POST SKILLS

Did you watch the evidence (in the form of videos) I posted?

I'm not saying the dude is trash. I am saying he is not my type of big. Not a natural rim protector. Doesn't have refined post skills. And doesn't have that fire & desire. Seems like he is content to shoot jumpers and has a meh mentality.

Now Bamba. Bamba has that nastiness I like as a big. Just not as offensively skilled. But he will be a defensive monster.

I know we just drafted Frank but I am keeping track of Trevon Duval considering it'll be a tall order for us to crack the top 3.

Duval is a Westbrook/MVP Rose clone. The question is can he fix that jumpshot and is he a *real* PG or a tunnel vision scorer in a PG body which currently renders a guy like Rose a net negative?

Bamba is a better rim protector, but he can get bodied - this is an issue on offense, as well. He's also less refined than Ayton is on offense. They both have issues - Ayton has issues with motor (IMO, once he fixes this his defense goes up a ridiculous amount), but Bamba is RAW and is super thin.

IMO, Ayton, at the very least, can get by on his skills even if he ends up busting (and he's shown that even with a low motor he can absolutely kill it on the floor); if Bamba busts, he'll end up a souped up Saer Sene. I think Ayton has the higher ceiling and floor, TBH...but I also thought Gobert would bust, so maybe I'm just off on those kinds of bigs.

2018 Draft Thread

I think Wendell Carter Jr is a very intriguing prospect and I think he'll be within our draft range. Next year we should be drafting a wing or a defensive big man such as Mo Bamba and others. I thin Wendell Carter Jr, Marvin Bagley and Troy Brown are good wing options

I think Carter and Bagley can both play positions 3-5 in the NBA depending on how they develop. They both look like post players now but they are both working on their perimeter skills and are improving at them pretty quickly

Bagley MIGHT be able to, but I don't think his perimeter skills are that refined and I don't think they ever will be. He's fluid for a 4, but not really what you want in terms of fluidity for a 3. Playing him at the 3 isn't really a legitimate option. I think he'll end up being a legit 4 who can play small ball 5. As for Carter...the guy is a big through and through.

2018 Draft Thread

Post#173 » by chs234 » Mon Jul 17, 2017 1:49 pm

Have you guys watched Carter play at all? He is going to be a stretch 4 in the NBA. He has also lost a lot of weight and put on muscle- his body fat % is very low right now. I think he can be a stretch 4 sometimes play the 3 type of player. Carter is rapidly improving his perimeter skills. He is certainly not going to be a 5 in the NBA.

By the time Carter is done in college next season I'll bet he's capable of defending 3-5

i disagree about his post moves tho, it's pretty good imo

I doubt we'll be in range of a top 3 pick but still in the lottery. Unlike many Im not against that if its because our young players played hard and got a few extra wins. My attention then turns to Miles Bridges who I thought had a great year last year. He scores in just about any way imaginable, is a great rebounder, can play above the rim.

Ayton is a bit stiff legged and his overall skills I don't think translates to the NBA. And the talk about a questionnable motor doesn't help. Even in that clip posted a few posts above, he stands around watching a whole lot despite being the biggest guy on the floor. He's definitely not Embiid in any case (healthy or not). If he was a healthy Embiid he'd be no.1 overall already.

Man, Ayton showed NOTHING in that 1v1 vid. He looked like a deer in headlights and completely out of his element. Right now he is a face-up 5 with a nice J and a cleanup guy inside who scores off dump passes, offensive rebound putbacks, and athleticism. No skills in the post at all.

He is still a dope NBA big man. Just not someone that wows me for what he COULD BE if he had a better motor, more intensity, better footwork, and dedicated himself to going to a big man camp to learn some post moves and good counters.

For instance, WHG has no where near his physical tools yet gets every ounce out of the physical gifts he has because he comes from a basketball family and they put an emphasis on being SKILLED. If Willy had Ayton's body and physical tools he would be a top 5 young big in the league.

With all that said, looking forward to seeing how Ayton develops across this college season.

With all due respect, Carter is not a 3 bro. He will NEVER be a three. EVER. He is a 5. It is even a stretch to consider him a modern day 4 let alone a 3.

I like Bridges. He can score anywhere on the floor. Explosive leaper. Plays hard. Tough. Wide body. Defends. My issue with him is although he has factors that make up for being undersized, he strikes me as the type that will eventually suffer some type of injury that robs him of his athleticism. I don't think his game will age well or provide much durability long term. Strikes me as the LJ, Weatherspoon prototype. At some point early in his career he just won't be the same and will be a shell of himself. Barkley is the rare case in this prototype that had effective longevity. I would shy away for that reason unless others I like are off the board.
