Where do our big 3 rank among prospects since 2014?

Post#1 » by ProcessDoctor » Sat Aug 12, 2017 12:59 pm

I know we've all been thinking about how awesome Fultz, Simmons, and Embiid can potentially be together. It had me wondering just how good are they as prospects in comparison to other players drafted since 2014? Do we have the 3 best prospects coming out of the last 4 drafts? Rank our big 3 and decide for yourself whether or not you want to factor in injury history, off-the-court issues, etc. Just rank them according to when they were coming out, NOT where they are now. I'll start:

1. KAT
2. Embiid
3. Simmons
4. Wiggins
5. Fultz
6. Ball
7. Parker
8. Ingram
9. Russell
10. Porzingas

I'd vote 3 within the top 5...
2023-2024 Philadelphia 76ers:

Lowry/Melton/Payne
Maxey/Hield/Downtin
Oubre/Batum/Council
Harris/Covington/Martin
Embiid/Reed/Bamba

Assuming that we are not factoring injury history unless it was pre-college like a DSJ or Giles. Obviously, some of these look better than others at this point but as prospects the second they were done with the NCAA it goes imo:

1. Embiid
2. KAT
3. Simmons
4. Wiggins
5. Fultz
6. Parker
7. Russell
8. Ball
9. Ingram

It all starts to blend in after that. Porzingod was a high level prospect but was considered a bit risky and definitely a project. JJ and Tatum were/are a bit divisive. Some love them some hate them. Any of those 3 seem right to me at 10 though.
They say an analytics man doesn't have a heart, but I ran the numbers and nothing can be further from the truth - Sam Hinkie probably

Why do people enjoy these topics so much."Where does so and so rank in the lasts draft?" It's almost always based on revisionist history and there really isn't any meaningful discussion to have because of it.

This is always a tricky question. There is a tendency to re-rank the players based on how they perform at the NBA level. But based on how I thought of the players at the time of his each player's draft day...

1. Embiid
2. Towns
3. Simmons
4. Ball
5. Russell
6. J. Jackson
7. Ingram
8. Wiggins
9. Parker
10.D. Smith

Edit: When I look back again, I probably liked Wiggins a little more than Ingram.

3. Towns
4. Ball
5. Jackson
6. Fultz
7. Wiggins
8. Okafor(sadly I had him the 2nd best prospect in the 2015 draft smh)
9. Parker
10. Ingram

Good call on Jokic.

1) Embiid
.
.
.
2) Simmons
3) Towns
4) Porzingis
5) Jokic
6) Fultz
7) Ball
8) Josh Jackson
9) Ingram
10) Wiggins

KAT doesn't go higher until he's no longer the worst defensive center in the league.

Pretty sure the premise is top prospects at the time of the draft. Jokic was a 2nd round pick.

fair enough, but then i don't really see the point in discussing this, since you could basically just go by draft position. if we're going by time of draft, okafor should probably make the top 10 list.

1.) Towns - star production but just a young age
2.) Biid - will end #1 w/ more sample size
3.) Ben Simmons - will end up #2 w/more sample size
4.) Jokic - totally not high on him but im being fair because of his insane +/-
5.) KP - not that high on him but he's productive and promising.
6.) Fultz - chance to rewrite definition of modern PG (positionless movement)
7.) Ball - star impact PG. Not a fan of non scoring guards
8.) Wiggins - eye candy scoring wing
9.) Ingram - i like him a lot (more than KP;deflections+3s) but his inconsistency is just crazy
10.) DLo - poor version of Fultz mostly because he's more of a SG than PG

Well, if you're going to rank them based on how they've performed, instead of how you perceived them at the time of their drafts, then you left out Myles Turner, Gary Harris and Devin Booker ...

You're missing the OP's premise. It's asking, given the top picks in the '14, '15, '16, and '17 draft, where would Simmons/Embiid/Fultz rank in terms of expectations coming in. You can't just go by draft position since there were 4 #1s, 4 #2s, etc, and since obviously some #1s and #2s or #3s were better prospects than others.

It should be interesting who has the best or longest career between DSJ and Fultz.

DSJ is an exciting prospect like Westbrook, however his style of play seems reckless at times.
Fultz has a more hesitation and change of direction game to get shots, maybe less reckless.

Okafor has been a disappointment so far, but I would like to see him play with talent, such as Simmons + Fultz. He could regain some value.

I hope this is how it shakes out, when we look back at these last 4 years. That would make the last 4 years of drafting a huge success. If we end up with the two best talents from the last 4 drafts, we'll be successful. Right now, I have mixed feelings about what we've done with the opportunities that Hinkie presented for us. I think we should have way more with a #3, #10, #3, #1, #3 and 2018 Lakers' pick than what we have. But maybe I'm being greedy.

Ignoring injury history, I think Embiid is the best talent of the last decade. Yes, even better than Anthony Davis. Embiid as a rookie impacted the Sixers to a level that few players in NBA history ever had. Honestly, if he just wouldn't have slipped on that damn floor, he would've had one of the single greatest rookie seasons ever. Up there with top tier HOFers.

So Embiid will be my #1.
I guess KAT #2
3. Simmons
4. Porzingis(post draft, not pre. Pre I'd have him much lower)
5. Fultz
6. Wiggins
7. Dennis Smith Jr
8. Josh Jackson
9. Tatum
10. Ingram
