I'm not sure what similarities you see between the two but Dwight has quit on multiple teams and coaches.

The similarity is not in game. But Dwight started off beloved and seemed like a guy who could overcome the INEVITABLE obstacles in the way of becoming a great NBA player. Then he started to decline the minute he left Orlando. Yeah he's limited by his offensive talent but that's not the whole thing -- his questionable toughness and attitude became a problem.

KP doesn't show a bad work ethic. He doesn't show that he's definitely a clown either. But if you don't think there's more signs of clownery now than after his rookie year, I think you're turning a blind eye a little. He is a guy coming off a good but clearly not great 2nd season who pushed out one of the most revered basketball people ever. That's a little worrisome.

Now, I don't know his precise reasons, so I'm not taking out my pitchfork yet, but he seemed to do it publicly. He could easily have done it more privately. There are some bad signs, and no -- I don't think he came close to great last season.

Would I trade him? Nope. Do I think he's can't miss or close? Nope. Am I concerned about his attitude? A little yeah.

oh so it's about that senile pos phil? figures

Maybe. HOF is a promotional vehicle, but Dwight has been a mediocre 1-dimensional center for a number of years. It would be like putting Doc Gooden in the HOF.

It'd be silly but yes silly things happen.

Suffice to say that if KP turns out to be more or less at Dwight's level -- a few very good years and then falls off tremendously (despite being a different type of player, with better O) -- then he won't have the kind of career many of us here hope for.

I don't know what's so controversial about the idea that a player's personality indicates the type of player he'll be. Or that they're linked in some way.

It's fair to say -- You don't know what kind of person KP is from his posts. Fair. I am a little concerned, but I don't think I have enough info.

On the other hand, if the argument is -- you can be a clown and still be great, well then I disagree strongly. Kawhi, Tony Parker, Dirk ... their seriousness is related to how great they became. I don't even love Antet's game but he seems totally focused and determined.

I'm old-fashioned. Do your job. It's hard enough to do the job of being a great player. Getting distracted and worrying about your likes or your Twitter feed ... it's a bad sign, yeah that's what I think.

LeBron is a bit of a clown but really loves the game and has talent that is completely off the charts. Shaq too. These are guys who had unbelievable gifts, and both took their craft pretty seriously as well.

I don't think KP has that level of unusual talent. He'll have to work for it. And so a lot of the weirdness coming from him, that yes includes getting Phil pushed out, to me is a little worrisome. We'll see.

Become a great player first, then celebrate it some fine. But I'm looking for the makeup of a totally focused and determined player. I don't have enough info to say it's not there, but I have a different view of him than I did after his rookie year.

You can wave it away all you like but humility, focus, determination, they tend to run together. Let's see him get out there and back it all up. Then I'm good.

we can't have a serious conversation if you're comparing dwight howard to drew gooden. respect you as a poster but you're so completely off base.

lol I said Doc Gooden. Dwight Gooden. Started off like an all-time great, and then declined. Dwight G, baseball, and Dwight H, basketball. I'd say they are pretty comparable actually. Started off like they could be one of the very best ever and after 5 years or so, fell very precipitously.

KP has work to even get up to the level of early Dwight. This year and next should tell the tale. He's not going to be great if he isn't showing signs of that in the next 2.

Well that's obviously not what I'm referring to. But yeah, if KP can shoot it at the level of an unstoppable shooter, then probably nothing else matters much.

You got "Porzingis may end up with a bad attitude" from THAT video?!

So I guess Steph Curry must be a vile human being to you then? :-?

Even when KP posts pics or videos joking around he’s usually on the basketball court, gym or working out. Dude’s a gym rat for sure. It shouldn’t bother people one bit. Its just the way social media is nowadays.

No doubt he has that competitive fire, love for the game, and work ethic to keep getting better and better.

I get you can have a gut feeling about a player.

But don't try to justify it, when there is no substantial evidence of anything you are saying.

I'll just have to disagree with you that running a basketball camp is a sign of true goodness or toughness.

Actually goodness is not really what I'm even talking about. Agree to disagree.

I want to see signs of a tough and mature person who is determined to do his part on the court by becoming great. KP has to convince me he's one of the best young bigs in the game. His offseason workout videos don't tickle my toenail.

And yes, him throwing his weight around after a good but not great 2nd season -- that's a little inconsistent with the typical path of a great player. Again, Kawhi would not have done it, nor would Parker. Just two guys that come to mind who are sort of at KP's level of talent, but just have shown themselves to be great players over the years. Let's hope KP gets there too.

As for his videos, they're not conclusive proof of a clown. But they're not impressive either, just like a basketball camp isn't ... to me.

Well that makes me feel better actually, because I think you're pretty fair. He does seem to be in the gym a lot, one advantage of his Instagram posts lol. I hope he's got the competitive fire to be great. I could care less about winning the debate. Him helping the Knicks get great is all that matters.

Btw, for everyone to overreact.

Remember KP tried to hit that Croatian girl who rejected him a put it on social media? There were even articles about it in USA media. So he tried to hit her again..

I see a guy who is focused on some things that don't involve playing great and winning games. Now, to be fair, so is everybody. Like eating and going to the bathroom. But some of it seems a little out of the scope of what is ideal. Oh well.

I realize you guys will defend him and that's good. He's the team's best hope by far. Frank is not going to be as good anytime soon, though I have high hopes for Frank too.

A lot of you will be crapping on KP if he doesn't come strong this year. So it's more that my post is mistimed than totally wrong. The truth is I hope it becomes totally wrong.

You said Porzingis is heading down the path of a jerk (ala Dwight). Now you're going off into some tangent about "toughness & mentality"?!

Lose focus much? :-?

Anyway, Porzingis is NOW entering his THIRD year after averaging 18/7/2 in under 30 MPG. Let that sink in for a sec.

And Parker?? Jabari? Let his ACLs hold up and then we'll talk. FYI, Kawhi didn't become Kawhi until about year 4.

Porzingis also HAS NEVER BACKED DOWN from.a challenge (and QUITE a few NBA players have issued said challenge thinking he's just another"soft Euro"):

And ofcourse this gem:

getting rid of rose was a start. can't have a pg taking more shots and higher usage than kp6 and not end up alienating kp6. unless you think kp6 should just accept that without some sort of protest, however clumsily it came off. problem is jackson brought rose in to appease melo and melo's infamous closing window. so jackson basically was robbing peter to pay paul. no matter how much kp6 looks up to melo or likes him, that rose acquisition was toxic from the beginning. you're going to see a different kp6 this season.

I would also add https://www.basketball-reference.com/boxscores/201511150NYK.html this game..

KP finished with 10 points and 4 rebounds on 4/15 shooting, but its all about context. It was at the start of his rookie year, right when all Porzingis hype was just building.

He went right into AD, tried to outplay him, failed miserably, AD finished with 36pts 11rebs and 4 blocks..

Next game against Hornets. Sure, rookie needs to slow down. AD just showed him his place, right?

Finishes with career high 29 points and 11 rebounds.

Jerk not as in -- 'He isn't nice to children and doesn't like puppies.'

Jerk as in -- likes promoting himself and gets distracted, maybe not entirely focused on greatness.

Another and perhaps better way to explain it is as focused or not focused. If a guy is worried about his likes, forget about KP for a second and just imagine a guy who cares about this a little too much, then I would say that's troubling if you're someone trying to evaluate his odds of greatness.

You don't have to call that a jerk or not a jerk. But to me it's a form of jerky behavior.

Humans have only so much bandwidth. Greatness requires a lot of bandwidth. If you're not focused on it almost exclusively all year round, your odds go down. It's really not that hard to understand or defend.

LeBron probably didn't have to focus on it as much, nor Shaq. They're that gifted ... I also think they didn't really spread their "distracted wings" until AFTER they had accomplished a lot. They were already becoming great.

Now times have changed. Social media is a big thing. That's great I guess. But if I was advising players, I'd tell them to hire someone to do all their social media posts. Maybe KP has. We don't even know.

Him going back and forth with a girl is not something that INCREASES his odds of being great ... ... that's something we can probably all agree on.

Slightly OT but do you think Donald Trump has time to invest in his job as president AND also call people out and figure out who is against him or not and Tweet about them? No he doesn't. Just like Mike D'Antoni spent so much time giggling at his own jokes and fighting with refs -- you knew that dude was not focused on his job. Now maybe that's because the Knicks were not good and he had no idea how to fix them.

But yes, I subscribe to the idea, fully and unabashedly, that you can SEE signs of a person's focus by how they conduct themselves. It really isn't a crazy idea.

Are they all about getting better and winning or are they jerking away from that core mission into sidebars and nonsense? I'll admit that I don't really know what's going on with KP that much if you admit that the connection between quiet and focused determination and greatness is real. And after a while, it does tend to become obvious when a player does not have it in him to be great.

That's not always distraction, much of the time it's simple lack of ability. Charles Smith wasn't distracted in a way that we knew about. He just wasn't very good and never lived up to his hype. If Kawhi was not as serious about being great as he was, he wouldn't have gotten there. He has some definite gifts but he's not overflowing with talent. That's largely self-made greatness there.

I would say KP is also not talented enough to half ass it. He better be mentally right to become great.

And please don't tell me Charles Smith couldn't shoot like KP. That's not my point.

Yes I think great shooting can cover up a lot. And KP has shown signs that he could be great. I'm a believer in that. But the Phil exit stuff, some of the stuff we see ... I'd admit I can't condemn him for it, I've said that repeatedly, but to pretend it's definitely meaningless ... nope, that ain't true either.

The nerve of KP, having fun while representing his country BY CHOICE. The nerve of KP running youth camps and building a basketball court to do so.

...how DARE he!

Y'all nig*as reach for anything these days.

For anybody who's ever seen Curry with that disgusting dangling mouth guard, you just know it's true he's vile. As for KP, nah, representing his country is not enough. Anybody who wants to be really great should represent at least two.

But they're not impressive either, just like a basketball camp isn't ... to me.

Be great and win. That's what matters. Not your social media personality.

:-?

Dude, that's not what you said.

So yeah, keep saying stupid **** my man! :D

I'll take that :clown: 24/7, 365 days! Curry too!

He's done well against Lebron too (remember when he kept is in the game when Melo was out?).

He had a great game against the Rockets too.

It's nice that he wanted to represent his country. I haven't said anything bad about that. Obviously that's not the whole picture.

Like it or not, he's a 2nd year player (okay 3rd year, with the 3rd year far off) who seemed to defy the Knicks president and helped push him out. You can ignore that completely, no problem from me. To each his own. That raises my antenna.

Marbury and Larry Brown ... who cares who was right and who was wrong, that was a bad sign no? Yes it was.

And to anticipate the arguments against me ... yes I know KP could be greater than Marbury, I know Phil might've been senile and trying to get fired, no Phil should not have given that stupid interview to ESPN where he talked about trading the Unicorn, etc. I'm fair. I really am.

But I'm concerned too. We can pretend he's so great in his talent that he doesn't need to be a really good guy mentally -- that he doesn't need to be fully focused and committed -- but I can't pretend that. I don't see KP as that kind of talent. He's 7-3 and gifted. All NBA players are gifted. Kawhi has amazing gifts, but I think KP's odds of reaching Kawhi's level, or close, are about the same as Kawhi's were.

But one of the secrets of the success of guys like Kawhi is love of the game, a strong desire to be great, and excluding as many distractions as possible to reach the pinnacle. I'm entirely hoping that I'm overreacting in my concern, yep.
