Question on the roster. Do the Iowa Wolves retain the players from last seasons Iowa Energy? The Grizzlies were affiliated with the Iowa Energy last season, but they bought their own expansion team in Southaven, Miss for next season. So, I am unclear on who has first dibs on the returning players.

The DLeague operates a bit differently in that the player contracts are one-year deals with the league, not a specific team. However, when a player stays in the league from one season to the next, he stays with the team he played for. Since the Iowa Energy simply transferred ownership and Memphis is getting an expansion team, players on the roster that aren't on assignment from the NBA should stay a part of the franchise if I'm understanding it correctly.

That being said, if these players are still in the DLeague next year, they should still be on the Iowa roster:

Still intrigued by Perry Jones, but I just checked his D-League stats from last year. What happened with him? Did he have an injury or something? For a guy who put up 10 & 5 per year on a team with Westbrook and Durant taking the majority of shots, you'd think he'd be destroying the D-League. Instead he put up about 7 & 3 with a similar minutes/game.

I was already surprised about the whole North Star / Aurora Borealis in Minnesota... but Iowa? That's (roughtly) on the same latitude as Italy, or Turkey.

Under the previous CBA, if a player signed a D-League contract for their paltry salary (something like $27,000 plus room, board and travel on road games) ANY NBA TEAM could call a player up, if that team had an open roster spot, and you were basically playing for the rookie or veteran minimum. So, as long as a team had an open roster spot, they could call up ANY D-League player.

What a two-way contract does, with the new CBA, is allow a team to sign a player to the G-League and have exclusive rights to that player. Given the choice, why would a player sign a two way contract over a standard G League contract. Well, if a team has an open roster spot, such as the Wolves might very well have, if they call a player up from G League, every game that player is on an NBA bench he's getting NBA pay. Up to a maximum of like $267,000 between November 15 and April 1 (the G League season). Any games a player is on an NBA roster AFTER April 1, or before November 15, are bonus money not limited by the $267,000 cap. So the Wolves might be able to persuade a player or two to take a 2 way contract with them, and then the Wolves would have exclusive rights to the player, but the Wolves would probably have to guarantee the player that they'd be called up for like 27 games or so to make it worthwhile making it exclusive to the Wolves and not allowing the other 29 teams to call you up out of the G League. An overly simplistic explanation but something that the Wolves may be able to use to their advantage this season. Miami's Hassan Whiteside was a D-League callup and after one season in Miami wound up making $21 million per year.

I like it. One of the better 3 and d wing prospects out there when it comes to guys willing to take a 2 way deal. Given the lack of depth on the wings we might be best served using both slots on 3 and d wings.

The G League Draft is Oct. 21. It's a 6-round draft, but only the first 4 rounds are mandatory. I believe the first pick belongs to the Iowa Wolves, after ending last season with the worst record. In the G League, most teams usually draft best player available, regardless of position. One of the bigger potential names in the draft is Glen Davis. If he declares, at least one G League source believes he would be the top pick. BTW last year's top pick was Anthony Brown.

The 50-game regular season begins Nov. 4, as Iowa hosts the Lakeland Magic. The Wolves will play 24 home games at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines, 24 road games and 2 games at the NBA G League Showcase from Jan. 10-13 in Mississauga, Ontario. G League games will all be broadcast on Facebook Live.

Expansion this year forced divisional realignment. Iowa now plays in the four-team Midwest Division with the Oklahoma City Blue (Thunder), Memphis Hustle (Grizzlies) and Sioux Falls Skyforce (Heat). Last year, Iowa played in the six-team Southwest division with the Blue, Skyforce, Rio Grande Valley Vipers (Rockets), Austin Spurs (Spurs) and Texas Legends (Mavericks).

G League players sign their contracts with the league and not the individual teams. Teams retain player rights to players for at least two years.

G League rosters are made up of returning players, two-way contracts (like Brown), affiliate players (Georges-Hunt a possibility if he doesn't make NBA club), drafted players, NBA assignees (Patton a possibility), and players added through waivers or via a league player pool. Usually, team training camp rosters are announced a few days after the draft.
