2017 New York Rangers Discussion

Post#1 » by Dr. Detfink » Fri Oct 6, 2017 12:00 am

Whoa. There's a buzz in the city come October: Football, MLB playoffs, NHL hockey...and the NBA to come.

Rangers playing the Avs at the Garden. Down 0-2 but thanks to the new look Rangers Power play, they close the first period 2-2.

Thoughts on the new season?

My fiance's uncle got tickets to the game on Sunday against the Maple Leafs. Not only will it be my first hockey game, but it will be in a corporate suite :D

Tough loss. Rangers sh#t the bed, allowing 3rd goal and game winner. The 4th was an empty netter.

Rangers drafted 2 good kids but they won’t be ready for another season or two.

Missed the game. How'd Shattenkirk look?

McDonagh and Shattenkirk were -3 last night. Power play, which has been 40th in a 30 team league the last few seasons looked good.

The +/- might not look good but Shattenkirk was a force on the power play. He was instrumental in pushing the puck up the ice and inspired his teammates to dig deeper and tie the score 2-2.

The problem with the Rangers is the fact, they don't have a first line center. They traded him and drafted 2 kids who are at least 1-2 seasons away from contributing.

That leads me to believe they are not going all in to get a Cup with Lundqvist.

Not going to over analyze anything from the first game but a lose to the Avalanche is never a good start. This entire team has earned the trust of its fans to be patient.

Mika looked awesome yesterday, that second goal was an amazing shot.

They severely lack a second line C. I think they need one to put them over the top. AV is also a horrible head coach and I don't trust him at all to get the most out of his players. I'm somewhat optimistic about the season, though. With the exception of a second line C, we do have a lot of talent on the roster.

Essentially the Rangers are going to play out the contracts of Nash and Lundqvist. I give them credit: Buying out Girardi, encouraging Klein to retire...then rebuilding the defensive core with younger, faster more skilled guys looks complete.

Just saw this thread. Not expecting much of rangers this year. I think they might have missed their opportunity to win one with Henrik. Unfortunately I think the ship sailed.

I think so as well. The Leafs unloaded 8 goals. Now, former Redwing coach Babcock has a helluva ability to turn teams around and they have some great young talent...but the Rangers shouldn't be losing 5-8 contests.

Doesn't get any easier...Montreal is next.

Don't the Rangers start slow every year, just about?

I follow hockey fairly casually but it seems like Rangers are trying to rebuild on the fly while still remaining competitive. I'm not sure you can do both. Maybe it's different in hockey but I feel like to land a big impact guy you gotta suck and draft well. I know they have some nice young pieces like Vessey and Kreider they hope will take big steps up.

Geezus. Montreal is dirty. Tried to kick in a goal. Waived. Shoved Lindqvist down as Shane winded up. Waived.

Great first win of the season. Rangers were outplayed by the Habs in the first period. TWO waived off goals but the correct call. Still "Mount Real" put up 8 shots to Rangers 1. Then in the DYING moments of the first period, Brady Skjei's shot hit the defenseman's skate and trickled in for a 1-0 lead. Second period, Rangers locked down Montreal holding them scorless throughout the game. Mika Zibanejad got an insurance goal, he's been red hot!

I dont see how the Rangers are worse than last year. I expect them to be in the SCF picture come end of the season. AV is one of the best, still not sure why fans are calling for his head. We brought on Ruff, a decorated head coach, as an assistant. We significantly upgraded our Defense and Power play by getting Shattenkirk. To top it off, we got him at such a crazy discount and at 4 years.

Lacking a true star but as deep as any team in the league. The core is in that 22-29 range. Lots of good-great players who show improvement season-season. Lundqvist is going to be a concern based on his age but after that bad start he shut the Canadiens out with many elite saves in the game, hes still got it.

Looking forward to a good year. With the Knicks in tank mode, probably be mostly a hockey year for me.

LGR! Lets get this CUP. Lord knows the Rangers deserve it more than the Knicks.

That was one hell of a game to go to. I don't know hockey, and I'm not going to pretend like I do, but that Zibanejad kid looks like he is the truth. He was flying all over the ice and was getting at it. You don't need to know hockey to appreciate what he did.

Henrik made some really good saves too that amazes you when you see it in person.

The atmosphere at the Garden was great and you could tell there were way more die hard Ranger fans at the game then you would see at a typical Knicks game with all those corporate guys.

Oh and I caught a t shirt which was dope :D

Zibanejad was adjusting to a new team, new system then broke his leg last season...this year, he looks way more comfortable and the production speaks for itself.

The secret to this NYR club has been the fact, it's not about superstars like the Pens...it's 2-3 really good players, a hall of fame goalie, and then lunch pail guys.

How can they be worse?

Well Lundqvist looked horrific Game 1 and 2...then looked like his old self vs Montreal. He has to stay healthy all season long.
