Grizzlies To Retire Tony Allen's No. 9 Jersey

Post#1 » by RealGM Wiretap » Thu Oct 12, 2017 4:06 pm

The Memphis Grizzlies have announced they will retire the jersey of Tony Allen.

Allen signed with the New Orleans Pelicans this offseason. Allen was signed by the Grizzlies in 2010.

“Tony was a driving force behind the Grizzlies’ seven straight playoff appearances and he remains a beloved member of the Memphis community," said Robert Pera in a statement. "Tony played with a level of passion that is unrivaled. He helped establish a Grizzlies culture focused on toughness and effort, and he challenged every player that put on Beale Street Blue to match his fiery intensity. On behalf of the entire organization, I would like to thank him for his incredible contributions to the Grizzlies and the unique way that he inspired the city of Memphis. We are proud that the Grindfather’s #9 jersey will hang in the rafters of FedExForum alongside Zach’s one day.”

“Tony will forever be one of the Core Four responsible for the turnaround in the Memphis Grizzlies’ fortunes and our surge in popularity," said Chris Wallace. "There would never have been seven straight years of playoff appearances, the incredible electricity in FedExForum for home games, ‘Grit and Grind’ and ‘Believe Memphis’ without Tony Allen’s contributions to the team.  In the process Tony became more than just one of the toughest defenders in the league – he became a true cult hero who was intertwined with the soul of Memphis like few athletes ever have in any city. Tony and his family will be missed but his impact on the Grizzlies and Memphis will never be forgotten.”

Why not? It goes beyond the stats. Same as who Bruce Bowen is to the Spurs.

Who are we to try and quantify how much the contributions of any player to a team means to the organization. If the Grizzlies truly believe that Tony Allen's contributions are deserving of his number being lifted to the rafters who are we to say no? Besides, this might be his greatest honor as a player.. My only grip with the decision is that Allen is Still playing in the league..

I was a little surprised by this headline, but the more I think about it, well deserved. The Memphis Grizzlies don't exactly have a storied past. Nothing wrong with retiring his number. He contributed greatly to a number of playoff runs. He'll be back in Memphis in a year or two.

I mean he was on either 1st or 2nd all defensive team 6 times so I suppose relatively speaking, he was a impact player for a long enough period of time for a consistent playoff team. What about Shareef Abdur-Rahim?

I was surprised too, but this made me happy.

Rarely do we see players get much acclaim for the defensive half of basketball.

If you're ever in Memphis, do yourselves a favor and go to a Grizzlies game. Those fans are off the meter. It's a great atmosphere. They love the hell out of that team.

I'm surprised at this because he's not retired. But Jersey retirements are more about what the player meant to your franchise, not a statement on overall credentials. Good for him. Good for Memphis.

Well done.

Defense is half the game.

He was once one of the best defensive stoppers. Especially in 2011 t VS the Spurs they had won the series short handed without Gay. Beat the #1 seed Spurs. They also pushed OKC to 7 games the series after.

6 times all defensive team is a big accomplishment. Good for him.

What if Tony Allen wants to go back to Memphis to play a season or two before retiring? Is he not allowed to wear his old jersey number?

I think the fact that both Pera and Wallace referred to “seven straight playoff appearances” tells you all you need to know about their mindset. Which is why Allen is getting his number retired.

For a team in a micro market with an owner who will not dip temporarily into his own pockets to pay lux tax ever... it’s all about the participation trophy.

Similar role, but with significantly less achievement. Bowen helped the Spurs achieve 3 championships (and played for 1 more season, for whatever that is worth). Allen's Grizzlies only made it out of the 1st round 3 times, with one being a conference finals appearance. I like Allen so I don't want to hate on the guy, but this is a pretty underwhelming career to have retired by a team.
