Indiana - Oklahoma City - Portland

Post#1 » by NYG » Fri Oct 13, 2017 10:29 am

Pacers trade a top 55 protected second round pick for Kyle Singler, more favorable of T’Wolves/Lakers 2019 second round pick and 2018 Thunder second round pick

Why: Use their cap space to add 2 picks by taking on a bad yet small contract.

Thunder trade Kyle Singler, Jerami Grant and 2018 second round draft pick for Ed Davis

Why: They dump long term salary for an expiring which helps a bit with re-signing Melo and George. Also, Davis fills a need for the 2018-19 season in the meantime.

Trail Blazers trade Ed Davis and more favorable of T’Wolves/Lakers 2019 second round pick for Jerami Grant

Why: They get below the luxury tax and take a shot on Grant helping them with the worst case being that they just let him go in free agency if he doesn’t.

No thanks on the Pacers side for this. Singler for what is likely to be 2 late 2nds. No thanks.

Cut Portland out. Singler, Grant and 2nd for TPE and top 55 protected 2nd

I like it for Portland. I'd even be willing to modify this with Vonleh and either Connaughton or Layman going out instead of Davis.

I think the cost for dumping Singler has to be more given the Cavs trade. They gave up a real 2nd (plus a phantom 2nd) and $3 mil cash to dump $4 mil of expiring money. It seems way off if we'd then accept another 2nd but no cash for nearly $10 mil over 2 years. I suppose there's the argument that Singler may be of use, but I don't know who would buy that.

Yeah the Cavs trade really shows the cost of dumping salary.

I don't think that's fair to connect the two. The Cavs were in cap hell and had more than 15 gtd deals. The Cavs need to dump salary was a lot greater than any other teams. Thus it's easier to see them overpaying.
Rest in peace Mamba. There'll never be another Kobe.

And OKC doesn't need to dump salary? They're already over the tax line (by a lot) and the need gets even more pressing next year.

We're back to the bad old days when salary dumping comes at a premium. The Cavs deal just reflects that.

Based on the market I'd say OKC's 2018 first, lotto protected, turning into two legit seconds.
Comments to rationalize bad contracts -
1) It's less than the MLE
2) He can be traded later
3) It's only __% of the cap
4) The cap is going up
5) It's only __ years
6) He's a good mentor/locker room guy

Can't trade a 1st. And won't trade a first just to get some guy to play 10-15 minutes off the bench.

The Thunder are in a bit of cap hell themselves. They should have sent Singler to the Knicks in the Melo deal, but the Knicks were smart in not taking him. Singler is not a good player. He's got 2 years then a team option if it was 1 yr and a team option and I badly needed a sf then I might take him for a 2nd.

If the Thunder are to sign Paul George and Carmelo opts into his ETO they will be paying the repeater tax next season. They need to move Singler and any other dead weight they have and it will take a #1 to do it.

They did not invest a 1st rounder to get both George and Anthony. They will not trade their 2022nd (!!!) 1st just to get rid of Singler. Not gonna happen.

If they decide to move on Singler, they're trying to dump a 10/2 contract. That's nothing with today's cap.

No they didn't and they probably won't. But with all these teams over the Tax by big $$ the cost to dump salary is going up. Or you can pay the tax.

I agree with that for the really terrible contracts, but not for guys like Singler. We're talking about 10 million for two seasons. The Thunder would not be trying to dump Mozgov, Carroll or Crabbe.

If it takes a 1st to dump 10/2, what will it take to take on Faried, Teletovic, Henson, Leuer et al.? Multiple 1sts?
