i am impressed with everything about gordon, from his demeanor, to his understanding of the game, to his steady now rapid improvement. you can continue to be negative and you are going to miss quite a show.

He took a Center off the dribble... is anyone supposed to be impressed or surprised by that?

yes.

but it is more than that, he is reading defenses and making the right basketball play like a player beyond his years. it will be the blow bys, it will be the now lethal mid range game, and it will be facets we have not even seen yet...

I feel like he still gets a lot of great looks from three because the league has not yet adjusted to his improved shot, when they do, he will start blowing by defenders who aggressively close out on him leading to easy layups/dunks. The threat to make a jump shot is underestimated when talking about taking some off the dribble. If you can't make a jump shot you can stand out there putting on a dribbling exhibition all day if you want but your not getting past the defender who is sagging off you.

I've seen great shooters with below average handles get layups due to massive driving lanes because the threat of their jump shot Ala Klay Thompson

Even if he never really develops a great handle or driving ability. Being a super athlete 3 + D player will still get him the max easily. Those types of players are really valuable today.

Wasn’t Shawn Marion his draft comp? A better shooting, slightly worse defending Marion would be one of the best players in the league still. Maybe not THE best, but considering people didn’t even think he was worth a first round pick at times last year, that’s pretty good.

There's a difference between beating a Center off the dribble and making a Center look absolutely SILLY off the dribble. Gordon HAS handles to do this consistently and you can scoff at him all you want, but that is exactly the kind of match ups he's now facing. He doesn't have to beat PGs, SGs and SFs off the dribble routinely.

Watching Gordon breakout this year is a beautiful thing. I'm not sure why any Magic fan would be so sour about this. He's becoming an all around basketball player and not just a dunker. A star is being born.

What is not shown in this clip is that this was Gordon's effort of a broken play. That he could make a positive, individual outcome when the team did not get its offensive in sync is indeed a very good play.

Article is all done! Just gotta add some clips then I’ll post a thread. Hope y’all enjoy it, because it’s got some good stuff (I think). The leap he has taken goes past just plain box score stuff. :o

I feel like JF5 is hoping AG won't succeed. He's always been one of AG's biggest critics.

Last year a lot of people, like JF5, were saying "he shoots the 3 at 28% - he'll never be a scorer". Now he's leading the league in 3pt%, and the criticisms have shifted to "he's only beating a C off the dribble - he'll never be a scorer".

If he can take his jumpshot from where it was to where it is, why hang so much doubt on him evolving his handles in the next few seasons, too?

Gordon's development should serve as a testament to the role of work ethic in development. We often attribute greatness to hazy intrinsic vagaries. Talent obviously matters, but you are never a finished product. This is why it's important to acquire youngsters that have athleticism, length, and the character to maximize the development of their raw tools. From then on it's just a matter of patience.

The talk of stars and superstars is blatherskite to me. It means nothing to me because I'm not some corporate tool in a suit trying to figure out how to sell sneakers to kids at a ridiculous markup.

Arguing about stars and superstars is like arguing whether grandma's special chicken casserole is good or really good. I've always reserved either label for the few players in the league whose value on the court far exceeds the limitations on compensation permitted by the maximum contract stipulations in the CBA. Any other points of delineation are subjective contrivances.

So you believe I want a player to fail to be right? I'm not much of a sociopath to wish that on anyone trying to make it in the NBA, lol.

I said the same things about Giannis before last year and he proved me absolutely wrong. I can admit that he is currently a top 5 player and the best young player in the league. I debated this with many Bucks fans and they saw something that I clearly didn't anticipate or see when I saw him prior to superstardom.

I can admit when I'm wrong when it comes to my opinions and arguments (because they just are that). But unfortunately it's those who make it more than what it is and make it seem I have something personal against players.

Seriously, if AG becomes this big time player that leads this team to contendership, am I really going to care about this argument if that happens? The only problem I have with conversations like this is because of statements like this, posters holding vendettas against me for differing opinions, and the idea that other players are hindering the youths development (knowing full well the players themselves aren't ready to carry the load, especially on a team like this without a single all star caliber player).

Legitimate opinion but one that's too spicy for the GB at this time.

Awesome article. Will definitely recommend it to others. You should definitely get it on Orlando Magic Reddit and NBA Reddit.

Thank you, I'm glad you liked it! I actually posted it on the Magic Reddit, but can't post it on the NBA one because someone reported my last article on Frank as spam...wtf? (*The article got a few thousand hits, so that's cool.) If anyone wants to post it on the NBA Reddit page, by all means go right ahead!

*I didn't make this into its own thread here because I wasn't sure if that would be cool with the mods - forgot to ask beforehand. :-? *

Isn't it funny with the way the game has changed that Blake Griffin is becoming like Aaaron Gordon? lol

I thought he had an awful game last night. He's gotta stop doing this thing where he makes it personal vs whomever -- he got into it with KD and he took him out of the game completely.

Last time he played this bad a game was Chicago when he tried to show off vs Markannen (hyped rookie from the same school he came from). It didn't end well then either.

Good news is he's not doing it every game, but it is ugly when it rears its head.
