"encourage" and "push" arent the same thing. Encourage suggests a more passive, verbal, stimulatory role. Push suggests more forceful and active role.

Encouraging Ntilikina would be telling him outside of games, or during timeouts to shoot more and advising him in general.

Pushing Ntilikina would be something like telling Ntilikina what to do when ntilikina has the ball in his hands.

Encouraging gives more freedom to ntilikina to make the decision for himself, and thus learn and play through his mistakes with his own thought process. Pushing him to shoot is just making the decisions for him and somewhat taking the thought process out of ntilikina's hands. It wont really help Ntilikina that much for someone to direct him when to shoot, when to pass, etc.

I agree he shouldnt be pushed. In today's NBA the learning curve of the point guard is incredibly high. He needs to experience and figure out all the nuances by himself so that they come to him naturally. That includes shot selection.

His decision making on offense is still raw as hell but it's easy to forget that he's the youngest player in the league and has a background in a style of basketball that is focused on sharing the ball. His natural progression will occur. just cant expect it to happen overnight.
