I meant to respond to this earlier but it got lost in all of SD20s garbage spam. I don't see how the needle gets moved either way until one party gets a super majority. I see the politics as too divided for there to be any type of bipartisan compromise. Take tax reform for example: the only reason that Republicans have pushed for this unpopular tax bill is to appease their billionaire donors, they've said as much. If they truly wanted to give the middle class a tax cut, they could do as much. Could you ever see a minority Republican congress agreeing to raising taxes on the 1%? I think the onus is on the Democratic Party to actually live up to their Progressive values when they come into power and give voters a reason to continue keeping them in power.

I never thought I'd say this to another poster, but yes, SD20, it would be great if you'd scale back your presence on this thread. Your rambling, incoherent posts that amount to little more than conservative talking points and your repeated and mindless posting of news/twitter comments from the far right have made this thread nearly intolerable.

This used to be a mostly serious thread but you've managed to singlehandedly turn it into parody.

thats complete BS.

sour grapes. You have 7-8 hard line liberals, 4-5 are very active, that are doing nothing more than re-tweeting the opposing liberal talking points and a bunch of hard line liberals stroking each others ego along the way. The board needs balance. You guys dont like that my arguments, however disjointed and rambling are better. my story is better than yours. My guy won. and my storyline is better. It's real. it's grittier. It's got more teeth. In spite of going up against you guys 7-8 on 1 regularly, i'm winning. And you know it.

So now you want to shut me up. That's fake news at its best. If you want to win. tell a better story. and bring more reason to the argument and less emotion.

if you want a strictly liberal politics thread make a new thread. call it "liberal view points only talking points." I will stay out of that one and only post in this one. I promise.

I don't know why you guys keep responding to SD20. Let him be. We can have intelligent discussion here and let him shout at clouds. The more you engage him, the more he feels validated. It's not that hard.

You mean the wonderful policies that helped drive the housing bubble, the education loan boondoggle, the lack of sustainability of our entitlement programs.

Don't get me wrong - I have no hope for an R super majority doing the right thing - they have clearly shown they can't govern.

But I have about as much hope the Ds if they hold to their "progressive values" will do the same.

Your post reeks of tribalism - but I am not sure if you see it. I think the D elites get it about as well as the R elites. I think Brooks' article is pretty good on the matter.

OR we could just give him this thread and create another one.

Not a "LIberal ONLY thread". Just one that doesn't include him.

Other conservatives (Popper,Induveca etc) are more than welcome.

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

you mean intelligent and completely liberal biased discussion? I'm just kinda lost. How is that even a discussion? You guys were basically debating the politics of the furthest left, socialist leaning Obama administration and that of completely left, full on socialism of Bernie Sanders. That's the intelligent discussion? And you guys were demonizing everything GOP and Trump along the way. And calling everyone who supported the GOP and Trump a racist. meanwhile the only thing close to racism/elitism/classism/sexism/chauvinistic/and misogyny that ive seen of late is that of the hollywood left and democrats in actual office. it's all completely unchecked by the liberal posters. Also basically being completely intolerant of any conservative ideas and platform. reducing it to spam. The opposing point of view has become "spam." that's the intelligent discussion?

just open up a new thread, "liberal talking points only." I'll stay out of it. But if you stay here dont act like you're having an intelligent discussion. Its not intelligent. Nor is it an actual discussion about politics. Not even close. its a full fledged liberal witch hunt. 1 year after the election. 1 effing year!!!!!!!

Agreed - and those that don't know their history are bound to repeat it...

Until the Ds (as a party) can come to grips with sustainable government - they are just part of the problem.

there's too much on the line here. the country is on the line. We've been running unsustainable government since Nixon resigned. We finally have a president that has enough political capital that he is willing to stop kicking the can down the road. He will take on the tough legislation. he will take on entitlements. Take on social security. tax reform. take on north Korea. etc etc

and unemployment is at a 17 year low!!!!
5 trillion in new wealth created since trump took office.
growth is at 3%
like i said, its a full rebuild.

Trump is simply riding on Obama's coattails. #44 turned around a horrific economy left to him by the last Republican administration and it's been chugging along and growing ever since.

But if the Republican tax reformers get their way, we'll need to elect another progressive Democrat as President in order to turn around the economic mess that #45 and our current Congressional leadership are about to create.

What gives him political capital?

In general, when people use that phrase they're referring to a president having a mandate because of his popularity.

Obviously, Trump doesn't have that going for him....so what gives him political capital?

I mean yes, he's popular among his supporters but that's a pretty small percentage generally speaking.

Tax reform is basically a give away to the "wealthy elite" you constantly rail about.

I challenge you to look at the GOP proposals and tell me where it lines up with your wish for wealth redistribution.

Even the minor tax cuts the middle class will get are only temporary while (you guessed it) wealthy folks' tax cuts are PERMANENT.

Yeah....PERMANENT.

In fact, I've haven't seen ONE proposal that actually benefits the average Joe in the long run.

Pesonally. lost all credibility when they started harping on repealing the estate tax.

What in the heck does that have to with the middle class (or the poor)?

If some wealthy elitist was going to save billions of dollars while the average citizen got relative peanuts, how would you react?

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.

At the end of the day, people live in the cities. That's why Russia (which is #1 in landmass) is not the most powerful country in the world.

here's the thing though. and this is what the new tax reform is all about.

1. people dont just 'live in cities."
2. It started with a very very very small town. and local farming and "jobs" to eat. and minor carpentry. financing wasnt needed.
3. then came a single manufacturing plant, which required financing (even if self).
4. then people moved closer to those jobs.
5. which created a bigger demand for housing and infrastructure. local taverns, gold smiths, clothing stores, etc
6. which created more jobs
7. which compelled even more people move to the cities.
8. cities got bigger. tariffs were imposed by the federal government. "Income Tax" wasn't even a law until at its earliest and briefly in 1861 to pay for the war. then not reintroduced until 1913 (16th amendment) only 100 years ago!!!!!!!!
9. But At this point, its all about taxes.

In the modern era and in front of all of that is financing for the infrastructure. financing for the manufacturing. large corporations have been subsidized by cities like Oak Brook near me and now the mayor of Chicago is doing the same thing for businesses in Chicago Proper where major tax breaks are given to large corporations.T.I.F. zones etc. which amounts to Tax free financing with tons of other subsidies built into it to pay for the manufacturing infrastructure. Sports Arenas often paid for by cities on the back of the tax payer combined with sweetheart tax deals going forward. Cities "recoup" with sales taxes and "entertainment tax" on tickets.

It's corporate welfare and these democratic mayors of these large cities are all about it. All effing about it!!! nearly every sports team and their billionaire owners get their stadium bought and paid for by the public. disgusting!!!

back on Point:

1. the republican tax reform is attempting to take on this entire model. and good for them!!!
2. by removing state and local tax exemptions and interest exemptions as well as other subsidies where expensive and high tax cities are subsidized by the rest of the country. You know. That entire rest of the country that is entirely red on the map.

3. The rest of the country doesn't pay outrageous mortgages.
4. Nor own expensive property. so they have little to no real estate tax write off.
5. little to no "mortgage interest" write off as their homes cost $50K and less. They dont have outrageous student loan debt because they live in their small town and maybe went to an inexpensive junior college.

So why do city folk with their outrageous student loan debt (and high interest)? with their outrageous mortgage (interest)? and their outrageous property tax?

why do these city folk get these massive write offs!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and you guys think that's fair? A plumber or carpenter or police officer or teacher in small town america might have $5000.00 write off in interest from all of those sources. yet a City person in Chicago like me has upwards of 30,000 in write off from my property taxes and interest. Why is that fair!!!???

republicans are saying. If you cant afford the expensive city then move out of the city!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

and i'm a city dweller!!! I benefit largely from these write offs. But I believe in fairness. I already make more money because jobs in cities pay higher. that higher pay is suppose to offset the higher taxes and cost of living. and my real estate appreciates and substantially higher rates than small towns. so i make more money 2 ways. Why do I also get a bigger tax break on my high taxes and higher interest payments!!!???

that's what republicans are saying. and even though it costs me more money, i agree with them.

In theory, more people should move out of these cites. which are over crowded anyway. that's the plan. it's fair. I like it. even though I will personally lose some major tax advantages.

Even more interesting is that even though the corporate rates are dropping from 40% to 20% in the GOP house bill, corporations lose their ability to write off state and local real estate taxes as well. So what we are going to see is these corporations move their "jobs" from cities to small towns in less expensive states like Texas and Florida with no state income tax and vey low real estate taxes. To small towns.

Get ready for it! its coming!!!

Cities will go flat broke trying to subsidize to keep up. or worse, make the cost of living so outrageous that only the truly elite wealthy types will be able to afford their smug city attitudes.   I cant wait!!
like i said, its a full rebuild.

You clearly don't like the opinions voiced in this thread. I get it. I have similiar thoughts about another board I post on.

So you know what I decided to do? I simply stopped posting.

there's too much on the line here. the country is on the line.

1. political capital is from a base that hasn't budged. they aren't going anywhere. you know this.

2. You know how i feel about the estate tax. as well as all wealth about 20-50 million: tax it all 95% or higher. recapture it. redistribute it. None of you libs will back me up on that. Which is weird.

3. there is no such thing as permanent or temporary. everything can be removed or amended. thats a liberal scare tactic talking point. alcohol possession can be legal one day and illegal the next in this country. nothing is permanent. and im pretty sure you know this. so why would you spread a blatant lie like that?
like i said, its a full rebuild.

you mean intelligent and completely liberal biased discussion?

Your post reads straight from infowars, breitbart & GLP. It's not intelligent, it's ignorance. And for you it's bliss. There's no discussion, only paranoid rantings of a misguided fellow in a desperate search for online validation.

Everyone has already been down this road with SD20. We're all just wasting keystrokes at this point.

1.) As I said a relatively small percentage of the country.

2.)No. What's weird is that you support a party that in many ways champions policies that go against what you say you believe in.

3.)Well the GOP apparently think they can make them permanent because that's EXACTLY what they are saying.
So why would they spread a blatant lie like that?

President Donald Trump referred to African countries, Haiti and El Salvador as "shithole" nations during a meeting Thursday and asked why the U.S. can't have more immigrants from Norway.
