Those aren't the same points.

That may looks like two different points, but there is a correlation between them. Kinda cause and effect relation.

Please let me make myself clear with describing my thoughts in other way, I'm not aganist getting a high lotto pick. I would like that toy to have obviously, but not at cost of losing 50+ games in a year. We would lose too much for a very small chance of getting a better return. And in general, i look at tanking as a last result when you don't have your franchise guy but IMHO luckily we have one

at 2012, Sixers didn't have anyone since Iverson.
at 2013, Lakers didn't have someone after Kobe.
at 2014, Minny didn't have someone after Love.
at 2010, Cavs didn't have someone after the Decision.

so, instead of tanking, I would try to get that young talents with the assets i don't need(DJ-Lou) while i would respect my franchise guy and try to put him in a position to succeed just like other champions did in the past. I have already present the examples before.

In the second part, the phrase of "champions were not built through the draft" isn't belongs to mine. I was arguing about "And champions are pretty much always built through the draft. That means sometimes, you need to tank." phrase. Opposing MTV's idea shouldn't reflect directly what you said. It's a wrong inference.

As I mentioned, there is no champions tanked purposely for young talent when they already drafted their golden boy in the last 20 years.(Kobe-Duncan-Dirk-Pierce-Wade-LBJ-Curry)

GSW has built their main core via draft but they didn't tanked for it when they got Curry. It was just misfortuned injuries to Curry that keep them in the lottery till 2013. With a luck, they got Klay #11 and Draymond #35. not exactly tanking picks right?

QRich3 wrote:Yeah DieHardFan has a great point against the "Spurs tanked for Duncan" and "Mavs drafted Dirk" crew. If you wanna base the Spurs winning titles in 2014 because of tanking in 1997, or the Mavs winning in 2011 because of a 1998 draft pick, Lakers winning in 2010 because of their 1996 draft, etc. then surely the Clippers are alright cause they already tanked in 2009 right?
Point being, what you need is to have ATG players in their prime, and throughout NBA history, those have been acquired either through the draft, free agency or trade. Tanking is not a more viable or easy strategy than the other two avenues, it just seems easier but it really is not.

Anyway, depending on what comes back today on Blake's knee, I could see a viable tank for a top 10 pick this year. Which might indeed be the way to go if Blake goes down for a long time.

The Paul George thing is interesting, I think he might rather go to the Lakers cause it seems he's set into making use of their marketing machine, but if the Lakers look horrible again and we look competitive, he has to at least think about it right? and if Gallo doesn't look like he's done, the Thunder have to prefer getting him and other pieces in a S&T than just letting George go for nothing right? But for that, Gallo has to look good and the team has to be competitive. If we're just as bad as the Lakers, he's definitely gonna go get that sweet endorsement money they can get him better than us.

He made two points but argued them as one: We don't need to tank (oddly enough, see his last post  ) and that not all champions were not built through the draft (oddly enough, saying this current Warriors team wasnt built through the draft and then arguing extreme outliers.).

Those aren't the same points.

Dirk and Kobe both cut against the trade/FA theory. So do Pierce and Duncan. Dirk never was close to leaving and no matter how close Kobe, Pierce, or Duncan got, they never left their respective organizations. There's too many factors and it takes a lot to uproot an ATG player.

The argument (for me at least) is that punting the standard into the stratosphere and arguing from that isn't particularly fair or reasonable. If the standard is, "find Jordan or LeBron," then we certainly know that tanking isn't viable. ATG players skip drafts...multiple drafts. But if the question is simply, what is the best and most efficient way to infuse talent on your team year to year. I'd certainly say a lottery pick over paying for rain via trade/FA.

Is there truly a problem with getting a Jayson Tatum or Jaylen Brown (guys I'm presuming won't be Jordan or Bron) and adding them to your roster?

"that not all champions were not built through the draft"
I didn't misunderstand you at all. I basically summed up EXACTLY what you said. You left out the "not all" portion.

Don't you want to complement Blake with another max-ish player if you have cap space?

Don't know why you wouldn't court PG13 since he's around the same age as Blake.

Short answer, yes.

Long answer, I'm not interested in banking solely on PG signing here next summer:
- He can easily sign elsewhere and all the talk is Lakers.
- I view both him and Blake as co-stars (number twos) and, IMO, I do not see the mix as championship level.
- Why not win the draft and win PG? Is he too stupid to see that it would be a good situation just because our record and we'd be a lottery team? I'm sure he's smarter than that.

The age makes me hate it even worse. It being banking SOLELY on PG. I've already stated it but I will repeat. We would be signed up for ages 29-33 (option year for age 34?). This is a small window to compete, particularly for guys I view as co-stars. That's 4 years to get the job done. An injury one year. One year you're not good enough and poof, you're window is now very limited.

In a vacuum. Yes. Adding Paul George is a positive. A plus for this franchise.
Putting all of our chips in the sign PG basket? Nothnx. We have Jerry here and a new scouting department. We should be anxious to see what kind of talent they can draft, not scared of it.

They may both be number 2s but this is Blake's window so might as will find the best complement for him you could.

Besides PG, the other FAs would be Cousins, LeBron and KD. Those are the max players next summer.

Maybe PG is set on the Lakers if he's leaving OKC. But why wouldn't the Clippers try to meet with him at least?

The other players haven't been tied to the Clippers. Maybe Jerry West can make a convincing pitch.

Exactly. Ruin a whole year just to end up with Dante Exum? Screw that.

https://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/248169/Jazz-Will-Continue-Draft-And-Develop-Path

The Utah Jazz have no plans to bottom out and rebuild following the departure of Gordon Hayward.

Utah still has Rudy Gobert anchoring their team, which practically guarantees them of having a top defense.

"Our hope is our players grow into larger roles, and we continue a path which best serves the Jazz," Dennis Lindsey said. "And that path is to draft and develop."

The only time the Jazz have really tanked was in 13-14 following the departures of Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap. Utah selected Dante Exum in that year's draft.

Again. Why not do both? Why, in our current position, would you just pray for rain ONLY? My position is draft > FA. But why not do both?

Don’t worry. No more time for arguing theory. We’re going to get a good lesson in how to go up in the lottery AND pitch free agents.

Notice how Blake is injured AGAIN (another injury for this summer’s FA class to think about when contemplating signing here). We are going to have a sucky year and have a lottery pick........yet, we are still here talking about pitching FAs.

Now is the perfect time to tear it down. We have a good trade piece (DJ) that we either are going to overpay, not offer enough for him to stay, or trade. We have pieces in place to stay competitive (Beverley, Blake, Gallo, Milos), plus a revamped front office and master builder in Jerry West.

Add to that a few guys worth going into the tank for (Doncic, Ayton, Bagley, Porter, Bamba, Sexton). Its time.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.

After i got the news that Blake's injury will last 2 months, there is just no point of view to not to tank. After two months there will be recovery time too so, you can say 3 months. We will already be out of playoff race than and Blake's game can not improve while his in a suit. So might as well just tank hard so the wins would be meaningless when Blake come and we will stay in the bottom 5-6 rank.

Count me in.

I like George, but pinning all our hopes on signing him in free agency makes no sense for a variety of reasons:

- LeBron will also be available, and while signing him might be a pipe dream, you still have to try and he still has to be Plan A, ahead of PG.
- PG doesn't *have* to sign with us. If we put all our eggs in the PG basket and he goes elsewhere, then what do we do?
- Even if we get PG, he alone doesn't make us a contender. He's a B-level star: nice to have, but not a franchise changer. For all the criticism Blake gets for "not being clutch," he's actually made more game winners than PG.
- There are better free agents coming up in future offseasons: Kawhi and Giannis come to mind.

Plus, as others have said, we can maximize our draft capital this year AND pitch free agents next summer. We don't have to choose one.

I live in/near Gopher Country.

Murphy is very good college player and going to challenge my guy Ethan Happ for best player in the B1G... but he is a tweener. I’d get him for a late first or a 2nd and hope for Draymond-esque type results aka he can be effective as a shorter 4 (this DOES NOT mean I’d bank on him being Draymond’s level).

If the Clippers deliberately go for the tank, Doc might get a reprieve, with Blake's injury, the other injuries, if DJ is traded, etc.

Or just shut Blake down for the season after the two months are over with. Make a little announcment like he's still not quite there yet health wise and shut him down. There's really no need for him to come back this season

100% agree with everything Mike says. The offensive upside is unlimited, plus he is an absolute monster on the glass. The issues, as I said before, are defensively. He defends well away from the basket, and does a great job in Miller's ball screen coverage, but he hasnt shown much of anything protecting the rim. Typically, if he makes his weak side rotation, he wont contest shots at the rim. Instead, he will say on his feet, hands up, which doesnt exactly do much off the weak side. Late in the UNLV game last night, he definitely became more aggressive protecting the hoop, and he needs to do much more of that.
Plus, why would I want to go to the NBA? Duke players suck in the pros.
