OT: Miguel Cotto

Post#1 » by Blockwatcher » Sun Dec 3, 2017 3:06 am

Anybody watching the fight?
Cotto's last dance.

I can't say I have been a huge fan of his. He has had a very interesting career, often fighting the best of their time at the peak of their careers.
Also can't say I know much about Sadam Ali, just haven't put much effort into watching boxing in the last few years, only bringing my son to the gym to train.

What's the opinions on cotto?

Yea... very good. He never beat the "best". Even when he beat Margarito and Zab Judah and Shane Mosley and Ricardo Mayorga they were just past their primes.
He lost to Pacman & Floyd in their primes and to Alverez before he got to his prime.

He was very good, but Margarito stole the rest of his career AFAIK. Should have been sent to prison for what he did to Cotto

That was so crazy, especially how he got exposed by Shane Mosleys corner man and cotto was vindicated

I also had Ali winning 7-5. Made much more sense to find out Cotto injured his bicep in the 7th round. Cotto suddenly began retreating and wasnt pouncing after Ali like he usually was.

Respect to Cotto though on a great career. Never ducked, fought everyone in their primes basically. True fighter. Max Kellerman said it perfectly.

Cotto is definitely going to the hall of fame, yes he is a great fighter, he just was never the best fighter but he never disappointed in giving an action packed fight. He never backed down and fought thee best fighters in his generation and always wore his heart on his sleeve. The guy is a class act . Ever since that cheater Margarita beat him he was never the same fighter after although he did give Mayweather one of his toughest fights. He will be missed.

What happened

Had his hand-wraps soaked in plaster of Paris. Which would harden during the fight.

Well its not confirmed he did it, but its widely speculated that he did.

He got caught trying to use the plaster against Shane Mosely in his next fight. Magarito looked like a completely different fighter. Think he got KO'ed in that fight.

Im sure he did use it in that Cotto fight. Magarito seemed to get stronger and stronger during that fight, Cotto was really outboxing him but just couldnt take those hammers as the fight when on. Cotto got his revenge on him though.

so he fought cotto and was taking a beating and margarito came back and ko'd him
the he fought mosely, got caught with plaster after the fight and margarito got destroyed in that fight anyway.
then all the puerto ricans decide, hey if he had plaster against mosely (remember! margarito LOST!!!) then he mustve had it against cotto, that why cotto lost, it all makes sense now.

Yup thats exactly what happened, its common sense. Margarita was knocking everybody out up until that Mosley fight where they caught him cheating. God knows how long he's been doing that, probably his whole career. Look at Cotto's face, Margarita is not doing that with his bare hands and couldn't do squat the 2nd time he fought Cotto, he got whooped. And it wasnt just Ricans saying that, everybody was saying that even boxing experts.

so why didnt he beat mosley?
now he's been doing it his whole career ... ?
the plaster helped margarito in the beating he was taking from cotto the first 6 rounds right?

Mosley caught him BEFORE the fight and Margarito was never dominant again. Also notable that Lampley repeatedly mentioned that the sound of Margarito's punches in that fight stood out and that Cotto's post fight pictures were eerily similar to a man that died in the ring against an opponent who used the same method. It's all circumstantial, but let's not pretend it was just Cotto fans who felt Margarito cheated.

Cotto was a great boxer. Malignaggi said Cotto is the best all around fighter he ever fought, Mayweather called Cotto one of the toughest he ever fought and the dude's resume is rock solid. A lot of heads attribute his career stagnating to the Margarito fight which I do think played a role, but he also had a lot of turmoil with trainers mid-career and at one point was practically just training himself. When he finally got back to real camps, he started to look good again albeit fighting bigger guys which bit him against the likes of Canelo. Dude fought PBF, Pacman, Mosley, Quintana, Paulie, Corley, Zab Judah, Canelo, Martinez (Sergio) and that's just names that I think can show the diversity in competition...Trinidad had that mini-retirement gap and I feel Cotto made the legacy conversation interesting of his longevity (Prime Tito is the best Puerto Rican boxer I've witnessed in his prime but Cotto's consistency is undeniable). He's got a hall of fame career and I already miss looking forward to his big bouts in MSG especially lined up with the parade.

Yea, I actually was rooting for Margarito in the 1st fight.

It was just obvious he was using the plaster in that fight. Like you said, he never looked the same again. No one feared his power anymore, got dominated by Mosley, Pacquiao, and Cotto in the rematch.
