Bingo.

DJBooth wrote an article articulating that. http://djbooth.net/news/entry/2017-12-06-joyner-lucas-im-not-racist

Both verses were on point. I liked the song because it was a relevant, contemporary high concept song/ social commentary video that no one else seems to be doing right now.

Although I definitely saw and felt like there was a lot of similarities between this artist and hopsin.

Nothing about the 2nd verse was on point and I would spend a long time explaining why but this article (my friend sent it to me after I had a long ass rant about the song because once he read it he understood what I was saying) is basically my rant word for word.

https://verysmartbrothas.theroot.com/the-problem-s-with-joyner-lucas-im-not-racist-explain-1820888539

So what are your problems with it?

The most obvious part, after watching this three times now, is that the black guy’s rebuttal is weak as ****. The white guy spits all of the Breitbart and Bannon talking points, and the black guy cites ... Tupac?

It’s an empty coolness because the concept—the song and the video—is based on a faulty premise.

What’s that?

That white people’s race-related gripes and black people’s race-related gripes are equal—equally justified and deserving of equal time and attention. They are not. There is no conversation that needs to happen between the races in order to create some measure of truce and racial conciliation. The only conversation that can do that is white people talking to other white people to try to find a way to be less awful to black people.

Let me put it this way: How offensive and absurd would it be if, instead of a black person and a white person having this conversation, it was a Jewish person and a Nazi?

Um, that analogy doesn’t work. No one would dare do something like that.

Actually, the analogy works specifically because no one in their right mind would dare do something like that. We give the Holocaust the respect it deserves. We recognize the horror of what happened to Jewish people and the evil of the Nazis. (Well, we generally do these things.)

The message on-screen at the end of the video provides a perfect snapshot of the faultiness of this premise. It states, “We were all humans until race disconnected us, religion separated us, politics divided us, and wealth classified us.” It’s fulfilling and uplifting in the same bag-of-Cheetos way. But this video is dealing specifically with American race relations between black Americans and white Americans. And saying “until race disconnected us” removes the very active role white people had in creating race specifically to disconnect.

I mean there's nothing more that can be said about this song this article didn't hit on. Go check out the YouTube comments and people saying the white dude "won the argument". Joyner Lucas just tried to both sides racism in America on this song.

Shout out to that trash song Em just did about police violence too. At least his premise wasnt bad his execution just was.

Just gave the East tape a listen. I'm a little disappointed in it. I know it was just supposed to be a fun little Holiday mixtape but his flow is tired on this one. The songs he actually tried to change things up were pretty interesting actually, but the rest was very repetitive and usually I don't mind East just spittin but for whatever reason this tape didn't connect with me like his other joints did. Who knows? Maybe I was just in a bad mood today but I expect more from East honestly.

I hope his album (whenever it comes out) brings a little more variety to the table because I think East moreso than anybody else has the ability to put NY back on the mainstream map because of his versatility and ability to rap on non boom-bap beats while still sounding like he's from the city.

Plus Mysonne version is better and the lyrics from the black perspective were way more potent and official.

Some fat slob ranting over a blah beat with no flow, sign me up...not.

Here, everybody just wash the taste of that awful song out of their mouths... My 20 year old cousin played this for me as he drove me to the airport in Florida the other month. I have good taste in pop music and I was like "dude, this is lit, who is this..." and asked him to turn in all the way up. And we had just smoked a huge blunt and listening to this song as the outro for my florida trip was just perfect.

Of course the track has blown the **** up over the last few weeks but I heard it right when it came out thanks to my cousins good taste in music as well. I told him I liked 21 savage and he did the rest.

Cap and a stem catch a wave on us...

There's some three six mafia in that beat, with the little background sounds in the mix.

Good concept, but execution...idk, not as hype about it as a lot of people are. The two things I keep coming back to are what it sounds like if you're not watching the video and then is there a clear stance or message? Feels to me (call me a snob that's fine) like a lot of talking points without much actual insight. Just to back that up, I have some old HS acquaintances that three memes away from full-on alt-right who were sharing and liking this ish and I don't imagine them relating to or even really hearing the second verse.

yeah i agree good concept with a iffy execution. I just like the message trying to be sent out even if its not viewed 100 percent accurate.

I don’t even like the concept. It’s flawed. Really flawed. You have two perspectives:

The racist “red neck” telling blacks about themselves

and

The “thug” trying to explain themselves..
WTF?

Where’s the actual history lesson to show cause and effect? That second verse was shameful as a black listening to that nonsense.

I had to admit it, but I like Trippie Red. Been **** with him for a few months. His melodies are kinda ill. He should be seen more as a RNB artist thoe. He would do better in that lane. He markets himself as a rapper.

I didn't listen this when MP posted it, but did when I saw yours. Everything about this track is enjoyable. Gave me that happy nostalgic feeling, but was still fresh. Especially in the video when they're rocking the whip to that beat. Man, this is on repeat.

The Second verse should have been "You ARE a racist" imo. That's where I was expecting the song to go. Instead it was like a "for dummies" book about unresearched racial talking points being sold as a deeper discussion.

Exactly. It’s that “you just don’t understand us and our culture” crap.

Kool-aid and BBQ? WTF does that have to do with anything?

Dude wasn’t talking about Ovaltine and Ambrosia.

We know dude is a racist. That’s the entire premise.

Cold hard facts were supposed to be laid out. Problem? Whites won’t digest it comfortably. This is a buzz song at the end of the day. Can’t offend potential buyers....and that’s not Black people. Not this **** at least.
