I don't know what's happening in this thread but ... kg likes.

Where can I sign up for the macd/spud2 ticket?

#MakeHawkGreatAgain?

To re-rail a bit, MEM is sneakily one of the worst run franchises in the league. Right up there with PHX.

Hasn't it kind of always been though? I never understood the reverence for what they were doing. It was the same thing as the Hawks, just make the playoffs but for some reason they never got the criticism that the Hawks got. Maybe because they were in the west? I don't know.

I believe it has but, as you said, seems most revere at what they've done. Honestly, I think it's because they had an "identity" with the whole grindhouse thing. Something BSPN could latch on to basically. But, as you said, there's not much difference between them and the recent Hawks.

If I ever develop the stomach to wade through the bullcrap, I might post a thread on the GB asking why no one looks down on what they've done the way they poo-poo us.

Because Memphis has a FOTF and the Grit-n- Grind - it was something the media could write about.

I suppose Memphis has always been the poor cousin that made good. You know, that cousin that parents are always like "look at them, they didn't come from a good home but worked their way to managing an Arby's! Whereas look at you, had all this opportunity but you're still at that same accounting job going nowhere in life!"

It's always been a matter of perception, as long as the Grizzlies have that lunch pail blue collar mystique about them people will always fawn at their "work ethic" and congratulate them on their "success despite..." I think it goes with the small market thing when you're the only game in town. The Blazers spend like the Knicks but you'll never hear them brought up in the same sentence of financial incompetence either.

Exactly. Also, based on his last post, I think Macecase may be my cousin. Hey, I bet he can get you a discount on a sack full o' beef 'n chedders.

Speaking of sneakily poorly-run organizations ... is MIA on that list? I say ... Other than Lebron picking them, who of substance has Pat Riley (not Lebron) actually lured to MIA in the last 15 years? Who impactful has he drafted since DWhine?

Not since Shaq.
Wade got LBJ.
He didn't want to pay Wade a 1 maybe 2 year 'Thank you' contract, instead he's paying Waiters and the Johnson boys for 4 years.

Shaq was a trade though. I'm talking free agent signings as the myth is MIA is a hot-bed in that regard. I say the reality is Lebron/DWhine (as you point out) were the draws there although Riley has that reputation.

I'm sure there are a bunch of B-level guys who've signed there but the impactul signings weren't due to Riley.

Riley will always get a pass because he got rings. Him going from LA and New York to an expansion Heat team did as much to change the Heat's profile as cocaine did transforming Miami from being no different than any other ho'dunk spring break town like Pensacola or Corpus Christi.

I think you guys might be sleeping on Riley as GM.

When he got there, that team/franchise was kind of a joke. The irrelevant little brother of the Orlando Magic who'd hit the Shaq jackpot.

Riley acquired Timmy Hardaway, Sr. in trade, Zo Mourning in trade, D-Wade in the draft, Shaq in trade, Chris Bosh in Free Agency and LeBron in Free Agency. (That's three Hall of Famers in the last 15 years.)

Under his watch the Heat have won 12 division titles, 5 conference titles and 3 championships. Only the Lakers and Spurs can match those accomplishments during that span.

Miami has been the most successful Eastern Conference franchise since he took over the team.

In that same time span...the Hawks have 1 division title.

If you want to look for a poorly run team...look to Phillips arena. It's why we're on our 4th GM of the decade.

No, I get all that.

What I'm saying is his time has passed. I'm also saying, independent of the Lebron/Wade-led success, his recent tenure has been fairly mediocre.

KG!!!

That...is very fair to say.

I do wonder if he has any succession plans.

Some young executive in-house he'll eventually put in control of day-to-day operations.

Probably.

And yikes.

Return to Atlanta Hawks
