Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
If Ben Simmons does not win ROY so what! I'm not saying he is not motivated, but perhaps that would light an even bigger flame under him to improve and work on all his weakness. Not winning ROY of the year is not the worse thing that could happen to Ben Simmons.
You want it to be one way....but it's the other way. (Marlo)

I just think if Simmons improve his FTs then he can hit 15ft jumpers easily. Until then he will barely shoot.

Mitchell had a 12pt 4-18fg game last week, it's not like he's been averaging an efficient 20ppg every night. Rookies are inconsistent, Ben's still finding his game, don't forget the good games while you're watching the less impressive ones.BenRightHand wrote:Ben is still ROY but if Ben continues to scores 12 point bye or fewer and Mitchell plays at his current level he will win ROY.
(Also who gaf about rookie of the year? We need Ben to help us win now and keep growing year after year.)
I don’t care about ROY. I’m just stating over the past 10 days Mitchell has played better. That’s not a slight to Ben but Moran of how good Mitchell is playing.

Rookie of the year isn't about numbers, it's about whatever narrative the voters believe in. Mitchell will never win it because he's not as big of a name as Simmons. Same reason Saric didn't win it last year. Saric was on a bad Sixers team and was mainly on the bench until after the trade deadline. Brogdon was on a playoff team and had that whole Obama lookalike thing so everyone knew who he was. Simmons is a name and he will get the vote as long as he still plays somewhat respectably.

That's true but you're taking it too dar. Brogdon was better than Saric last year in pretty much any measure, so it's not like they gave an obviously inferior player with a good story the nod over a superior player with a bad story. Saric was pretty productive last year but had junk efficiency and very likely didn't help his team win games as much as Brogdon did. (Fwiw, Brogdon destroyed Saric in things like RPM and VORP).
Even if Saric was a little more efficient, I think it'd be more accurate to say that a good narrative will usually break a tie and sometimes vault a player up a half-tier or so. Most ROY winners play on bad teams and win the awards just because they have the best #s that year, and big scoring guys pretty much always win big over guys who play smaller roles well. (E.g. Wiggins in a landslide over Mirotic a few years ago).

Having better stats and having a better season are two completely different things though keep in mind.

Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
Simmons had 3 turnovers in 51 minutes yesterday as a rookie PG against an excellent defence to add to the other very good things he did. Yesterday's game should be a plus in voter's minds when it comes to voting for ROTY, 12 points or not.

Being guarded for most of it by Paul George, who leads the league in steals per game.
With him we had a 106 ORtg and 95 DRtg, he was awesome.

Brogdon does not look like Obama, and if he did, that would not sway voters. Brogdon outplayed Saric last year and deserved it. And it is hard to give ROY to a player who saw so few minutes (Embiid).

I'm not doing through the whole ROY thing again. Embiid was ROY, Saric was second. Every other opinion is wrong and misguided. The end.

Re: The Ben Simmons Megathread
Something else I noticed is he doesn't seem to control the game flow as much. I think back to that first Detroit game. We are up, Detroit is making a run and it is clear we need a bucket badly to shift the momentum.
Simmons knew it, he grabbed the board, put Avery on skates in transition and drove the lane for a bucket.
Watching it you could just see and feel that Ben knew what was needed and just imposed his will. I haven't seen that same level of confidence and dominance from him in a few games.
I don't know why that is, but it has been something I noticed. He's also had some killer turnovers when we were starting to make a run which just killed the momentum. Something else I didn't see him do a lot of early on.

At the very least, the fact that Embiid was the obvious rookie of the year at this point last year should make people realize that there is no such thing as an obvious rookie of the year this year.
If Simmons tears his acl tomorrow, then someone else will be the rookie of the year.
