Any interest in a couple of cheap, potentially valuable trade pieces?

NBA trade rumors: Lakers have offered Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson in trade talks

What may have come as more of a surprise, though, is how quickly and aggressively the Lakers have shopped a couple of those youngsters. The team would "love" to move Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson, and both players are aware they have been offered in trades, according to Tania Ganguli of the Los Angeles Times. This comes after ESPN's Adrian Wojnarowski previously reported the Lakers were looking to trade Clarkson after the season.

Randle has seen inconsistent playing time through 36 games. The 23-year-old forward has produced in big games (20 and 21 points in two close losses to the Warriors) and shown potential to grow after cutting weight last offseason, but it remains to be seen how he fits into the modern NBA and what his role would be on another team.

Clarkson would not have as much difficulty finding his place. He operates best as an instant scorer off the bench, and he is doing so with greater efficiency this season. Clarkson currently holds the highest true shooting percentage (53.4) and player efficiency rating (17.2) of his career. It also doesn't hurt that the Lakers have a noticeably worse net rating with him off the floor.

Trade that works for both teams:

Ilyasova
Bellinelli
Delaney

for

Julius Randle
Jordan Clarkson

It's basically a salary dump for LA that, hopefully, prevents Boston from ending up with the #2 pick and D Ayton in the draft. (BOS own Lakers pick if it falls between 2-5. It's currently slated to be in the top 5.)

But Randle and Clarkson have trade value after a semester or two in Hawks University.

And we already know...kg01 responds with an 'EZPass'. :(

Anyone else interested in trading old expiring pieces for younger pieces we can flip this time next year?

Clarkston is making $12+ mil/per for the next 2 years, 2 mediocre SGs at $30 mil (him and Baze). Randle is a RFA who will be looking for a payday, someone offers him a RFA deal Hawks aren't wiling to match ala THjr - lose, lose.
Giving LAL an easy salary dump with strictly expiring contracts - nope.
RFA Randle is not enough added incentive to take Clarkson salary dump.

Most fanbases won't offer no real value and that's okay, but someone might want Belli for a late 1st once Lou Williams is traded

Jordan Clarkson is having a career season.

He's an asset worth more than Belinelli or Ilyasova.

Randle has been beasting lately but who knows how long it lasts...Clarkson is a good player in his own right and a mini Westbrook some say..it's intriguing to me and I do think at some point we need players who aren't solely from the draft and FA signings. Having said that...EYYY YO KG...LEMME BORROW THAT EZ PASS THING YOU GOT! I AINT PAYING FOR FASTER LANES...

RFA in a contract year playing well....hmmmm. I see Clarkson as more Lou Williams than Westbrook.
So if another team overspends more on Randle than the Hawks are willing to spend we'd be stuck with Clarkson and his $12.5 and $13.2 mil.
Rather let our guys expire and use the capspace in the off-season to take a bad contract for a 1st ala Jamal Crawford. Capspace will be at a premium this offseason, we need to be players not tying up cap - remain cap flexible.

I'd rather the capspace of $12 mil to take a bad contract for a 1st in the off-season. That's worth more than Clarkson.

Heh...

so much for Hawks University being able to rehab the value of young wing players.

No, that's not what I said. I don't think we'll be big high dollar FA players this off-season and as Mace pointed out 2019 has a better FA class (though I havent checked). I
said use the capspace to take short term bad salary for shorter time frame to get a 1st.
Example: Would you rather Randle(RFA) and Clarkson OR Asik (last year has $3 mil guarantee), Ajinca, NOP 2018 1st (currently #15) and Diallo.

Bud U is well and good but bad value contracts are still bad value and tough to move particularly in this environment when capspace is at a PREMIUM, not just this off-season but the next year. Teams avoiding the luxury tax will be looking for capspace to dump contracts.

We can't always be taking dreck and trying to turn it into something. Can't we want more finished products for once? Is that so wrong?

I think we disagree on dreck.

I see Clarkson as a solid bench piece, in his prime, on a reasonable contract. Picking up a solid role player and a cheap former lottery talent seemed a no brainer.

I gotta be honest though, man. You kinda go the 'EZPASS' route on almost any idea.

NOTE: The poster above is actually advocating taking on dreck in exchange for 1st rounders.

Rather look to Detroit who is in salary cap hell this and next season before resigning Avery Bradley.
I'd prefer John Luer(he can be our new Ersan), or Boban, Stanley Johnson (better candidate for Bud U) and Detroit 2018 1st than Clarkson and Randle.

Rather the 1st to combine with other picks or players to move up in the draft.

The state of our team dictates that we shouldn't add a player like Clarkson. As you described, he's currently in his prime. He's a guy that would've helped our Horf/Sap teams, he's not a guy we can use right now.

Randall is a rFA who hasn't shown any inkling of an ability to be a winning player yet will be seeking a high-dollar contract. Why would we want that?

I'd take a year (maybe 2) of dreck all day long if it comes with a lightly-protected 1st. I'm not taking dreck that I'll have to re-up with in less than a year. Plus more dreck that's signed for 2 more years.

Now, I'll take a step back. If you think we can later flip Clarkson for better assets then you have a point. The problem is IIUC LAL has been trying to trade that guy for a long time already. Wouldn't that just be them dumping a problem on us?

I think we're getting closer to seeing eye-to-eye. And I do hear what you're saying.

I don't believe Clarkson or Randle are negative assets. Acquiring these guys on extremely short term deals does not have a negative impact on us in the short or long term.

We anticipate Dedmon leaving this summer in pursuit of a longer/higher contract. Collins will likely hopefully move into some type of starting role next season.

J Randle is essentially a low salaried backup Center at this point. And he'd be the single best backup Center this team has had in decades. He's avg 13 pts and 7 rpg in only 22 mpg. He's basically a more mobile Greg Monroe. You're not going to find a better backup Center next season for less money -- with no long term commitment.

There is literally no downside to paying a guy $5 million to be a backup for one year.

Clarkson...meh. He's having a career year. He's a better backup PG option than what we have. I have to think that 2 years of that kid is more valuable in trade than 3 months of Belinelli. Lakers have been better when he's on the court and he's been a consistent 14 ppg scorer.

These assets ain't great, but there is little downside to getting cheap guys on short contracts who also fill positions of need (backup PG and Center).

We're in asset acquisition phase of the rebuild. And these are pretty manageable assets that could be included in trade this summer for matching contracts or providing depth to a contender. I absolutely think we could move these guys pretty easily in trade.

I will not accept that we're seeing things eye to eye. :noway: Disagreeing is just too much fun.

The thing that makes them negative assets is the fact that they won't be accompanied by a 1st. Whatever value Randle has offensively and whatever level of mobility he has is negated by his total indifference defensively. That's the downside to paying a backup C $5Mil.

I don't want to give Clarkson the forum to just chuk up shots which is what a guy like that does no a losing team.

So, as always, ... and I wasn't gonna do it but you made me ... EZPass Lane

Fair points. And I will respectfully disagree.

Full Disclosure: I'm not really invested in either guy. Just seemed a low risk acquisition with potential for high return.

Unnecessary shot at the Head Coach: I guess Budenholzer just isn't capable of getting undisciplined chuckers to play team ball.

Randle's RFA cap hold is $12 million next season. So unless he doesn't get another offer from any other team and he is forced to pick up his qualifying offer (a la Noel) he's not going to cost $5 million.
