Why would Fizdale agree to that? He's currently getting paid out his Grizzlies contract and he's also being paid by ESPN. There's a 0% chance he'd do that.
He'd get money for it, assuming he can get it on top of the Grizzles money and it's not one of those where they pay the difference type situations and if he did well he'd have the leg up for the job next year with a top 5 player. He'd have the inside track to what will be the best available job in the offseason and a chance to get a relationship with Giannis that could get him the job.
...or he could wait until the offseason and compete for multiple jobs - including this one - with a guaranteed contracts that span several years.
There's a reason why no one ever does what you're suggesting.
He could still do that but without having the inside track on this job which will be the best one available. Really the only risk is he does crappy and then is not able to do that, but if a guy thinks that way he probably never would have gotten this far. IMO the coach would have nothing to lose. It's the team that avoids doing this, not the coach. They don't know how bringing a fresh person mid year would mesh so they just go the easy transition route with the assistants. And then potentially have to bring in yet another coach/system again a few months later. Sure, that could be in the coach's mind too but you'd think they'd be confident in themselves and would jump on the chance.
