2018 10 Most Tradable Contracts for RealGM

Post#1 » by Smitty731 » Wed Jan 24, 2018 3:33 pm

Hey Fellas!

For the third year, I wrote the 10 Most Tradable Contracts for RealGM:

https://basketball.realgm.com/analysis/248709/The-10-Most-Tradable-NBA-Contracts-Of-2018

Love to hear some thoughts, as this hits right in the T&T wheelhouse. :D

Thanks!

Smitty

PS: I changed some criteria and wasn't so strict about year's left. That was all for you HW!

Very good list!

If I was to put on my editor hat here, I would add that casual readers will want to see if their favorite players from their favorite teams made the list. If you establish (very legitimate) rules that exclude them, you won't make those casual readers happy by ignoring those rules because you want to include Embid. I'm not saying he doesn't deserve it, but if you open that door, LeBron et al make this list.

"Most Tradable" is clunky - maybe "Most Valuable" would be better? I read "Most tradable" as "most likely to be traded," and expected guys like Belinelli to be on this list, especially right before the Trade Deadline. On the Trade Board, I would put Giannis on the top of the list of most Untradable Players, because I don't think there is any offer a team could make that would get MIL to trade him.

Good article. I enjoyed reading it.

I had a good discussion about the merits of the Dragic contract on this board at the time. Not that I thought it was good in contrast to the negative takes, but meraly that it would play out as average.

With that said. That contract is not a top deal. Dragic was good last year but has struggled under the radar this season. Be it injuries, age or a combination I would not look at that deal as something desirable to trade for. Especially now when the best part of the deal is over with.

I'd nominate Josh Richardson as the most tradable contract on the Heat books.

Gary Harris is probably at the top of my (somewhat realistic) I-want-to-trade-for player list. Locked in for 4 and half years on a more than reasonable contract, already a pretty good two way player with good potential to keep improving, and seems like you could plug him into any sort of team you want to build and he'll work. Nuggets have a gem there.

Spencer Dinwiddie - 3 year, $2.9mil non-guaranteed contract. He'll make a non-guaranteed $1.65mil next year.

Good list. I also don't' understand LMA's inclusion on the list.

Only major omission is that Anthony Davis should be 1a, or 2 on this list.

Edit: I guess technically he did sign a maximum extension in 2015, but it's significantly lower than the Curry/Harden extensions available now and is basically on par with Giannis' deal.

I disagree that some of those good, but not great, players on long-terms deals will be viewed positively league wide.

Agree with whichever poster said LMA's contract is too much as well.

This, the contract also has some bird writes attached to it because of the length, although 4 years 44 million may not be enough if he keeps it up.

He'd be eligible to sign a 4 year, $44mil extension on December 8th, but yes that won't be enough. They do have his bird rights with no limitations during the 2019 off-season. The extra positive is that his cap hold would be tiny compared to what he'll actually get.

I'd put Danny Green over LMA on the list.

Steven Adams and Oladipo jump out as omitted

Thanks for all the feedback fellas!

We didn't do most valuable, because they you run into questions of value vs contract. The general idea is "If you picked up the phone and offered one of these guys, the other side would immediately say yes, without thinking about the contract"

Adams isn't on the list because he signed a max deal. Oladipo would have been in the "honorable mention" section if there was one.

I tried to keep minimum players off the list, just because that is a little easy. That said, Dinwiddie was probably a miss.

10 Least is coming and holy crap. I could have made that list 25 deep. Lots of really bad/questionable contracts out there.

E'Twaun Moore could've made the list - playing pretty good, his D suffers a bit since he is playing out of position as SF but he's been pretty good on off, and is due only 8 mil per for another two seasons.

On the other hand guy on this list are better or younger (room to improve), so guess that was the logic
